Growing up in North West London through the 80’s Dean was heavily into rap music like Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions and Ice Cube which was a result of watching far too much MTV.

His first encounter with rave music was from a mates older sister listening to the "Deep Heat" albums throughout ’89-’90, at the time he was too young to know about the actual rave scene itself.

It wasn’t until about the end of the summer ’91 that a driver who worked for his Dad heard him playing a Deep Heat album, lent him a Carl Cox tape and basically explained about raves, from then on Dean was hooked.

His first rave was when he was 16yrs old - Ravelation NYE ’95-’96 at Wembley Arena and pretty much straight after that he became a weekly Labrynth regular as well as attending legendary raves like Helter Skelter, Slammin Vinyl, Dreamscape, United Dance and Hardcore Heaven to name a few.

1) You have been part of the scene for many years, as a raver and then as a dj/producer. Can you remember at what point and why you wanted to become a DJ??

I think ive been into rave music since about the age of 10 or so, obviously I was too young to go to raves, but I knew on the other side of the tape pack i was listening to, there was a guy playing records on some decks....tbh I cant actually remember the point when I said "I want to DJ" but by my 16th birthday I had decks (some dodgey pro 150 belt drive things.. technology at its best for the bedroom DJ !!), then buy NYE that year I was raving.. it kinda all went hand in hand.

2) What was it like the first time you saw your name next to a tune or on a album? Did you ever think that you would accomplish this when you first started out??

The 1st tune I released on a vinyl was on white label so ironically it didnt actually have my name on.. lol.. that was wicked tho, but the best feeling was to see my name as remixer next to 2 all time classics on the Ministry of Sound Helter Skelter Vs Raindance Hardcore 2007 compilation album (which came out Dec 2006).

Ministry dont actually send out a copy of it to everyone on the artist bill, so my missus bought me a copy, hehehe ive still got it in the plastic wrapper! I think its a kinda feeling of satisfaction that something you have made has been selected to go on and album series that subsequently has done over 1/2 million copies.

Pretty f**kin coool !!!

I think you never really think that far ahead when you start out making a tune, the main thing I always wanted to was to make a track that i could play in my set in a rave and to watch the dancefloor go nuts to it, 3 years later and about 15 tracks later, Im now compiling a mix album .. its mad!

" As a teenager I had the typical raver bedroom with flyers as wallpaper,
I spent my Saturdays going to Blackmarket, Unity & Remix Records buying tape packs "

3) On December 29th, Can You Feel It media will be releasing your album called Future rave Anthems. Did you get to choose any of the tracks on the album, if so why did you choose those tracks??

I totally compiled it myself. The tracks are all in a new genre of rave music thats been emerging over the past few years called "Rave Breaks". Its essentially taking the Old Skool Rave vibe and mixing it with modern day dance music influences & production - incorporating; breakbeat, hardcore, drum & bass, trance, electro and various other styles into one kinda music. Its very much in a similar way to which different elements of music were used to create the early 90's rave scene.

Compiling the tracks was a very very hard thing to do, because theres so many different styles involved in this genre of music I wanted to try and cover everything and get as many producers working together on the project as possible.

Theres so much good music out there, with so many new producers emerging hopefully I have covered as many bases as possible as well as having some massive new remixes of classic old skool tracks in for good measure.

Alot of the tracks have been tried and tested on the dancefloors by myself, Slipmatt, Billy Bunter, Ratpack & Eliis Dee etc over the past year so I picked the best from the bunch!

4) Being an original raver from back in the day, do you think the scene and music style has changed much over the years??

Ahhhh yeah .. dont think you wana get me started on this one we could be here a while. Its changed loads.. but from so many perspectives. I think the internet has played a big part in everything, from promoting to music sales to forums all sorts.. Its definatley something to be embraced! After all being a digital based album, Future Rave Anthems wouldnt be possible if it werent for that !

