Grand finale

This was my first visit to Storm, and it was clear to see why it has such a fantastic reputation and twice been voted best big club in the UK. For a start, there was an absolutely stunning line up, with cheap-as-chips ticket prices.

Second, a superb venue, with two good sized rooms, podiums, décor, and the different levels affording a spectacular view wherever you stood.

But, third, the crowd was simply awesome. Storm Fright Night was absolutely rammed with up-for-it punters, dancing from the off, staying till the end, cheering their favourite tracks, shaking hands with strangers, putting their hands in the air and their feet through the floor… They were friendly, respectful, coherent (no one dribbling on the floor here that I saw!), and so many had made the effort to dress up in brilliant Halloween (and other!) costumes. It made for the best possible party atmosphere.

There were so many top DJs on the bill that I wanted to see that I was mostly moving from room to room all night.

I did get there reasonably early, though, as I like to catch the warm up sets, and I thought Daley’s was one of the best of the night! Hard, fast, danceable – just how we like it… Some of the other highlights I remember were the set from Ben Stevens, Rodi Style doing ‘Age of love’, Paul Maddox Live playing his & Karim’s ‘Double edged sword’ and the remix of JX ‘You belong to me’, Glaz playing Chris Comben’s ‘Carrier signal’, and Adam M playing ‘Sweat box’…

However the highlight of the night for me, and the reason loads of us traveled many miles to come all the way to Coalville, was the closing set in the main room, by Marc Johnson. This was a special set – so special that I even missed the set by my fav Karim in the other room to see it (happy birthday to him, btw!). It was Marc’s last ever set, bringing down the curtain on a 15-year clubbing career that has given enormous pleasure to all of us who like dancing to the hardest and fastest in repetitive beats.

It was the perfect place for Marc to say goodbye – playing to a massive, appreciative crowd at the biggest and best hard house club in the country. Loads of his friends and fans were there to hear the best, most consistent, most energizing, most powerful and hardest set of the night from the man who always delivers. For me, going mental one last time to him playing some of the classics of the genre (‘Rock da spot’, ‘Dreams’, ‘Whizz bang’) plus his own awesome tunes (in particular ‘Hyperscum’ and ‘Nails’ rmx) - was a moment of total, euphoric release. As the set drew to a close, however, it was also a very sad moment for those of us who have followed Marc’s musical career...

This was also Garbo’s final night as promoter of this superb club night, and he said a few words at the end to say goodbye, before Marc let rip with his encore, his blistering, mental remix of ‘Block party’. Thanks Garbo for doing such a superb job with Storm and in particular by putting together such a memorable night, and thanks Marc for many of the best nights of music I've had out clubbing...

Storming!

Sadly, we have now seen the back of Marc Johnson DJing :o(
