THE THRILLSEEKERS INTERVIEW
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

With Elusive's first birthday taking place this Friday, we thought we'd chat to our headliner, trance legends The Thrillseekers, otherwise known as Steve Helstrip!

Q.
Hi Steve, first of all it’s a pleasure to welcome you to Leicester! What have The Thrillseekers been up to today?

A.
Well, it’s only 10am, so not a lot! Had breakfast with my family, walked the dog and emptied the bins!

Q.
Your three Night Music albums and supporting tour dates over the last few years have helped propel you to no.45 in the Top 100 DJ’s! Can you tell us a little about how you conceived and developed the concept?

A.
It was really to show the diversity of the music I play out as a DJ. Tied-in with a worldwide tour, it kept be busy!

Q.
Will there be a fourth instalment in the Night Music series?

A.
There are no current plans for the fourth, but that’s not to say there won’t be one in the future.

Q.
On the production front you have been very busy, with a remix of Chicane’s Poppiholla receiving critical acclaim. What tracks and collaborations have you got in the pipeline?

A.
I have four new collaborations which I’m working on. I’d rather keep the details close to my chest until they’re ready to roll out. I’ve just finished a new Thrillseekers instrumental, called Savanna, which will be released on Armada.

Q.
It is rumoured your smash hit ‘Synaesthesia’ is due for a re-release in 2009. Is there any truth to this?

A.
Armada has picked-up the rights to the track, and are working on something tasty. I can’t say if it will see a re-release in 2009 or whether it will be next year.

Q.
Your popularity overseas has led to a busy international DJ schedule. What makes your UK appearances special?

A.
I love to play in the UK because it’s where I feel at home, and where my interest in the whole scene developed. It’s also easier to connect with the crowd as there are no cultural barriers.

Q.
Having been heavily involved in the scene for the last ten years, you have seen trance music’s various evolutionary phases. How do you feel about this and where do you think the genre is going?

A.
This is a question I get asked all the time! It’s impossible to say where it’s going, as it twists and turns as each new influential track breaks through. I’m still a huge fan of the euphoric and uplifting sound, but love some of the more technical and driving genres which come around from time to time.

Q.
What do you think smaller nights like Elusive contribute to the scene?

A.
For me the small, intimate, venues are the real clubs. The people that come to events like this come for the music and the people, not just to be seen at a particular venue. So they fill that void which sometimes exists in some of the bigger venues.

Q.
What advice would you give to aspiring DJ’s trying to break into the circuit?

A.
Simply to believe 100% in what you are doing and never give up. If you have any doubt about your sound, you’ll fail.

Q.
Which other DJ’s do you admire?

A.
I saw Moby play a few months back, which was awesome!

Q.
You have played over 500 gigs in 70 different countries around the world. Which one stands out for you and why?

A.
If I had to choose one stand out gig it would be the Gods Kitchen event I played at in Melbourne. It was for around 12,000 people, all of whom were so up for it, and the stage was ridiculous! It was about twelve stories high and had some of the best eye candy I’ve ever seen.

Q.
Any hints on the kind of set we can expect at Elusive?

A.
Expect some quality melodic trance with a few twists! And my new track, Savanna, of course!

Q.
Finally, tell us a little known fact about yourself!

A.
I’ve appeared on the Des O’Conner show way back in the day I was in a boy band! LOL.

Thanks Steve!

Thank you. Can’t wait for the event!
