This article is about 54 Music Launch Party - Audiojack, Inland Knights, Kanio... @ 54 in London (UK), Fri 06 Mar
On 6th March 2009 54 Music will officially be open for business. After 6 months of searching every corner of the globe and scouring through hundreds of entry demo’s, the winners of 54 Music’s search for the biggest producer of tomorrow are ready to be revealed. And to showcase the incredible talent uncovered in this once in a lifetime competition opportunity and prepare them for their production debut at the Winter Music Conference, expect a party to end all parties... And featuring on the night alongside Inland Knights, Shur-I-Kan and Kanio are the incredible Audiojack...
With a musical presence and maturity beyond their experience Audiojack are arguably one of the most talented and exciting electronic music acts to develop in recent years. Signed to Ralph Lawson’s 20:20 Vision Recordings for their original productions and forthcoming debut album and with remixes under their belt for labels such as Renaissance, CR2, Leftroom, Great Stuff and Audio Therapy Audiojack have proved a unique ability to produce credible underground music whilst appealing to a wide enough audience to surpass the sales and airplay of many of their peers.
Their music has gathered an enviable and varied list of international DJs who support their sound including Groove Armada, Sasha, Carl Cox, Deep Dish, Paul Woolford, Lee Burridge, James Zabiela, Nic Fanciulli, Timo Maas, Erol Alkan, Luciano, Steve Lawler, Craig Richards, Meat Katie, John Digweed, Laurent Garnier and Danny Tenaglia. No surprise then why their profile is increasing so rapidly that world domination is just around the corner...
What have you been up to this year so far? Anything exciting been going on?
Yeah it’s been pretty good so far, we’ve just got back from a tour of Brazil which was a lot of fun. We toured Mexico and Asia in January then we’ve had a few European gigs in between so we’ve been keeping busy. We’ve also had more time in the studio as we finished our album so we’ve been able to work on a couple of new remixes and some new original stuff. We’ve got some ace new plugins which were buzzing about.
How do you think you’ve developed as a duo since you first started playing together? Have your own tastes changed much musically?
We spend a lot of time together outside of Audiojack therefore were exposed to a lot of the same musical influences at the same time. Both our tastes change so quickly which is one reason we find label A&R very difficult but generally they change at a similar time and one of us can quite easily inspire the other by turning up with a handful of tasty new tunes.
We’ve always stuck to the simple ethos we chose when we started making music – that we’ll make and play music to make people dance. That’s all. So this can take many formats, but if the groove is good and the bass line is good and there are interesting ideas and we can both be self critical then that’s a good start.
At the moment, the huge minimal craze that happened a couple of years ago seems to be edging back more towards a house sound, do you think this is a good or bad thing?
Whatever makes people have a great night is a good thing. There are a lot of great tracks with a housey vibe around now using live instruments and with a general carnivalesque vibe and they’re going down very well at gigs. Were very happy about the way music is moving, it’s going to be a phenomenal summer, some of the promos we’ve been sent for summer release are amazing.
You have been heavily involved in the production competition to tie in with the launch of new label, 54 Music, and are remixing one of the winning tracks, what did you think to the calibre of entries?
Our involvement came in after the A&R guys at 54 picked their favourite 10 tracks then we chose the eventual winner from those 10. There were 3 stand out tracks from the 10, the others were decent but lacked a certain edge. When we get asked to do remixes a lot of the time labels / A&R folk make the common mistake of sending us a track that they’ve thought ‘this sounds a bit like an Audiojack track, let’s get them to remix it’. This isn’t what we look for in a track to remix as we wouldn’t really add much. We prefer really nice sounds, a good vocal or hook which we can then make into an Audiojack style track.
What do you intend to do with the track you have been given to rework?
The track we eventually went with is quite tough and we never like to ‘rework’ tracks, we prefer to remake them our own way. Which is what we’ve done with this, We’ve taken our favourite loops, sounds and vocals out of the track and used them to make a new track, adding some new sounds of our own and giving the remix a different vibe which often is the best way to make a diverse release that appeals to a wider audience.
What’s your opinion on competitions such as these, do you think they are fair when artists such as yourselves have had to move up the ranks with sheer hard work?
Anyone making music needs the talent and self promotion skills to get their tracks heard or played by the right people to get their break. A competition like this won’t give people without the talent a chance but it does give people who aren’t great at self promotion a chance to get their music promoted and a chance to win a break.
You’re debut album is out in a couple of months, what can people expect from it in a nutshell? Is there a track you can pick out that you think may follow the success of ‘Robot’? Or is the album a different sound for you?
The best thing people can do is pick up a copy and listen for themselves. We both have different favourite tracks on the album, as does our label boss Ralph Lawson and the few people who’ve had advance promos of the complete article like James Zabiela have different ones again so its really down to personal taste. All the tracks are club playable and can all stand alone as individual entities but the album has been made as set piece with interludes that make the album blend together so it can be listened to from start to finish. This decision was made after being inspired by albums like Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark side of the moon’ or The Prodigy’s ‘Music for a jilted generation'.
You’re playing at the launch night for 54 Music alongside Inland Knights, Shur-I-Kan and Kanio, in the intimate surroundings of bar 54, are you looking forward to the night? Have you played alongside any of these artists before?
Yeah we played with Kanio last year in Denmark. That event was named Best event in Denmark last year at a Danish dance awards. He’s also remixed for our label. So were looking forward to catching up with him. Should be a great night, it’s certainly a great line up, were big fans of Inland Knights and Shur-I-Kan too.
What else is on the cards for you in 2009, where will you be spending most of your summer tour dates?
We only have our tour diary complete through to the end of April at the moment but up until then we’ll be taking in a North American tour including gigs at WMC in Miami and Avalon in Hollywood. We’ve also got a 7 date album tour of Australia. Hopefully we’ll be playing at some of the big summer festivals and of course in Ibiza, the best place on earth. ?
