This article is about epidemik 14th Birthday Party @ AREA in London (UK), Sat 07 Nov
From past to present Epidemik take care of business as only they know… Catering for today’s future breed artists as well as the founders of our scene, on -this- note it is time to introduce another top tear: promoter, producer, host and like wise pioneer of today’s and yesteryear’s music sanction.
Highly acclaimed on the turntables, capable of playing full on Old Skool showcases, stepping it right up to date with the new Hardcore / Rave Breaks sounds. - His latest upfront hardcore mix setting standards all over from track selection, to the clean cut mixing of now it‘s a simplistic ‘POW!’! - Not to mention his presence in the Hard Dance scene seeing him help spear head Hard Dance as we know it to day…
Briefly taking a glimpse back in time, you can see him playing on all the main stages at events such as: Helter Skelter & Hardcore Heaven to name but a few…. Also not forgetting his time at the LEGENDARY - Club Labrynth & Raindance and above all his own baby that was Tasty.. It‘s a glittering array of achievements to say the least !
A recent venture on his musical journey has sadly seen him take more time off the decks than on, but can you blame him? - His passion burning brighter than the night sky for music, newly forming ‘Can You Feel It Media’ to channel his sounds and direction, there really is no stopping him make waves for 2009 and beyond! Confidently keeping the Helter Skelter name alive, and launching a series of successful albums it’s all good in the hood!
Having a HUGE part in making the last Epidemik the truly memorable night it was, with his back to back set with the legendary Twista it’s a pleasure to see him return this time in the hardcore arena - going back to back with another London LEGEND:D.J Vibes!
This will be a set to remember like wise the event it’s self! - So get your selves comfortable, it’s another London LEGEND for YEAR’S! - A FIRST class musical pioneer ‘CAN YOU FEEL IT!?’
Respect & honour - Billy Daniel Bunter is here!
Bill it’s amazing speaking with you today! - SO many questions in such a short space of time - here go’s nothing!!!
First off the mixing blocks, thank you very much for taking part today, it is highly appreciated! - How has your 2009 been so far….? If you would care to tell us about any highlights and even any low point’s that you could share with us please!?
"It’s been a roller coaster year as always. I’ve been so busy with Can You Feel It Media, that I’ve not had time to think. Highlights would have to be the release of Hardcore 2009 which went top 10. The launch of my house act The Full Time Superstars which has got high up in all the right charts, as well as people still continuing to support me at gigs all over the country … Off course there has been low points, life can work in mysterious way’s. As always I’ve had to deal with my fair share of fools. I deal with 100’s and 100’s of people so there is always the odd situation. I was also very sad at the loss of DJ Ginge from Labrynth, one of the 1st dj’s to ever inspire me."
Sadly (as stated in the intro!) you have taken time away from the decks some what. You have still played out at certain events, could you please tell us about a few of your bookings - and which arenas have really lifted you up!!?: )
"I used to really push to play out as much as possible every weekend. Where as now I try to keep to 1 to 3 gigs max a weekend. I love dj’ing more then ever, but am happier playing at one gig a night, then doing 1000 miles a weekend to fit in 6 gigs. I get about 5 booking requests a week, but try to separate every thing out. A lot of this is down to establishing the new company, but far more down to dedicating as much time to my Children as possible out side of music. Their 11 and 14 now and the music industry is in our family’s way of life 7 day’s a week, but the quality of our family’s ever day life is so important to them growing up, that it’s essential for me to get the right balance. Some thing I feel me and their Mum Sonya have done very well and are proud of."
"It’s hard to choose my favourite gig’s of the year but the following really stick in my mind! Raindance, Moondance, Epidemik, Pleasuredome, Uprising, Transmission, Bounce 2 This, Colours, Slide … The launch of our new night Can You Feel It Thursday’s and off course the Labrynth Reunion!"
