This article is about Under the Stairs @ 333 SHOREDITCH in London (UK), Fri 21 Nov 2008
Q. Firstly thanks for interview. Just by way of introduction, I understand there is a core three to SLDB, Theo WB, MdashO, Neil.v2, Who are you, what are your roles in the band?
A. Theo WB: well actually there's four of us now… I am the voice of the beast known as SLDB… I suppose I'm the lead singer but I have been known to play synths and write songs! Neil.v2: I play guitar and backing shouting!!lol!?
Tony Caracciolo: I'm the drummer in the band, and my role consists on mixing electronic and live drums along the music. I obviously represent a solid base regarding the groove. A friend of mine (an other drummer) always says when it comes to be asked “what job do you do?” He replies:”I make people dance”. That is the right answer, I believe.
Q. Now I know people are dying to know where the hell do you get a name like the Serious Lego Dancing Band?
A. Theo WB: Er… not sure …. I think Mo made it up? ? Neil.v2: yeah our original name was slightly offensive to certain members of the population.
Tony C: ….........................I'm not responsible for that! Q. You talk of using your own musical language, Conducive Binary, can you elaborate on this a little and perhaps how it impacts on SLDB’s musical style. A. Theo WB: It helps when writing songs… my advise is to use the word conducive as much as possible. Neil.v2: I suspose it's a kinda of wave length we are all on or unspoken understanding when we are writing a new tune, we just seem to know what other members of the band want to hear from our instrument.?
Tony C : As I am French, I do get the idea, but I'm still learning.
Q. Your clearly have quite a diversity of styles within the band, how was it that SLDB came to be and what influences were to calling upon at that time.
A. Theo WB: I think the whole thing can be put down to, on my part, listening to Hall and Oates as a child and wishing I could express things through synths… but then Trent Reznor and Butch Vig turned up and turned my world upside down! Neil.v2: I listen to all kinds of music, if it's got a good beat and melody it doesn't matter what genre it is, I think each of our individual influences combined help shape our sound.?
Tony C: My music background comes from rock, metal, pop, jazz, funk, live drum n' bass, a bit of everything really. But concerning SLDB I take influences from Daft punk, Justice, Bob Sinclar, Fat Boy Slim, Prodigy, Pendulum, Moby. Also from other drummers who explore the electronic world such as Johnny Rabb and Jojo Mayer with his band Nerve.
Q. So you’ve played a gigs far and wide, if there is one place you’ve played that you will always go back to, where is it and why?
A. Theo WB: Reading Uni! Neil.v2: hell yeah, Reading Uni was crazy!! 1000+ all there to see another band, we turn up and caused a riot!! We had them all chanting Serious Lego Dancing Band but had no cd's or merch to give out, we got offered three other gigs in Reading after people seeing us play there and got offered a headline slot in January!!?
Tony C: Reading Uni! Good stage, good audience, amazing staff too, everything! Q. I see there are plenty of tracks up on your myspace (www.myspace.com/sldbmusic), you’ve clearly spent a lot of time writing, have you got some new music in the pipeline for us?
A. Theo WB: Yeh there's plenty of new stuff on the way! Neil.v2 defo new tunes, we are writing all the time.?
Tony C: Yes, lots, with other approach of musical types.
Q. Looking forward to joining Live-in Music at Under the Stairs on the 21/11/08, and of course we cant wait to hear you shaking that basement room, have you anything special lined up for the night? What can people expect from the SLDB experience?
A. Theo WB: Fire, Brimstone, Hailstones, Tornadoes..Lightning, Smoke… oh and some dancing! Neil.v2: People with there mouths open saying WTF??? We get that quite a bit until we've played a couple of tunes and the crowd start to get us!!lol!?
Tony C : Fat sound and Dance Music.
Q. The last few years has seen the lines between electronic artists and bands heavily blurred, we’ve seen Phil Keirans ‘Alloy Mental’, Hyper coming back to the scene with his new band and the likes of the Klaxons and Hot Chip seemingly going the other way, Do you think this emphasis on live performance indicates the death of the DJ or are we looking at a happy co-existence?
A. Theo WB: Well I think the live element always complements electronic music… but if there's no panache and pyrotechnics involved then I'm always dubious…. And I think everyone agrees lighting is important… this is a new age in terms of DJ performance… look at Daft Punk and Justice.. point proven! Neil.v2: I agree.
Tony C: Well I think it's 2 different types of performance, different ways of doing it, we do stage performance, the DJ does turntables. For us it's more about “sound control” if I may say. But in general I think we do the same thing, we just play music really, no matter how you do it, as long as the audience is responding and enjoying it, that's the most important thing, isn't it?
Q. And we just have to ask, what’s the deal with ‘Extreme Crossing’?, I think that one must have passed me by in the arcades of my youth. A. Theo WB: er… It involves crossing the road dangerously…. I wouldn't advise trying it unless you are a trained professional! Neil.v2: Or a health fit badger!!lol!
Tony C Don't waist your time!
Thanks very much guys, look forward to hearing a little conducive binary at 333 on the 21st.
