We've all got stories about how music changed our lives when we got into dance music, and the positive effect it had on our lives. How did you get into dance music and what did it change about your life?
I started singing in a R&B band when I was 15, we had a production and developing deal with a major record company but after a few years i realised that I wasn't really happy with where the music and set-up was going. My friend asked if I wanted to come to a rave in Lea-Valley, London. I don't know how I got up there because I was driving! Anyway the minute I stepped in there the music, people and atmosphere was so infectious that I knew from that day that i would never sing R&B again!! I remember jumping on stage dancing and I started chatting to Dan Donnelly from Suburban Base Records about music.... and then a few weeks later I recorded "I Feel This Way". So Dance music most definitely changed my life for the positive!
It's got to be massively exciting for you to stand up in front of massive crowds and sing to thousands of people, all of them feeling the words punctuate the beats and drops you frame with your lyrics. So our readers can get a taste of what's that like, could you explain as best you can how that feels for you?
Performing to a crowd of people whether its thousands or just a few is the most exciting and nerve-wrecking experience ever! the high adrenalin rush it what makes you want to come back for more and more!!
Many people love the dance music scene particularly old skool. It's a way of life for many people and represents something more real than the world of work and business Where do you think that the scene is going to go in the next few years?
To be honest I don't know..... I remember people used to say that rave or drum & bass wouldn't last for long that it was just a phase!! But 20years later this music is still on the scene and doesn't seem to be fading out at all! It would be great if more tracks made it through the main stream system..... but the great thing about music these days it that you can make a track, do a video and put it on myspace or youtube in a matter of weeks and so your music is being heard by thousands all over the world, to me, thats what keeps the music alive and why its still around today
How does it make you feel when you see that people in the scene consider your musical works as classic of the genre, and how do you keep up that level of musical brilliance?
I'm still quite shocked to be honest!!...I mean when people go on your Myspace and Facebook and say how the track inspires them and brings back great memories it really makes you sit back and think wow!! Who would of thought that a track that I wrote 19 years ago is still being played now!!....
Being around for as many years as you have, am sure you have worked with alot of different people. Would you like to give them a mention and tell us what you got up to?
Well I've done vocals for D'Cruze, Rhythm Section for the Midsummer Madness E.P, Blame, Good Gosh Records, Moving Shadow & Benny Page. I recently just finished a video in Spain with D.J Melo who's a Spanish DJ. I also lived in Europe for a few years and I recorded alot of dance tracks out there too. Currently I have been recording and touring with the Stereo MC's for the last 4 years.
I see that you are playing out alot in Germany this year. What other countries have you played in throughout your singing career? How do the crowds differ from the British ones?
Now I have to think..... I've been to many different countries South Africa, America all over Europe last year I was in places like Moscow, Ukraine places that you hear about but never imagine going there but through music you are so blessed to be able to travel and experience new places all the time! People are the same all over the world if they are into your music and feel the energy that you bring to them then you know that you've done you best!
So, Epidemik......we will be seeing you live with the MC Skibba Dee in March. How did you both get to meet? Is your material going to be released, if so...when?
I met Mc Skibba Dee a few years ago when we did Innovation in Tenerife. DJ Phantasy called me up and asked if I could do some vocals, when I heard the track I loved it instantly. I recorded the vocals in my studio sent it back to them and they loved it and we thought lets showcase his track at Epidemik!.....I don't know when the tracks going to be released hopefully soon!!
So what can we expect from you this year in terms of music? What projects are you working on?
Well hopefully I'll be doing another track with Skibba for his forthcoming album. I've just finished recording and making a video in Spain with DJ Melo, he's a Spanish DJ who also runs the Innovation nights in Spain. I'll also be recording and touring with the Stereo MC's in a few months. I've also got an idea for a track that I want to work on.
If you died at the ripe old age of 143 after having an absolutely fantastic life of being an singer for over a century....what would you like written on your gravestone?
