Interview with Don Diablo..ahead of Purrfect's 8th Birthday @ The Space, Leeds - Sept 26th
1.What did you want to be when you were young?

A filmdirector or before that a fulltime streaker.

2.You're from a country better known in dance music circles as for being the
hub of trance music - Tiesto, Ferry Corsten etc. Are guys like yourself,
Fedde Le Grand, Eric E, Bart B More etc. helping to redefine dutch
electronic music?

I definitely think so, although we have always been a country that has
spawned artists in many different genres of dancemusic. It just took a while
for the 'non-trance'' acts to get recognition in other countries.

3.Do you remember the first time you were in a club and heard one of your
productions being played? How does that feel?

The overall feeling kind of depends on the soundsytem and the crowd reaction,
but I definitely remember my ''first time''! I was at a big rave with 25,000
people and when I first heard a brief snippet of one of my tracks a major
shock went through my whole body. When the full track dropped and I saw the
whole place go crazy it felt like somebody transported me to another
dimension! from that day I decided I would never need to use any drugs to
get high!

4.What are your favourite places to play/visit/stay/relax?

I love New York and London when it comes to the big cities, but I also love
playing in the whole of Australia, because I really feel at home there and
there is a big musical connection. Right now I am thinking of leaving
Amsterdam, just not sure where I would be moving to yet.

5. What is the UK club scene like compared to back home?

U.K. clubbers are much more into the music, they party harder and are more
open to new music. In Holland a lot of people just wait untill they hear a
big record, which can be frustrating at times.

6. This will be your second time at Purrfect after a fantastic debut last
year. What have u been up to since then and what can we expect this time
round?

I have been doing shows around the globe, dropping e.p.'s and making remixes
like crazy since then. I will be dropping a lot of new material and probably
a lot of my remixes for artists like Mika, Cassius, Peaches, Frankmusik,
Larry Tee, Dragonette and Linus Loves as well as some exclusive edits during
my set at Purrfect! Oh and my latest single on DATA records of course:
''Hooligans''!

7. What producers are you into at the moment?

Alex Metric, Jesse Rose, Trevor Loveys, Treasure Fingers, Sidechains, Bird
Peterson, Louis la Roche and the list goes on!

8. Do you prefer producing your own music or remixing other peoples?

They both have their charms to be honest, but in the end it all depends on
who you are remixing. Right now I am getting a lot of remixrequests, so we
can be very picky, which means u get to work on tracks you really like,
which makes the whole process a lot more enjoyable!

9. What advice would you give to producers/ Dj's starting off?

Do not try to copy other people, try to be unique in your own little way.

10. Finally, what does the future hold for Don Diablo?

I am finishing of the release of my first international album on Sony right
now. Besides that I will be producing some other artists as well. Oh and I
will probably be doing a lot more shows in the UK this and next year,
playing at this year's Glastonbury festival was like a kick-off to a whole
new start!
