This article is about Hardbeat Manifesto Presents Heroes @ Mission in Leeds (UK), Fri 14 Nov 2008
Following on from a fantastic launch party in October, Hardbeat Manifesto presents...Heroes on Friday 14th November at Club Mission, Leeds. A line up jam packed with Legends of Hard Dance both current and in the making, this second event is set to consign the first to the history books!
Frantic’s favourite leading lady and legend in the making, Cally Gage is set to make the first of many visits to Hardbeat Manifesto in November. HBM’s misunderstood Scotsman, Kieron, catches up with her ahead of the gig.
Och aye da noo Cally, ye bonny wee lassie, how ye doin an wit hae ye bin up tae? Ooops, sorry, I’ll switch the translator on! How are you getting on and what have you been up to since our paths crossed last?
I’m getting on just fantastically thank you, how the devil are you?
I think the last time I saw you it was in the smoking area at Resistance in Lincoln and you were sporting quite an impressive beard!! Since then it has all been a bit crazy to be honest – I have played gigs in Taiwan, Q-Base in Germany, Slammin Vinyl’s Sanctuary Festival, Frantic’s 11th birthday, Pam’s House, plus a few others!
It is well known that you first burst onto the scene a few years back at the Tidy Summer Camp DJ competition, and was quickly snapped up by UDJ Agency, since that time did you ever imagine it would lead to this?
Not at all, although I didn’t really look that far ahead back then.
At that time, all I thought about was practising as much as I could and hoping that if I worked hard enough, I’d get the opportunity to play in a club one day.
If you told me back then that I’d now be signed to the massive STRIKE agency alongside the likes of Lashes, BK and Savage, as well as playing all over the world and being a Frantic resident, I would have probably laughed at you!
Who was the person that inspired you to pick up the headphones in the first instance? Do you still consider them to be a hero? What other role models do you feel have helped you achieve your ambitions?
When I used to go clubbing, the DJ’s I used to follow around like a bad smell were Paul Glazby, Andy Farley and Tara Reynolds – I used to love stomping on the dancefloor to their sets and watching them mix vinyl, it all looked so exciting.
A lot of my friends at the time had decks and they always used to mix at parties, so I decided to give it a go one day and that was it really, I was hooked. I managed to buy myself some decks and shut myself away, practising all the time. I also used to bother the DJ’s every weekend asking them the names of tracks they were playing, so I could then go home and buy them myself.
Unfortunately Tara has packed up her headphones and moved back to Oz, but whenever I get the chance, you’ll still see me stomping on the dancefloor to a Glazby or Farley set – I still consider them to be amazing DJ’s and fantastic at what they do.
I don’t think I have any role models as such, I just concentrate on what I’m doing and where I want to go then work my arse off to get there. Once I’ve achieved that, then it’s on to the next thing I want to do!
Most of us wish to have super powers similar to those we see on the TV, given our subtle nod to a certain popular TV series, what special power would you like to have? And how would you abuse your new found talent?
I think my special power would be the ability to teleport, how cool would that be?!! I could just be anywhere in a second – no more long car journeys, no more long ridiculous flights. If I ever forgot something, I could just teleport home and get it!
I would probably abuse my new found talent by being able to teleport into shops when they’re closed to do a bit of late night shopping, or maybe teleport to the front of a queue so I didn’t have to stand around waiting for ages. But the best thing is that I could play up to 8 gigs a night as it would take me anytime to get between then all!
I love it, I actually want that power now!
Living in Peterborough, and it being so close to Norfolk, we’re pretty certain you’ve seen some weird shit! What’s the strangest thing you have ever seen?
I do live quite close to Norfolk, but I tend to stay away from the area of the country if I can – I’ve heard some weird rumours!
I’m not sure what the strangest thing I have ever seen is though, I really can’t think of anything – I’m sure there is something, but I’ll have to get back to you on that one, sorry!
Super Hero’s normally have alter egos. Many of the DJ’s are playing second alternative sets for us on the night. As it is widely recognised you are one of the happiest faces on the scene, just how bad is the ‘morning’ Cally?
Awww why thank you, that’s really nice of you – I always try to stay happy and positive, there is a good side to everything you know!
Although, you probably wouldn’t recognise me first thing in the morning, especially during the week when I have to get up stupidly early for work – it’s horrible and extremely cold at the moment. It doesn’t tend to last very long though, seeing my little puppy and having the first cup of tea instantly cheers me up.
People say there is a lot of doom and gloom about at the moment, but you seem to be busier than ever, what special money saving tips do you have to beat the Crunch?
This month (October) has been my busiest month ever, it’s been crazy – I think I’ve had a total of 12 gigs, with 4 of them being in 1 weekend!
I don’t think I’d be the best person to give any money saving tips to be honest, I am probably the worst saver ever! I always think that money is there to be spent at the end of the day – otherwise you end up saving for that rainy day that never happens!! As long as you’re comfortable, happy and surrounded by the people you love - what more could you ask for?!
Crunchies are slightly different, they are tasty but no Wispa, what favourite sweet would you like to see make a return to the UK corner sweet shop shelves?
I LOVE sweets, especially pick ‘n’ mix – I am still a big fan!!
Ones that I remember were the everlasting gobstoppers, you know the ones that latest for weeks and you had to keep putting them back in the fridge. Then there were Nerds and Dweebs, I also used to like those crisps – the Chicken ‘n’ Chips & Fish ‘n’ Chips? I know they weren’t sweets, but I think they should still come back.
So it’s a long awaited and much anticipated return to Leeds for you, have you heard good things about Hardbeat Manifesto? What do you have instore for us? Will you be dressing up? Phil has mentioned that he has She-Ra and Wonder Woman outfits, only worn once whilst commando apparently, would you like to borrow one?
I certainly have heard good things about Hardbeat Manifesto and heard that the launch party was amazing, I’m chuffed to bits to come up and play for you guys.
I’m not sure I’ll be dressing up though, sorry – I do always think about it, but it never really goes any further than that. Although I have always wanted to be She-Ra, I think I’d make a good She-Ra!!! Did you know that her tag line was ‘Princess of Power’, how cool is that?!! If Phil does have a She-Ra outfit, I think I might have to fight him for it – he can be He-Man maybe?
