This article is about KUBIK @ Carling Academy in Liverpool (UK), Fri 19 May 2006
In the build up to Kubik on May 19th, we spoke to Belgiums trance master FRED BAKER. We got to know a little more about the man that has churned out tunes that have ripped the back out of every club they've been played at!!! Read on...
Excuse any spelling mistakes or grammer errors, he is Beligiun after all :-P
Hi Fred, You've really burst onto the trance scene at a phenomenal rate with all your powerful productions. What first inspired you to get into producing and DJ'ing? The best inspiration for me is to see when the crowd becomes happy and that’s really important for me to work in a good mind.
All your tunes have been well and truly caned by the KUBIK DJ's, not to mention the biggest names in the industry, how would you describe you style? I’m a “tech-trance” dj… I love to make a combination between melodies and techno.
Which production of yours do u feel had the biggest impact on your career? The biggest impact was without any doubt Y-TRAXX included in the “Kevin & Perry Go Large” movie but also GrooveZone “Eisbaer”… after that I made a lot of new productions but these ones are references !
You have collaborated with a wide range of producers, who do u feel you work with most easily enabling u to produce incredible records? In my country M.I.K.E. and Airwave are the producers … and also friends ! We have the same feeling to produce music together…
From being brought up in Belgium your DJ'ing career has taken you all over the world, which county sticks out as being the most memorable apart from the UK and why? In UK, the most important thing for me was when Goodgreef asked me to play with Eddie Halliwell … I knew it will rock and the parties were so amazing… And more, Eddie is a such a nice Dj and my friend !!!!!!!!
How do u find the British scene? This scene is AMAZING… I love the British crowd because they know me more than I thought and they really appreciate the music.
What can the KUBIK crowd expect to hear from your set? I will try to make this combination between melodies and techno, including a lot of my records. I will play with the crowd because I like it and I’m already sure that I will enjoy this night with them !
Which DJ's do u enjoy playing alongside and who do u want to DJ with that you haven't yet had the opportunity to? I’ve never played with Djs like Tiesto, Armin, Paul Van Dyk and Ferry Corsten.. I would like to but… life continues ! And I’ve already played with great names like Eddie Halliwell (he’s my buddy in UK!!!), Marco V, Scott Project, M.I.K.E., Adam Sheridan, Marcel Woods, Simon Patterson, and a lot of other names… And we have all the same respect between us… We love music !!!
What are your plans for the year ahead? I would like to play in big festivals during this summer… for the rest, I will play in gigs, producing new tracks and I hope to be ranked in the djmag Top 100 this year… J
What does Frederic De Backer aka Fred Baker do for fun when not travelling the world DJ'ing? When I have the time, I like to do a little sport (jogging, squash, football and tennis), walking relax with my dog (a lovely rotweiller), to go to the restaurant and drink something with my friends… I’m a normal guy, hehehe !
Nice one Fred, thanks for taking the time out, we'l see you on the 19th.