The rave scene in general has become a very different place since I was out raving back then, they used to cover so many styles of music in one arena and you would get about 8,000 ravers at the Sanctuary & rollers in Milton Keynes and they would all dance to the different music all night.

Nowadays with many ravers, music preference is very specialist and its very frowned upon to look outside of your preferred genre.

But then on the flipside, theres never been so many open minded people out in the ravescene liking so many different types of music.... its all mad !

" I think the internet has played a big part in everything, from promoting to music sales to forums all sorts "

5) While I was doing my research for this interview, i found that you are a Graphic Designer, who was influenced by the likes of PEZ and others. Do you have a favourite flyer/design that will always stick in your mind, that made you think I want to be able to do that'??

As a teenager I had the typical raver bedroom with flyers as wallpaper, I spent my Saturdays going to Blackmarket, Unity & Remix Records buying tape packs, records and getting all the newest flyers. I was pretty obsessed with the art thing, I've stored boxes of flyers that I have collected over the years at my mums house still! lol

I went to college to learn graphic design with the intention to design flyers, I never really thought about anything else i dont think, I certainly didnt have aspirations to design the next bmw or anything like that !

I think the Helter Skelter Flyers are collectively Pez's best work, so there probably my favourite, i even did one of my final college pieces around his artwork!

The mad thing is I have since met Pez and regularly see him at raves... hes cool and very much larger than life !... lol.. for those who know !

"The rave scene in general has become a very different place since I was out raving back then "

6) Do you have a favourite piece of artwork that you have done yourself??

The next one I do.

7) You have been working along side the legend himself Billy 'Daniel' Bunter for some time, What is he like to work with?

Hahahaha do you really wana know ? .. hes a slave driver paying me a bowl of porridge a day ! .. lol.. if im good I get a spoon full of syrup on top !

No seriously.. he is.

Dans cool, everything is laced with good humour and a drive to move the music world forward.

What more can I say.....hes a legend.. if I say anything else he'll get a big head ! lol !! (he told you to put this question in didnt he ?)

8) Out of all the tracks on the album do you have a favourite??theyre all my favourite (thats the diplomatic answer)

The ones I did ! (thats the self promotional answer)

Mind Electric - Dirty Cash (Shimano remix) has had the best response from DJ's and in the clubs, but really sensation by myself has a big place in my production side because it set a marker for myself as it was the 1st time I had used some new production software. But also the remix of Top Buzz "Living in Darkenss" I did with Sparky was also the 1st colaboration I had done. I really do like quite a few different tracks because of different sections in each of them and the influences behind them too.

9) What have you got in the pipe line for 2009?? Can we expect lots more albums from Can You Feel It Media with your name on??

Yeah deffo ! Future Rave Anthems Vol 2 is already in planning, the response for Vol 1 has been so good, and new music is floading in, were on the way with that !

Ive got loads of studio time planned too and some more colabs with quite a few people.

Im also working on some drum & bass projects and some tearout breaks so watch this space..

10) If you could do a track with anyone, Alive or Dead, who would it be and why??

Err iI duno, too many people come to mind, Liam Howlett from pProdigy would be somewhere near the top, maybe Rachel Wallace.

I think someone like Mozart would come up with a bad ass piano rift ! So maybe him too !

11) What advice would you give some one who wants to get into producing either tunes or flyers, but doesnt know where to start??

In music production, do your homework read up on production techniques, watch tutorials on you tube or go on a course to learn. Failing that get as much professional studio time as you can afford, and hopefully your get some who can teach you the ropes. (big up Limey !!!).

Try to buy the best equipment you can afford because if you dont your only wish you had in 6 months time.

Try and make music that comes from inside you, dont copy other people. Its cool to use other peoples tracks as reference but be original.

Always check out the newest plug-ins and software, theres always something new to learn and thats the cool thing about it !

In flyer design, see alot of the above, art is in the eye of the beholder and all that !! lol.. but dont go cutting cows in half and stick them in a fish tank!

The internet can help in many ways for both things, so thats a very good place to start... and practice and practice !