Keeping within the musical field - Can You Feel It has been looking like it has been really busy…For the people that may not know can you please tell us a bit about it when it started and what it‘s about and where it‘s at!?….;)
" Can You Feel It is mine and Slipmatt’s new music company. It’s very exciting for us as it’s really embraced the exciting twists and turns of the modern “digital” music industry. We set up 18 months ago after a music conference in France, where we realised although we was making some pretty big moves with our Ministry of Sound albums as DJ’s, Remixers and Producers. We didn’t actually have a base to work from like I once did with Honey Pot and Matt with Universal. We combined all of our knowledge, all of the music we own and invested lots of time and money in to creating a new home for all the new artists and concepts we were working on. Highlights so far have been the Moondance album being released via New State/EMI. Sound Selektaz mixing Put Your Hands Up 4 for Hard 2 Beat. The launch of The Full Time Superstars who have been charting high with their debut single Waiting for the night and remix of SL 2 – On A Ragga Tip. Working on Jon Doe’s new act 75 Numbers, and establishing new acts such as Rocket Pimp and Pique …. Oh and the launch of Can You Feel It Thursdays!"
" Forthcoming projects include. Tango & Ratty’s mix album (Proper 93 business). Future Hardcore anthems mixed by Himbo, Top Vibe, Little Miss Detonate and Mike Modulate. Future Rave Anthems 2 mixed by DJ Faydz. The re release of Ragga Tip, The Full Time Superstars artist album and we also have artist albums to celebrate my 20 years in the game and Slipmatt’s 21 years in the game to name just a few! Phew!"
Hahahaha! - OUTSTANDING!!!: )
You have been in the scene for a solid set of years now, moving with the times as we all have. From a promoters view point can you tell us what has greatly changed? - Ravers attitude towards events and music etc..?
" I can’t really say from a promoters view point as I only promoted through out the Hard Dance explosion, so couldn’t compare it to the real early days. From a dj’s point of view however, things are a lot less spontaneous now then they used to be. With the arrival of the internet and social networking sites people know what their doing and where their going and who their going with months and months in advance. Parties are just as good as they used to be and even better organised and more professional now, but the whole air of not knowing what’s going to happen next is no longer there. Off course the Music changes and fashion changes, but the concept of loud music and people having a good time expressing them selves to their music of choice in what ever way they see fit, still remains the same! "
From the same stance - but now on a production tip please!? - Would you say it’s easier now than ever before to make a track and get it out there than say in the nineties? - On this level do you still enjoy banging out a track as you did back then, and what major factors have changed!??
" I looooveee making music even more then ever!!! The way music is made has changed radically from when I 1st started in the mid 90’s, and yep I would say it’s much easier for people to be able to make their own tunes. Programmes that put your music in key, compression units that would of cost an arm and leg now available as a downloadable programme. Synths that make amazing sounds costing next to nothing, the list goes on. For £800 you’re on your way these days, 15 years ago a basic studio was 15 grand! That said how ever, you need to come up with the goods and make music that will last forever. Big fat studio or a computer in your bedroom …. It’s all about making good music, and that’s down to the producers, not the equipment! "
On this note - what advice would you give to any up and coming producer / D.J who is trying to break through today?
