This article is about DeXstarZ @ red (Sleaford) in Lincoln (UK), Sat 21 Feb
Dexstarz is been a brand which ran for a short period in 2000 starting at a club in melton mowbray with residents Justin Bourne, Princess SKB and Casper along with showcasing the best in underground and up n coming styles of dance. it now returns bigger and better for 2009.
We have now taken control of sammys night club in sleaford running weekly in this amazing venue to bring music styles to previously untouched areas. Gracing the decks as out resident dj is the infamous jack richards, a man who has simply done it all. Jack has been in the industry for over 30 years now running events such as nailed, stamp, peggatys, flog it, arbuckles and not forgetting the legendary barn which used to host 3000 people a month and still to this day one of lincolnshires best rated events. Jack is probably best know for his radio work over the years, his co ownership of the tektonek label and not to forget The Propa Little Madams.
Now we have conrtrol of the super club sammys we aim to please ears by playing a wide range of dance styles throughout the night ranging from house, techno, commercial dance, hard dance and trance with special weekly guest djs. DeXstarZ will be a free event every week untill 1am in the morning as we all know how moneys tight at the moment but we all still need a good party. Drinks are cheap and there are promos and competitions weekly by the club. This club needs to be seen to be believed, it may be in the sleepy town of sleaford but it sure pleases everyone who has atteneded recent events.
next were going to speak to the man himself:
Jack, you reached celebrity status in the 80's why have you chosen never to do an for DSI before?
I obviously wasnt that much of a celebrity, i think i was interviewed when DSI first started at The Barn but i didnt take it seriously and was quite rude to the young lad who was doing it and to be honest i wasnt really into the internet. As for being a celebrity i think im recognised more now as:
that bloke who used to... Princess SKBs dad! Dave The Elfs father in Law! ... or Jason Speeds gay lover!
How has the scene changed over the years since you started out?
I can answer this in one sentence, UNFORTUNATELY THE UNDERGROUND SCENE WENT COMMERCIAL
can you elaborate? Firstly i would like to say DJs begging and pleading for peoples votes would have been knocked out in my day, anybody that was any good recieved recognition they deseved without asking for it. secondly back in the day ( a term i hate ) clubbers flocked to venues for the music and the vibe, most of us djs were geeks doing our thing. Technically not brilliant but believed in what we were doing and new how to entertain and please a crowd, then came along the superstar DJs. Now it seems everybody in some way or another is the next big thing. In certain genres of music there are far too many DJs + Promoters running too many little nights with the same little clicks ( i know because i fell into this trap myself as both a dj and a promoter ) where i found myself going from booking professional artists to booking unknown djs with a lot of mates, just to get bodies through the door and as a dj playing at places for nothing to nobody just to return the favour. This unfortunately in my opinion is what has killed alot of the scene.
Do you think the scene can be revived and how?
I dont know about it being what it used to be but there are still very good nights both large and small running sucessfully and alot of genuinley talented djs and producers out there so its not all doom and gloom. We just need to give more support to the people who are getting it right
why do you think you are still being booked weekly after all this time, as most DJs and promoters never really last that long?
Basically its because i stil believe in what im doing and that the genuine clubber is the most important person in the building.
Whats your proudest achievements in music?
The first is making tracks with my daughter Princess SKB The second is playing B2B with my daughter The third was turning a disused farm building, miles from anywhere into a cult and legendary venue
Your last answer threw me off slightly as i thought you were going to mention some of the massive events you have played at.
Nohing compares to The Barn considering it started on a sunday morning with about 15 people, holes in the roof and shit on the floor ( and everybody telling me it will never work ) within a year grew to a twice weekly with 2 rooms and sometimes 3 sound systems. It is the only place ive ever known that ran at capacity for 3 years untill it was shut down because it was too popular.
Whats your favourite style of music?
To play and make is anything techno based but theres nothing i like better in the car than listening to demis roussos and bobby goldsboro
Who are your favourite artists and influences?
Obviously my baby girl, Mac Zimms, steve mac, Dj Arcane, Sam Reeve and my partner in crime Jason Speed.
What do you hope to achieve with dexstarz and why did you decide to bring it back?
I didnt decide to bring it back, it was thrust upon me by David and also the club ( Sammys ). I relish the opportunity of once again running a weekly event where i can build a crowd and a party atmosphere with a mixture of music styles that you can really only achieve by running weekly. Hopefully this will take off as the venue, sound and lighting system is one of the best i have seen in a long time. It is the sort of venue that djs want to play in and clubbers want to party in. Although im happy to be weekly resident, as with all my other events would like expose some new talent and find residents to join me and put me in the shade once again.
most clubs are struggling to get people in the doors at the moment, how do you think this has happened and why do you think you can do it weekly?
i think my answer a few question ago will explain alot, i hope this will work because:
a. the music policy will not be the same all night long so offers alot more in one night b. we are encouraging genuine clubbers by offering free entry before 1am then stinging the piss-heads after 1 although we love the piss-heads really so we put weekly drinks promos on
Outside of your music what else do you enjoy?
pleasuring myself in woolies window, martial arts and tattooing people.
What is it with you wearing womens ugg boots?
i am quite concerned about this myself as i have about 5 pairs in a variety of colours and think im going to look a complete twat wearing them in the summer, also i like to be intouch with my feminine side. Have you got a problem with a man in comfortable shoes?
Do you feel too old in a scene dominated by younger people and do you lie a bout your age?
No, ive never lied about my age im 23. i dont think it is dominated by younger people, theres still quite a few of us oldies about fortunatley the promoters of most clubs are very kind when i play, they usualy dim the lights, from a distance i look a good 6 months younger than my 48 years. Thanks for asking that question son. Is there any advice you would like to give to the younger generation?
Do what you believe, Believe what you do, Lead dont follow.
Thanks to Jack for a honest insight into the industry which mat possibly offend some readers, If you want to hear jack ( or knock him out ) get yourselves down to DeXstarZ @ Sammys feb 21st and every week thereafter. Also check out tektoneks new releases on Trackitdown.
