This article is about Tidy and Hardbeat Manifesto Xmas Disco; Tashes, Gashes n Flares @ Mission in Leeds (UK), Fri 12 Dec 2008
In need of warming your baubles this chilly December month? Well how does the Legendary Tidy Xmas Disco sound?
Tidy returns to Leeds with Hardbeat Manifesto on Friday 12th December with a line up packed with tidy artists and some of the best names in Hard Dance. So cultivate tashes, glitter those gashes, and put on those flares, for tidy and Hardbeat Manifesto are set to create a xmas disco inferno!
Troubled Scotsman Kieron stuck a few questions to the artists to find out who’s a Grinch, who’s most likely to exchange your gift or who’s happier with a bucket of port and settling down for the Queens speech? With too many HBM debuts to single out just one, we thought we would interview a few….

Hello , it’s been a while…well a week at least, how was your weekend and whats the latest gossip on the street?
Weekend was good thanks, I was playing for Dirty Stop Outs and Hedliners at The Zoo in Kilkenny, Ireland last weekend alongside Bootek and yourself from FunkedUpDjs. A lot of travelling in the car but well worth it. Latest gossip would be you don't like licking 9 volt batteries, well so I heard!
You have been as busy as ever this year clocking up god knows how many miles in the car and in the air, what has been your highlight of 2008?
The highlight for 2008 for me has probably been my last set at Tidy in The Royal Theatre, I don't think I've ever enjoyed a set as much over the last 8 years.
What has been your musical highlight this year?
The Musical highlight for 2008 with me has been getting the label up and running, I'm really enjoying that at the moment. So far I've had mainly hard releases but the future releases will be more techy driven which is what I play and enjoy a lot more.
What DJ’s have caught your eye this year? Who do you tip for success in 2009?
Without doubt Bootek, both in the studio and behind the 4 decks, it's an experience that takes you through the years with a modern edge techy twist! Mac & Taylor I also see going places in 2009, they have some excellent tracks lined up for release and a load of dates already booked in for Ireland.
People say there is a lot of doom and gloom about at the moment, but you seem to be busier than ever, what special tips do you have to beat the Crunch?
Ignore it and keep enjoying what you do.
So it’s a long awaited and much anticipated debut to Leeds for you, have you heard good things about Hardbeat Manifesto? What do you have instore for us? Will you be dressing up?
All the reports I've read and heard have been good, I'm really looking forward to playing at the venue. I won't be dressing up unfortunately but I have a few edits in store for this, some weird and some even more weird!
Now a little quiz, to find out if you prefer to give or to receive? Prefer logs on the fire, or just want to murder the carol singers? Just how much do you like Christmas?
Do you dress your dog as a reindeer?
Only if he asks... I need someone to help me with the sleigh!
Are you green?
Not that I know of!... What's it to you? Earth Matters!
Do you enjoy Christmas carols?
Hate Them! My favorite is Jingle Bells
Will you help decorate the Christmas tree?
Sure! No, do it yourself!
Are you going to or have you stolen Christmas?
Why would I do that? Maybe I have, that would be cool.
A group of carol singers knocks at your door and serenades you. Do you:
Pretend to enjoy their caterwauling, listen to their repertoire and give them all your change Shove a pound coin at them immediately to shut them up so you can go back to EastEnders Tell them that you don't approve of begging and shut the door
Who do you usually give Christmas cards to? Family, friends and work colleagues As few people as possible Everyone I know
Shopping for presents is:
One of the best things about Christmas - I love looking for just the right thing for somebody The seventh level of hell - time consuming and expensive, I do as little of it as possible Stressful with all the crowds, but buying presents is fun really
If you were spending Christmas away from home would you bother to put up decorations?
Absolutely - I wouldn't dream of missing out on all the fun Don't be ridiculous - I never indulge in all that nonsense Not if I was away for the whole Christmas period, but otherwise I'd stick up a few bits of tinsel
Your best friend gives you a truly hideous item of clothing for Christmas. Do you:
Ask them if they kept the receipt so you can change it for something you like Tell them it's lovely and wear it the next time you see them regardless of how awful it looks Pretend to like it and hope that they never expects to see you in it

Hello , it’s been a while, how was your weekend and whats the latest gossip on the street?