" The best advice I ever had was given to me by a dj called Gary D who had been on the scene since the late 80’s. It was at a Labrynth/2000 AD event called Desire in 1992 @ Tasco Warehouse when I was 17. I had been playing for Labrynth/2000 AD for 2 years, and I had earned the prestigious last hour which was always given to Adrian Age, it was a massive achievement for me 1) because I had got to that point as it had always been Adrian Age’s spot for 3 years solid, I never thought any one else would be doing it 2) I was at least 5 to 10 years younger then all the early greats who surrounded me on a weekly basis Choci, Roger Johnson, Rat Pack, Vynal Matt, Lloyd Anthony, Kenny Ken, Frankie Valentine, Jumping Jack Frost and here I was doing last hour for what I and thousands of others will always consider London’s number 1 rave party! "
" As the party ended there was 1000’s of people in the warehouse screaming for more not wanting to go home as the sun shone through the warehouse shutters. As I was closing my record box, Gary come up to me and put it in a simple way …. "
" Dan you’ve got what it takes to go all the way, and judging by the way you have reached doing closing set for Labrynth you’ve certainly got the passion for it. Now all you have to do is be able to handle all the let down’s, disappointments, bull shiters, arse holes and high’s & lows that go with being a dj, and your home and dry………. 18 years after he said that to me, headlining countless amount of events, travelling the world, gold disk for mix albums sold, living in a home paid for out of DJ’ing. It’s still the best piece of advice I have been given, and I still use it today …. I’ve got that much passion for this, there’s not a single disappointment, a single arse hole or any low point big enough to ever stop me bringing people the music I love!!! ….. And if some one wants to make it in this game, this is the attitude they need to take … SIMPLE! "
On a hardcore tip - what is at the front of Billy’s C.D wallet at the moment getting maximum SMASHING rights, for the hardcore crew!??;) ;)
" There are so many great hardcore tunes around at the moment! I’m loving Mike Modulate, Himbo ,Little Miss Detonate, Top Vibe, Destiny, Rampant,Pettrucio to name a few …. It’s all about the Nu School of Hardcore for me right now. There’s lot’s of artists who deserve the exposure in hardcore who are shining, and all the above fit that criteria! "
Epidemik has seen you continually step up and play for them! - How long have you been playing for Epidemik, and what is it that keeps you there and sets this apart form other parties around!?
" I think I 1st played for Grant Epidemik about 12 years ago on Clacton Pier, my memory is a bit hazy here. But the secret to Epidemik parties is Grant and his teams hard work and dedication to making it all about the ravers … I know this is a cliché, but Epidemik really is a team of dedicated people who are tireless in making sure the events are nothing short of amazing, and I have witnessed their hard work and dedication countless amount of times over the years! "
Epidemik Capital Shakedown saw you SmAsH it right up with fellow mix master- Twista! - This time round your taking to the hardcore room with London legend: Vibes! ! ! ! - Have you worked with Vibesy before on the decks, and how are you feeling about the set? - Is there any special preparation before hand I.e. a nice pint or so down the pub!?… ;) ;)
" Last time I dj’ayed with Vibes was at Bounce 2 This New Years Day @ Gatecrasher in Birmingham, and it was wicked! Shanes like me he’s up for seeing the party rock, and will enter in the spirit no problem, so with both of us on the decks back 2 back it will be nothing short of carnage! As for the beer, were just planning a mass piss up session as we speak! "
Can you let us into any exclusives that you may be airing on this night for the crew…?! (hoping it’s not TOO top secret…!);)
" You know me mate …. My tunes are top secret for a reason!!! …. If I told ya, they wouldn’t be my top secrets! "
Your time playing at Epidemik you must have seen a fair few funny sites…;) Are there any Epidemik stories that you can share with us today!?? - (please feel free to mention ‘star’ names it makes it all the more fun!!!) : );)
" I reckon the best funnies have to be from the man him self Mr Grant Epidemik! Have you seen him do his mental break dancing when Silver Bullet – 20 seconds to comply comes on? … It’s some thing to behold; it’s a cross between the New Zealand rugby team’s war chant and out of time body popping from the streets of New York in the late 70’s. I can’t make out if he’s a genius or completely of his fucking nut! "
I’m a huge cooking & mixing fan! A classic question: Do you have a favourite food, before or after a gig!??? - A favourite restaurant or fast food place!!?
" Your asking the wrong person to name a favourite, look at the size of me! …. I’m partial to Gouchos steak house in Mill Hill though! Or Rodizo Rico Brazilian in Islington …. Although you can’t beat my favourite Indian East is East round the corner to my house for a classic Vindaloo! "
Lurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrvly!
If I (or any one else) wants to buy you a drink at Area on the 7th - what will it be?
" JD & Coke … Double! "
