This article is about SLAANG @ a secret location in London (UK), Sat 05 May 2007
An absolute master in the studio, Jesse has quietly been taking the house music world by storm with his deep, techy grooves and quirky production stylings. Superb remixes for the likes of Layo & Bushwacka, Elite Force, Krafty Kuts & Tim Deluxe and Claude von Stroke sit happily beside original stunners like ‘You’re All Over My Head’ in his already impressive body of work, and the output of his label Front Room Recordings has been similarly tasty. We grabbed a chat with him as he prepares for a DJ set at SLAANG’s next warehouse party this Saturday 5th May in London Bridge....
So Jesse...what’s new? What have you been up to this week?
Been busy touring, in the last months been over on Australia, around Europe and in the States...just back from Basics at the weekend, which was as always such a great night in Leeds. I also noticed my EP Itchy Dog has just been released on Dubsided this week (they never tell me when records are released!) so nice to see that one in the shops.
What were the reasons behind your move to Berlin? How have you been getting on there?
I just fancied a change, I love London but fancied trying out a new place and as I’ve been coming to Berlin for years now it was the obvious choice. The more I live here the more I like it. It has got a town vibe but everything you need from a city, just perfect for where I’m at right now.
Was there a point you could put your finger on from the last couple of years where your career really went into overdrive?
Not really, I’m always working, so someone else might be able to see it more clearly. There has been some nice support the last years from the likes of Dubsided in the UK and Get Physical in Germany and panoramabar giving me my night and all the press support melts into one I suppose.
Was your label Front Room Recordings hit hard by the bankruptcy of Intergroove, your distribution company? What’s the situation with distribution now?
Since I started front room we’ve had four distributors go under on us from Prime to Ideal etc, so when I heard the news I new that we would be able to carry on even though we had lost of ten thousand pounds but I just felt really bad for the artists because every time this happens it’s not just the label that feels the pain. We are now with Word and Sound, who have really helped us get back on our feet.
How’s the Induceve album you’ve done with Dave “Switch” Taylor? It says on your website it was due to come out on Classic...?
We ended up scrapping it. At the time I was really pissed because I really wanted it to come out but now I look at it as a good learning experience.
All the “fidget” crew like yourself, Switch and Herve have been commissioned to remix some really big artists in recent times. Have you started to think about which others you’d love to get your hands on?
I’m more thinking about who I’d like to produce. It would be great to go into the studio and work with someone like Justin Timberlake or Kelis and twist their shit out.
Noice. Which other producers are really pushing your buttons at the moment?
Deadest (aka Cass & Mangan) – they’re doing an album for Front Room I’m really proud of. Oliver $, who is a great young house producer from Berlin and all the hip-hop kids like the E-40 crew and of course I’m loving Timbaland productions.
Do you prefer remixing to producing original material? Both have their attractions obviously...
After two years of near enough solid remixing non-stop, I fancy just doing some of my own stuff but both have great sides. Remixing is cool if the parts are fat.
You will be playing in a warehouse in London for SLAANG on 5th May. Do you miss playing frequently in your old town?
I still come over every couple of months to do fabric or The End but it’s great to come and check out a new venue and a warehouse vibe sounds great to me.
Para One (LIVE), Mock & Toof, Kissy Sell Out, Padded Cell (LIVE) and Punks Jump Up all join you on the line-up. Which out of that merry lot tickles your fancy the most?
Mock & Toof should be cool....
If you’re not dishing out beats in the studio or a club, what are we likely to find you listening to?
Hip-hop beats.
And finally ‘take it & twist it’ – as it says on your MySpace – what does that refer to?
In a way it refers to the style I make and play tracks but it’s also the title to my remixes compilation coming out later this year.
Thanks Jesse....keep taking and twisting it and we’ll see you down at SLAANG!
