EXCLUSIVE: Shiva Interview With Will Bailey!!!

This article is about Shiva @ Babalou (formerly The Bug Bar) in London (UK), Sat 23 Aug 2008

Nu-skool electro wizard, Will Bailey, gives us the lowdown on his meteroic rise to fame, his OCD-ness(!) and....being Will Bailey - all ahead of his debut for Shiva at their SW4 afterparty at Babalou. Bank Holidays just got that LITTLE bit better.....

You've now become a bit of a name in this darling industry of ours, at what point did you realise 'you'd made it'?

I wouldn't say I've made it at all, and I think that is what keeps me hungry. There are so many things I still want to do, so many goals I've got to achieve....

What's the best thing about coming from Birmingham?

The fantastic choice of Balti restaurants and, of course, the accent.

What did you do for your last birthday?

I played at the Q Club in Birmingham with Seb Fontaine - it was a wicked night! I even got cake brought up to me on stage!!! *LOL*

So, how young does that make you at the moment?!

I think I'm 27 - either that or 28. I'm really not sure... and that suits me!!

What's the weirdest thing that's ever happened to you in a club?

I had to sign someone's pumps the other night!!

What's the best night out you've ever had?

I think when I played all three rooms at Godskitchen. It was a big step for me going on in the main room after Eric Prydz and D.Ramirez. It was an amazing feeling!!

So, what's your favourite record of all time?

That's such a hard one. If we are talking dance music, then it would be either Masters At Work - 'To Be In Love' or Congress '40 Miles'.

What can't you live without?

Pizza and my studio.

Before you were a DJ, what was the worst job you ever had?

I worked in car insurance. It was painful. I couldn't stand it, but it made me work way harder on my music - so it was a good thing really.

Who or what are your musical influences?

I love Dubfire at the moment for the techno influence, I love Hijack and Fake Blood and that kind of vibe, too. I listen to a lot of old stuff too - Prince, The Police, Reggae, King Tubby, Cyprus Hill. Anything goes...

Is there anything unusual or weird about you that you'd like to share with us?

I've got OCD. I have to check the taps (and everything else) are off before I leave the house! It can be an absolute nightmare.

If you had a time machine, where would you go and why?

I think I'd catch up with Bill and Ted and just do what their doing....

What tunes have lodged themselves in your record box and refuse to leave?

Double 99 - 'Ripgroove' and Nuyorican Soul - 'Runaway'.

Will you be sampling the delights of SW4 in Clapham Common before your set at Shiva?

I think it's on the cards. I may be attending with my man, Jesse James.

And, finally, what can we expect of you ahead of your set at Shiva's Bank Holiday special at Babalou?

Lots of noise. Lots of partying - along with some JD!!

Thanks, Will. We can't wait to get you behind those decks in the Crypt that is Babalou. And, from one northerner to another, let's fookin' 'ave it!!!
