RADIOCLIT get ready to block rock Shoreditch

Global music magpies Radioclit have been mashing up the best in house, grime, hip-hop, disco, electro, crunk, kuduro, baile funk and more since they dropped their 'Careful Clit Clit' mix CD back in 2004, working with the likes of Bonde Do Role, M.I.A. and Switch in the process. We had a bit of banter with them ahead of their appearence at Man Make Music's Shoreditch Block Party on Sunday 23rd September in Lahndahn....

So...sorry to cover old ground but how did you guys first meet? Do you believe it was fate?

Johan was working as a producer with French hip-hop group TTC and dating a French girl who all told him to hook up with some dude called Etienne, who was working for Big Dada records. We did hook up and started to make some mixtapes together, all for fun. After a while people started to ask us if we produced or would remix some stuff as Radioclit and we kinda started to experiment with production together.

Johan came from many years of music production and Etienne from many years of DJing so it all came pretty natural, at least after a while. We compliment each other very well in soo many ways and there’s no way, as with anything in life, that it was just a coincidence.

How would you describe your sound in 10 words? It's pretty hard to pin down but is there a central vibe?

Global mutant Radioclit tearing an extra asshole for future music…

Who have been your most important hook-ups? Who has really helped you along the way?

The two of us meeting was obviously the best hook-up. Through our connections in different fields we toured with people like Diplo, Switch, Bonde Do Role etc…all these people have helped. Grime people like Jammer and Trim have been really influential. M.I.A has been influential. Obviously our own totally unique connections like our Malawi friend Esau Mwamwaya is doing lot for us too, or at least will be. All these people lead to new people, leading to new people you know. And also the constant search for good music from all over the world is constantly creating amazing hook-ups. Latest is a guy from the Ivory Coast called Bab Lee, super good producer from the "coupé décalé" scene that we just starting work with.

That 'Divine Gosa' track of yours is on some pretty crazy shit...what's the story behind the track and have the electro crowd been picking up on it?

We started working with Diplo and Bonde Do Role for Bonde Do Role first album, and we had an early version of ‘Divine Gosa’, which kinda was our take on all those great acid house records from the Eighties. After a bit of co-producing with Diplo it ended up on Bonde Do Role’s 'With Lazers' album. But we felt the original dance version should be released too, so we retouched it quickly and now Switch and Sinden are putting it out 17th of September on Counterfeet records. It’s been well received though it’s still pretty unknown, but when we play it in clubs the feedback is amazing. It’s got a Switch remix and a Brodinski remix on it too, both fucking incredible.

You're playing at Man Make Music's Shoreditch Block Party on Sunday 23rd September. Are you fans of Sunday afternoon wrongness?

We’re fans of anything that seems wrong but is right. We usually don't know what day of the week it is unless our bookers tell us it's a day and we need to go somewhere to play, so really any day is cool. It’s gone be good though. It’s outside. We love playing outside.

What's been the craziest party you've ever played at?

We remember playing in a modern art museum in Glasgow in front of like 5 people two years ago when no one knew about us. It was when snap music like D4L was just starting and me and Johan were jumping around like crazy, tripping over the decks and having the time of our life vibing off our records...all the crunk and grime stuff was so much fresher at that time it feels. Also a set in a Swedish festival when we started in an empty little tent and by the end a riot broke out, like literally, and all the artists of the festival joined us on stage freestyling like crazy over ridiculous beats. Then we followed everybody to a house party and it lasted the whole night…we never saw that much energy from the crowd before. Good old days!