We had a busy busy weekend this weekend, not playing anywhere but we are both snowed under working on new projects trying to get them ready for 2009, I am currently putting the finishing touches to a new Management Agency, Electronic Artist Management, which will look after some exciting artists, I am hoping to launch this in the next couple of weeks, I also am about to launch a clothing website, Clubbers Clothing, which will be a one stop shop for all brands and artists merch, so it’s exciting times!
We are both working on individual projects too, Shaun is putting together a couple of new tracks in the studio under ‘Shaun M’, and I am doing a bit of Electro under ‘Elektrik Mayhem’, I will have my first releases out in the first half of ’09.
It’s not the end of funkedupdjs by any means, you’ll still be able to catch us monthly at Hardbeat Manifesto and other fantastic nights throughout 2009.
Kieron: The highlight for 2008 for me has probably been playing Pacha, London back in April, or my trip to Finland in May, where I popped in on Santa in Roveniemi, the fucker didn’t even know who I was, am I on the naughty list?
Shaun: Playing Storm is always fun for us, we played there three times this year, although Kieron can’t remember one of them!
Shaun: My remix of Tainted Love with Abandon that made it onto tidy’s Inspiration for a Harder Generation Album.
Kieron: Shameless Plug here, my remix of Brother Browns remix of Under The Water, due to be released early in 09 ;)
Kieron: In Hard Dance, both Morgan and Rodi Style continue to do very well, and I expect big things from them both, I am also watching some of the young ladies that are emerging at the moment, Caz Wood, Nathalie and Helen G are all making waves at the moment. I want Scott Fo-Shaw to rest his willy on my chin, so I’d best give him a mention too.
Fingers in Pies
So it’s a long awaited and much anticipated debut to Leeds for you, have you heard good things about Hardbeat Manifesto? What do you have instore for us? Will you be dressing up? Kieron – I am growing my tash and have a mountain of sparkles here to glitter some gashes, any offers?
Not that I know of! Whats it to you? Earth Matters!
Will you help decorate the Christmas tree? Sure Not do it yourself!
Why would I do that? Maybe I have, that would be cool
Pretend to enjoy their caterwauling, listen to their repertoire and give them all your change Shove a pound coin at them immediately to shut them up so you can go back to EastEnders Tell them that you don't approve of begging and shut the door, then go back to Eastenders
Who do you usually give Christmas cards to?
Family, friends and work colleagues As few people as possible Everyone I know

Very good thanks, I don’t watch soaps, but I’ll ask my mum when she next tunes in!
My highlight for this year has got to be the Tidy Weekender in October, it recaptured the magic of the early weekenders, and much fun was had.
Too many to mention to be honest, I think there is a really good mixture of tunes available these days.
Rodi Style has got a few tricks up his sleeve! I rekcon he will go from strength to strength and have an amazing 2009!
Be versatile, and try to get your finger in as many pies as possible, but don’t sell your soul to the devil, there are plenty of opportunities out there!
So it’s a long awaited and much anticipated return to Leeds for you, have you heard good things about Hardbeat Manifesto? What do you have instore for us? Will you be dressing up?
I’ve only heard good things about Hardbeat Manifesto, I’ll be banging out a mixture of classics and up front material, aswell as a couple of cheeky little numbers! I doubt I’ll be dressing up, maybe I’ll stretch myself to wear a silly hat.
Not that I know of... What's it to you? Earth Matters!
Hate them! My favorite is Jingle Bells
Check out my ‘Guyver meets’ EP coming out in December on the next Tidy Music Library CD!
Last weekend was a weekend of rest for us before the full onslaught of a very busy December. We have been busy with the events side of things the second half of this year so that’s been taking up a lot of our spare time. Also things have moved on the format we release music on our label Deprivation Recordings. Our first cd album is due out mid January, one disc mixed by us and the other with 8 brand new tracks on there un-mixed and dj friendly. Putting this together has been a long process but we are happy with the content of the cd we cant wait to get it released now.
There have been many great gigs over the year, both the Weekenders, Hard House Academy, Creamfields & Tidy Norway all stand out but for us our first event @ thr Custard Factory in August With Xstatic was amazing. After months of planing it was great to see it all come together & go so well. We look forward to many more events there...
