This article is about Twisted Audio presents HYBRID (3 hour set) @ Babalou (formerly The Bug Bar) in London, Sat 12 Apr 2008
How did you get together? We have known each other for a few years now, met at some of the big prog nights in London, Bedrock, Sasha nights at Fabric, Renaissance and on the South Coast. Having run our own nights separately we decided to stop competing and pool our talents to form a night that offered quality music with a party atmosphere, something musically different to what is going on in London.
In the run up to the next bi-monthly party at Babalou on April 12th with the mighty Hybrid, Twisted Audio tells us a bit more about progressive house and keeping it underground. Twisted Audio are DJ/promoters Sarah Rodin, Andy Newland and Warren Mooney. Following their success at John Digweeds Easter Bedrock, we caught up with them to find out about Twisted Audio, progressive house in London and their rapid rise onto the London club scene.
Tell us the Twisted Audio story so far? Our first party was in Nov 2006 when we hosted T2 at Turnmills with Omid 16B. Since then we have put on our own parties with Luke Fair, a boat party with Paolo Mojo and the first of our bi-monthly parties at Babalou last Feb with Nick Warren. In between we’ve hosted rooms at the last 3 Bedrock parties as well as continuing our association with Mos, we played with Sasha last year (well in the Baby box anyway). As DJs, we were lucky enough to play in the main room at Turnmills before it closed with SOS and Andy has just come back from Miami (lucky man) where he supported Anthony Pappa on his album launch tour. What are your musical/DJ influences? Sasha and Digweed of course, plus Danny Howells, Nick Warren, Tenaglia, Deep Dish, plus lesser known DJs like Luke Fair, Jim Rivers, Desyn Masiello, Nic Fanciulli, James Zabiela.
Describe the Twisted Audio sound? A combination of underground tech, progressive, house combined with a selection of crowd pleasers, The music aims is to keep the dancefloor packed and take people on a real journey through deep, tech and full on progressive house.
and as DJS, your favourite producers? Dusty Kid, Will Saul, Jim Rivers, Sascha Funke, Afrilounge, Quivver, Nick Muir, Nic Fanciulli, Martin Buttrich, Sebo K the list goes on, some quality music about at the moment. Andy slightly more on the progressive tip Fede Epis, Oliver Moldan, Nick Muir
What can people expect when they come to Twisted Audio? We want to offer something different, an intimate party atmosphere where you can hear quality music ALL NIGHT with a world class headliner that plays for AT LEAST 3 hours, you cant get much better than that!
We merge the real trainspotters with a proper party, imagine all your friends at the best house party with some top quality DJs providing the entertainment. Nick Warren loved it so much in Feb he wants to play for 5 hours next time!
And Babalou as a venue? Babalou is the perfect venue for Twisted Audio it has the underground, intimate feel that we are looking for plus has a real Cross feel about it, candles, leather chairs, low ceilings plenty of places for us oldies to rest our legs. Excellent soundsytem and very friendly bar staff and security. A lot of our crowd are from South of the river. There are not many venues in London where the DJ is standing 2 feet away from you and you can see exactly what they are doing!
Hybrid are playing for you on April 12th, tell us a bit about them? Hybrid are true legends on the progressive house music scene. Hybrid need little introduction in the world of dance music; Mike Truman and Chris Healings have been writing, producing, touring and DJing all over the globe for the best part of a decade and have amassed nearly 250 productions to date. Their big break came back in 1994 when an infamous Hong Kong DJ called Lee Burridge gave a copy of their single 'Symphony' to Sasha, which then went on to be included in his and John Digweed's Northern Exposure compilation.
What kind of DJs can we expect in the future? We have another party at Babalou on June 7th where we will be bringing 2 rising stars on the prog scene to Brixton. Luke Fair, and Jim Rivers, really looking forward to that. Plus we have a very special party planned for May and another one in August so look out for those as they are going to be big!
What is the future for Twisted Audio? Establishing itself as the leading underground night in London for quality house music, be it from full on progressive of Nick Warren to the disco edge tough house of luke fair. After that being able to do nights in other cities, countries & a fully fledged cd series.......
