BEN GOLD INTERVIEW
---------------------------

After a string of successful productions and numerous sell-out UK appearances, man of the moment Ben Gold joins ELUSIVE in celebrating its first birthday. We took time out to catch up with Ben...

Q.
Hi Ben, this has been an amazing year for you, both in terms of production and DJ appearances. How are feeling about your career at the moment?

A.
Thank you. Yeah I’m pleased with how it’s all going. I don’t have any pressure to deliver my next single just yet, so I have plenty of time to work on my debut album. I’m still developing as an artist, so having no pressure is making my studio time a lot more productive. I’m looking forward to playing the new material in forthcoming gigs.

Q.
World class DJ Paul Oakenfold said; “Ben Gold is a talented young producer and definitely one to watch out for in the future!” How did it feel to receive such honoured praise?

A.
I met Paul at Turnmills in 2007, and asked him for the parts to a track he signed called Diamondback, by Mekka. However, they weren’t available, so I re-played what I needed too, and sampled the rest. That’s how I got signed to Perfecto, and then later toured with him for a week of sold out gigs in the UK! He is a legend in this scene, so that kind of praise is overwhelming.

Q.
We have all been enjoying your recent productions, which have received support from artists such as Armin, Paul Van Dyk, and Marco V. What have you got in the pipeline?

A.
My debut album. I’m not too sure on how long it’s going to take, but I’m prepared to spend how ever long is needed. That’s what I have in the diary until at least Christmas this year.

Q.
As a DJ, you have played all over the globe in a very short space of time. Which gigs have stood out among the others?

A.
Playing the main room at Turnmills (VIP) in London stands out. The venue was amazing, the crowd were educated, and the sound system/DJ booth were superb. Also, all the gigs on the Paul Oakenfold tour I was a part of were brilliant. As is every time I play at Amplified!

Q.
You are resident at Amplified, Derby’s rapidly growing trance promotion, where you are a firm favourite with the crowd. What is it people love about your sets?

A.
I have always thought DJing was about performing, not just playing tunes. So interaction plays a big part, but more importantly, I enjoy myself and I think this comes across in my sets.

Q.
In your eyes, what is happening to the trance scene at the moment? Do you think it will ever be as popular as it was in the 90’s?

A.
People will always want to go clubbing, see their favourite DJ, and hear new music. So for those reasons I think it has a chance. But it was completely different ten years ago. The digital market has enabled many more producers to release music, but with that you also get a lot of rubbish released. Each year, a different trend is set. So we’ll have to wait and see if one of the trends is as big as the one in the 90’s. But what we call trance now isn’t what trance was back then. This just shows the genre has evolved, and is still evolving.

Q.
If you could pick any DJ to play a back to back set with, at any time in history, at any venue: who would it be, when and where?

A.
A back to back set with Armin, At Turnmills (London) on the final night at the venue.

Q.
When your not DJing or producing music, what do you do to chill out?

A.
I play football a couple of times a week. I have an Xbox which I use a lot too. I also cook most nights; I find it enjoyable, and a nice way to unwind after work.

Q.
Tell us a little known fact about yourself.

A.
I played semi-pro football for Beaconsfield for a season when I was 18. But I wanted to go clubbing on a Friday, mainly to Peach (Camden Palace, London) instead, so I axed the football.

Q.
Will you reveal who you voted for in the top 100 DJ’s this year? :)

A.
1. Ben Gold (Everyone votes for their self, right?)
2. Armin Van Buuren
3. Ferry Corsten
4. Gareth Emery
5. John O’Callaghan

Thanks Ben, see you soon!