It's been a great year for Hard House on the tune front. Countless quality tracks have come out, new labels have appeared and people are getting into new ways of releasing music to the masses which can only be a good thing for the scene in general. If we had to name a tune of the year so to speak then i would say "Echelon" by Curve Pusher is right up there at the top
All the big guns have been superb this year, Farley, Ian M, Glazby & Karim have all been on fire with both productions and dj sets. Production wise Paul Maddox & Dom Sweeten have been right out there at the front of things. There has been a good infulx of new dj's breaking thru too, like likes of Jimmy Dean & Adam M look set to do big things in 2009
Hunt for a deal, seek out the best bargain and haggle lol
We hear the last two events have been very well attended & can't wait to get up to Leeds as it's been a good couple of months since we been up. Set wise we have stacks of new material that's due on Deprivation so we will be mixing that up with maybe a few festive classics's also
Deprivation Hard House Music double cd out Jan 19th 2009, closely followed by Our Valentines day event with Andy Farley playing for 8hrs
My weekend was great thanks very busy and messy with Nuklearpuppy Friday and Parlez-Vous sat , bring your own booze at a nightclub is just asking for trouble haha! Lots of things going on at the moment getting plans for a very busy 2009!
There has been lots of great gigs this year so its hard to pick one of them out, Kiddstock was great as was Q-Base and a rave in a cinema complex in Phoenix , Arizona called Lingerave! Also the launch of my Bootek 4 deck showcase has kept me busy this year with a debut at Dance Valley which was simply awesome as well as my 1st trip out to Japan.
Louk a young producer from the south west has really stood out for me this year with his unique teched up European sounding hard trance with lots of power I think he will get bigger next year as more people discover his production talents!
You know I always dress up nice for you Kieron! I really can’t wait for this each event at HBM seems to get better as they go on, as its xmas I’l be digging out a few hard trance classics, love playing b2b with Alf so expect a lot fo the collabs we have done over the years , lots of hands in the air hard trance!
(Phil obviously can’t follow multiple choice, but here is he answers anyway)
No I dressed her up as in a santa costume though last year!
I think I have the biggest carbon footprint out of everyone I know so I would have to say no
Not really
I havnt this year my girlfriend has beaten me to it! Ive never met anyone who loves xmas so much!
No I heard Madders did!
Pay them to sing to my girlfriend as she would love it!
Got to say I don’t think Ive done cards for the last few years now its all about ecards save tree’s!
Shopping for presents is
Best done on the internet to save time
Probably not I’d hope I would be on a beach somewhere where there is no chance of snow!
Give it to my mate Kieron he needs some new threads!
My new album mixed alongside Dark by Design called Hard Dance Heaven and Hell is out in shops now and can be bought for only £10 inc P & P at www.tranzlation.dj
Hello, it’s been a while, how was your weekend and whats the latest gossip on the street?
Now that would be telling, I have heard a rumour that a Scots man got caught with his man bit in a haggis. When asked what he was doing he said he was checking to see if it was cooked properly!
We’ve done plenty of miles this year been everywhere from the Shetland isles to Ireland to Bournemouth onto Ibiza! A couple of gigs that stick out for us were tidy Ibiza, hard house academy and creamfields. But to be honest there’s too many gigs that have been special this year. Is been a fantastic 12 months!
What DJ’s have caught your eye this year? Who do you tip for success in 2009? There’s a couple of that I think are going to do well this year Adam M and Scot Fo Shaw. So it’s a long awaited and much anticipated return to Leeds for you, have you heard good things about Hardbeat Manifesto? What do you have instore for us? Will you be dressing up?
I think deano might be sporting a handle bar tash, flairs and an afro!
Nether, but my girlfriend has got my dog a santa costume.
Not that I know of...
My favourite is Jingle Bells
Sure! I love Christmas. My house is like santa’s grotto
Maybe I have, maybe I haven’t. You can’t prove a thing.
Shove a pound coin at them immediately to shut them up so you can go back to EastEnders
As few people as possible
One of the best things about Christmas - I love looking for just the right thing for somebody If you were spending Christmas away from home would you bother to put up decorations?
Absolutely - I wouldn't dream of missing out on all the fun
Ask them if they kept the receipt so you can change it for something you like
Event Details....next year is all about tidys home coming at magna 7/03/08 all details at www.tidy.com
My weekend was brilliant thanks! I had no gigs so it was nice to stay in and do absolutely nothing. It was also my little brother’s eighteenth which was a hedonistic bash of filthy drum and bass and beer sessions! Good start to your adult life! My gossip on the street? Did you hear about Gordon Ramsey...?
