This article is about KUBIK @ Carling Academy in Liverpool (UK), Fri 21 Apr 2006
We spoke exclusively to the golden boy of Godskitchen before his headline debut set at Kubik to find out exactly what inspires this young man and what he has planned for the future.
Hi Mark, well you've just been taken on as the new Godskitchen resident, how does that feel?
Absolutely starstruck. It just doesn’t register that it’s the same place I used to go with all my mates dancing to Armin. The club is becoming like a second home and at the moment, I couldn’t think of any better place to be!
What first inspired you to get into DJ'ing?
I used to love listening to all types of dance music, and a friend of mine had decks; I decided I wanted to learn and started out with happy hardcore music. I soon made the transition to trance and the rest they say…is history!
You're now a part of the very successful agency Ornadel Management and Mainstage Artists, how did that come about initially?
I used to go clubbing a lot and always used to see Guy rocking the crowds with an enthusiasm and love for the music that other DJ’s seemed to lack. I sent him tapes, tracks I’d made on Ejay and he always got back to me with constructive criticism, fuelling my desire to continue and strive to be better. I noticed on his website one day that he was hosting a competition, so I entered and won it, having my mix aired on his MoS show. I emailed one day cheekily saying “how about you take me under your wing like Jules did for Eddie?!” and unbelievably had an email back saying “come to the offices next week for a chat with the agent, I think we may have some space on the roster for new blood…
What has been you most memorable gig to date?
It has to be closing Godskitchen after Tiesto; and then after my set having him come down the stairs and give me the thumbs up. Personally at the time, I nearly fell over!
Your productions are getting great feedback from some of the top DJ's, how important do you think it is for a DJ to have productions behind them now?
Hugely important. In this day and age where production equipment is easily come across, it means that new producers can make themselves heard; and talent that would have otherwise been hidden can emerge. There are thousands of bedroom DJs out there who can probably beat match as well as any of the big name jocks, but you have to stand out from the crowd and prove that you are an all round artist, with something new and fresh to offer the scene.
Who do you enjoy most playing alongside and why? and who would you like to DJ with that you haven't had the chance to yet?
I love playing with Jules, as we get on really well and both have the same sort of humour. However, Above & Beyond’s Jono Grant is probably my favourite friend to play alongside as we both are really into Derren Brown and love to spend a few minutes after the gig with the clubbers guessing their thoughts! I would still love to play after PvD.
What can the KUBIK crowd expect from your set?
Energy, eclecticism (variety), and hopefully something they haven’t heard before; I want to make people smile!
Apart from DJ'ing what does Mark Eteson enjoy doing?
Poker!! I go to the gym 3 times a week and play a lot of football
What do you have lined up for this year with regards to DJ'ing and producing?
I have an exciting year ahead with Gods, I am just nearing completion on a mix compilation for Hooj / Lost Language camp; and have two of my tracks signed to come out in the summer; with remixes from Marcos and G&M Project. I’m also really looking forward to playing at the worlds biggest street parade in Switzerland in August, 1 million people!
Do you have any tips for aspiring DJ's?
Motivate yourself and stay focused and determined. It doesn’t happen over night! I’m 23 now and started bedroom DJing when I was 17, but it’s definitely proof that if you really have the drive to do something you can make it happen.
Nice one mate cheers for taking the time out for us.
Were lookin forward to seein ya on the 21st. Make sure u make us proud :-P
