Curiousity Club rocks Babalou 27th March
Friday 27th March saw The Curiousity Club return to Babalou in Brixton, for our second installment of filthy roof-raising house music with a twist of Burlesque entertainment. After the fantastic feedback we'd had from our launch party on 30th January - with so many people getting dressed-up Burlesque style and a dancefloor full of smiling faces loving the dirty electro beats - there seemed to be quite a buzz about the next event! With Curiousity Club we always aim to give our clubbers a unique clubbing experience, with special Burlesque entertainment and theming provided by The Lollipop Lounge....this time round we really went to town with goodie bags for ticket holders, a plethora of freebies, crazy walkabout fancy dress characters and even cheeky signs to pose with.

The night kicked off with a perfectly programmed warm-up set from DJ duo Edd & Leggz dressed up in 1940s style gangster suits & trilbys and with big smiles on their faces. Edd & Leggz were followed by Stefan B taking things up a notch. By this time Babalou was buzzing nicely, with folks making good use of the buy one get one free offer at the bar and opening up their goodie bags (filled with curious treats such as a brand new mix CD from Lizzie Curious, lollipops with 'suck me' stickers on, love heart sweets and bubbles with blow me stickers on)!

With clubbers travelling from all over London, plus a party bus from Cheltenham and three birthday parties all meeting up there was definately a lot of excitement in the air. Babalou is a unique venue - there is something intrinisically wicked about partying in the crypt of an old church! - and perfectly suited to Curiousity Club. With its sumptous velvet booths and moroccan themed decor Babalou sets the scene as a cool hideaway bar ideal for meeting friends. Yet in the space of just a few hours it almost seemlessly transforms into an intimate underground club - complete with lasers, an perfectly positioned DJ booth and phat soundsystem with the alcoves and hideaway areas adding to the heady mix of decadence and debauchery!

It wasn't long before the toe-tapping, head nodding house beats started to take hold and clubbers started to venture towards the dancefloor. An array of fancy-dress characters added some spice to the proceedings: including Darcy Du Vet (the burlesque ballerina) and characters straight out of Alice in Wonderland roaming the club, with signs held aloft proclaiming "Curiousity often leads to trouble" and "Curiouser and Curiousier"!

Next up and resplendent in a wonderfully quirky Burlesque outfit was Select FM/Tribes resident Natalie Parker. As the dancefloor started to fill, Natalie's set of driving, tough house music was perfect for taking things to the next level. As I got ready to take to the decks I spied The Curiousity Club Chicks, wearing quirky little white rabbit hats, carrying cigarette trays filled with 'Eat Me' treats, sweets and more mix CDs, roaming the club. All around were people in fantastic Burlesque-themed outfits from beautiful ladies in corsets, stockings and suspenders to guys rocking out with zoot suits, trilbys and skinny ties.

Then it was my turn to take to the decks and I just have to say: thank you so much - what a crowd you are to play to! There was such an air of fun, good vibes and positivity throughout the club and it was really so fantastic to look out over the dancefloor to see hands in the air as far as the eye could see and big grins on faces. The Curiousity Club Chicks, looking stunning in their all-white Alice in Wonderland inspired outfits, took to the podium for a bit of quirky dancing before hitting the dancefloor to take polaroid pictures of happy souls in the crowd - providing folks with a fun memonto of the night. Cheeky little signs such as Eat Me, Hear Me, Feel Me and even Suck Me (!) made their way around the crowd providing much amusement!

I really should have had a word with the White Rabbit that popped up every now and then, because as time was certainly flying by far too fast - before I knew it my filth-fuelled set was coming to an end.

However there were no tears to be shed because next p was the fantastic, crowd-enthusing duo that is BamCee Project (Chris Cee and Lucy Bam Botang). Both looking supercool in their amazing Burlesque outfits, these two DJs make for an awesome combination behind the decks, with their energy and creativity setting the dancefloor alight! Lucy's scratching and layering of acapellas combined with a mix of wicked tunes, both old and new, with Chris's energy and CDJ trickery made for a really fun and fresh set. I particularly loved hearing their spicy take on "Sweet Dreams" which ensured a roar from the dancefloor!

Finally the enigmatic Li'l Joey treated us to delicously dirty filthy set to close the night on a real high. As Ash Scott was ill and sadly not able to play, it was a real honour to have Li'l Joey come and spin - Joey is regularly seen jetting round the world for his residency with the Stonebridge and Friends tour, so it was a great treat to have him come and grace the Curiousity Club decks!

I really can't thank everyone involved enough for making this night so special! Massive shouts go to The Lollipop Lounge who provided all the fantastic entertainment and theming which plays a massive part in making this night so special. All the DJs who played sets just perfect for the time of night (I'm a real stickler for a night to progress musically)...you rock! Then there is the photographers who take such amazing snaps and really capture the essence of the night - thank you! Also I want to give a big shout out to all the staff at Babalou, who are so supportive in the run up to the event and a pleasure to work with on the night. In fact, the both the bar staff and security have told me they really enjoy working when it's Curiousity Club because our crowd are so happy and friendly. Which brings me on to thank all you party people, with your fantastic friendly, positive, up-for-it attitudes really make the night was it is and...you are SO much fun to play to!

Our next event is 8th May at Babalou - so please feel free to put that date in your diary for another filth-fuelled installment of Curiousity Club - where Burlesque beauty and dirty beats go hand in hand!

For now I will leave you with some genuine feedback quotes I've had from friday night:

"I have to say that Friday night was fantastic! It was great to see so many people dressed up again especially the people who got into the Alice in wonderland theme, the big rabbit was hilarious! As well as the music being great, I thought the whole vibe was wicked with a kind of subversive 1920's 30's feel to it, like loads of people sneaking into a small "Speak easy" during the great depression......quite apt due to the current credit crunch lol!"

"Thanks for a great night, everyone really enjoyed themselves, party bags were a great idea. As usual it was a fantastic atmosphere and lovely people that helped to make it such a fun night.
See you again soon."

"That was one of the best nights I've had in months"

"Been a long time since I have seen a friday night that good.....It's parties like The Curiousity Club that tell me there are still people out there who do it for the love of the music"

"We had so much fun and loved being involved. Have to say it was definately one of the nicest groups of people."

"Friday was an amazing night. Can't wait for the next one!"

"Fantastic night."