Playing Global Gathering was a great gig. I’d also have to mention main room at Hard House Academy because it had been so long since I’d last played Brixton Academy. Internationally, I’ve seen some great gigs across some great countries such as Australia, South Africa, and Canada. The personal highlight for me though has to be finally finishing my album ... it took nine months but I can safely say that I think it’s been all worth it!
This year I took a new producer by the name of ‘Sambo’ onto Technikal Recordings. I spotted his potential a year or so ago when he played me his demo of ‘Mezmerize’. I’m definitely tipping him for big things in the new year. Also credit has to go to Iridium who has consistently smashed it this year, and I can imagine will do very much of the same in 2009.
Don’t read the papers or watch the news! Seriously, I realised the other day that if I hadn’t of been told about this credit crunch malarkey, I doubt I would have even noticed. OK, so some industries have taken an absolute battering, and that’s hugely unfortunate to those involved, but the less I hear about it, the less I think about it!
There won’t be much point in dressing up as I know that Phil York will out-do me anyway, I hear he’s got a lovely Christmas number lined up. So it’s just the usual from me! HBM has a great buzz about it already, and being ran by the two nutcases it is ran by ... I can’t see it failing! Expect to hear lots of new music from my new album ... and I’m sure me and Phil will have our usual back 2 back agreement – I won’t play any psy-trance if he doesn’t play any hard-style!
I don’t have a dog but if I did, I wouldn’t...
With envy? Not recently. Environmentally friendly? Not with the miles I’ve clocked up this year!
Not usually, but then again I’ve NEVER had Christmas carol singers at my door. Mind you, most of the parents round our way would never send their kids to my door.
We already did ours last week. We got a budget ten pound jobby from Woolworths, realised it was a pile of crap, and have been attempting to mask that fact by putting a store loads worth of Christmas sweets all over it. So yes!
Never! Christmas is great.
A group of carol singers knocks at your door and serenades you. Do you: Fit? Female? Over 16? All three boxes ticked, but my missus still wouldn’t let me invite them in!
Who do you usually give Christmas cards to? We’ve sent them out to close friends and family this year, so not too many people but we still make an effort.
A downright pain in the arse and almost always left to Christmas Eve.
It depends on the context ... if I was by myself I wouldn’t.
Your best friend gives you a truly hideous item of clothing for Christmas. Do you: Debut it’s first wearing on New Years Eve!
My new collaboration album Technikal presents “Klubbed Together”. Fifteen new tracks, out on Tidy (UK) / Masif (International) in March 2009.
I was in Glasgow last weekend at Rectify which was a rockin night, latest bit of gossip I heard was that I’m playing Canada NYE, its not true, I’ll be in Birmingham.
This year has had some great moments for me, there were some great gig’s in the uk, but Ibiza was great this year, I lost my phone within 20 minutes so I was lost without it but had wicked time & it was rammed too. Los Angeles also was amazing, I hadn’t played there for few years so it was brilliant to go back. Then there was Q base in Germany, all I can say is crazy! What a crazy event!
Would have to be the release of my artist album ‘Bass Junkie’, it took ages to put together but the response was massive & I was really taken back by the support it got – without doubt a big landmark for me.
Vandal is a great DJ & producer that defiantly deserves to break through, the other hot tip I can offer is Will Atkinson, keep your eyes open for these guys.
I have tried not to think about it too much to be honest & focus on my work in the studio, running the labels & the DJ’ing. The only advise I can give is to keep focused and keep busy with work.
I need someone to help me with the sleigh!
What's it to you?
My favorite is Jingle Bells
Sure!
Maybe I have, that would be cool.
Pretend to enjoy their caterwauling, listen to their repertoire and give them all your change
Family, friends and work colleagues
Stressful with all the crowds, but buying presents is fun really
Not if I was away for the whole Christmas period, but otherwise I'd stick up a few bits of tinsel
Pretend to like it and hope that they never expects to see you in it
Ok, new tracks out now on Traffic, Existence, (original & Yoji remix). My remix of the Pod is also out now.
Many thanks for your time guys, see you on Friday.....
