He's KISS FM's dance music guru, he'lll be playing a VERY special '20 Year of House' Kisstory set and his obsession with pizza is so unhealthy that some of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will have trouble sleeping at night. He is Steve Smart and here is a slice of what he gets up to....

We're well into our 20th year of house music now. What is it that makes the scene so special?

The people who go!!

You currently host three of KISS FM’s leading dance shows. What are your three most requested tunes?

Classics wise: Gat Décor – Passion, Faithless – Insomnia and probably anything by The Prodigy

How did you get into house music? And what inspired you to produce/remix your first record?

In 1987/88 I was in middle school, me and my mates were into Public Enemy and the early hip-hop scene, I heard this new track by Marshall Jefferson called ‘Move your body’ and loved it. From then on, I was hooked. I went out after that buying 12 inches by S-Express and A Guy Called Gerald etc… It was so weird because like 10 years later I got to play alongside Marshall at an early Dance Paradise night. Wow!

What's been the proudest moment in your professional life so far?

Achieving what I do on Kiss. We beat everyone on the dial with the Rajar figures - including Radio 1.

Aside of music, what else has been your proudest moment to date?

Proposing to my girlfriend and buying a new house together.

What productions/releases have you got coming up?

Just remixed the new Frankmusik single ‘Better Off As Two’ for Universal/Island records and the remix of a classic by Kristine W for Champion is coming soon!

What did you do for your last birthday and when was your birthday?

6th of March. We went to our local for a meal with the family. Nothing too big as I spend all my weekends in nightclubs!

What's the weirdest thing that's ever happened to you in a club?

I was playing in Prague and after my set some girl came over from the VIP and said something in Czech and handed me a fistful of money. It was her way of thanking me for an excellent set! I tried to give it back but she wouldn’t take it. It paid for my cab back to the airport, though!

Shiva are celebrating 20 Years Of House Music this year, what are your favourite dance records of all time?

I will just say three for now….

Grace – Not Over Yet, Future Sound Of London – Papau New Guinea and A Guy Called Gerald – Voodoo Ray.

What happened the last time you embarrassed yourself?

I try not to.

My other half Kaz.

Before you were a DJ, what was the worst job you'd ever had?

I used to be a boat-builder.

What was the last record you bought?

It was a load of stuff on Beatport. Album-wise, I have just ordered the soundtrack to the film ‘The Business’.

Is there anything unusual or weird about you that you'd like to share with us?

I REALLY love Pizza!

If you had a time machine, where would you go and why?

Back to the 60’s - just for a week or so - to see the music scene evolving, then invent disco music to become a certified legend!!

What tunes have lodged themselves in your record box/CD bag and refuse to leave?

I always carry classics around because you just never know when you might need them.
