This article is about Frantic Presents HHA The 9th Birthday @ Brixton Academy in London (UK), Sat 17 Oct
Adam M has recently been tearing up the filth floors with his fierce unique sound! Adam runs the countries most innovative new filth brand Hi Oktane which has been making some serious noise on the Hard House scene by launching events in London. Hi Oktane London events have been a huge success and are a must for any discerning Filth and NRG fan. We caught up with Adam to find out what makes him tick and why you can’t miss the Convergence vs Hi Oktane Filth Foyer at this years Hard House Academy!
1) How long have you been DJing?
I’ve been Djing now for about 13 years now. It’s been a long journey.
2) What was the first club you went to? What did you think?
My 1st proper clubbing experience was at Passion @ The Emporium in Coalville. I was blown away with sheer the size of the place. The atmosphere that JFK created with the clubbers on the microphone during the night was truly amazing & life changing to me. I was instantly hooked and never missed an event after that.
3) What was the first club you played at?
My 1st gig was at a DJ comp at a club in Stamford called Centrals. TDV was a regular there at the time. I had only been DJing a couple of months so I was very nervous and the place was rammed, about 2000 people packed into a 1500 capacity venue. Once I got behind the decks all the nerves just vanished and I was buzzing like hell. I just went into the zone and the crowd loved every mix, there’s no better feeling than when you drop that new bass line into the mix and the crowd go bezerk. What a great night, I will never forget it!! I’ve got a video tape of it somewhere, I’ll have to try and dig it out at some point haha. I won the comp too so I couldn’t of asked for anything else to kick start my DJing.
4) Are there still marked differences between the harder scene in the North and London?
Yeah there is quite a big difference between the 2 I think. Up north is a lot more like a small family of clubbers. It’s the same people at most of the nights that you go to and every 1 seems to know each other as the scene is a lot smaller than it is in London. The Crowd down south are wicked too. The crowd that we’ve been getting in for the Hi Oktane events are amazing, really friendly and they have made me feel so welcome. I’ve never seen people dance so hard. I nearly got knocked flying a few times at the Glazathon. It’s good to see people getting right into the music, that’s what its all about.
5) If push came to shove what for you has been your favourite event of all time as a) A Clubber
As a Clubber it has to be my 1st Tidy Weekender, TW2. It was all new to every 1 back then and nobody really knew what to expect. Very exiting!
b) A DJ
The 1st time I played b2b with Glazby I think. Back when used to go insomniacz & Sundissential and watched Glazby I used to dream of just being on the same line up 1 day but then to actually play b2b with my idol is deffo my best memory as a DJ so far. Make sure you come along to Westfest at the end of Oct to see me & Paul go b2b in the Frantic & Awsum arena, that’s going to be something else, I really can’t wait!!
6) Why did you start making tracks?
Really it was down to years of handing out mix tapes and not really getting anywhere. All the biggest DJ’s at the time were making there own tracks so I thought it was the best way to get my name out there.
7) Who would you most like to work with in the studio?
I’ve been lucky enough to work with some of the best in the biz so far like Dom Sweeton, Paul Maddox & Dave Owens but it is my goal to spend a few days in the Studio with Captain Tinrib. I think his stuff is ground breaking and sounds completely different to anything out there. A true Pioneer of the scene!
8) HHA is three magical letters. Can you think of 3 other magic letters?
H.O.L. = (Hi Oktane London) Taking my event down to London has been a really big step for me. The crowd we got down at Hidden for the 1st 2 events have been something else. Such a wicked atmosphere both times and they have made it feel like the event has been there for years. I’m really looking forward to Co-hosting the Filth Foyer at this year’s HHA Birthday. Hopefully some fresh faces will get to see what Hi Oktane is all about ;-)
9) When you are not playing music what do you get up to?
I work all week for Red Management looking after the artists Diaries and PR. That takes up a lot of my time tbf but when I’m not doing that I spend my free time with my girlfriend JoJo and friends up in Leeds.
10) Coldplay or Jay Z?
Jay Z definitely, Gangster!!
11) Electro or Dubstep?
Blimey, I’m not really into either but if I had to pick 1 I’d go for Dubstep purely for its dirty beats and basslines!
12) You are making Dinner, what is on the menu?
Definitely Fish. I love Mediterranean style cooking. I grew up in Cyprus for the 1st 8 years of my life and all we used to eat was fish, Muscles, King prawns etc… I was a Chef when I left school for 3 years too so I love cooking, I try to cook dinner every night. I really hate TV dinners, they don’t taste of anything.
ADAM M EXCLUSIVE HHA9 MIX:
13) What can we expect from your set at HHA?
I’ve been very busy in the studio over the last few weeks. I’ve done a few new bootleg bits with a good friend of mine called Joe Lee. They will be getting there 1st airing on the night too so the set will be very upfront. I’m really exited about the stuff I’ve been doing recently in the studio so I hope they will go down well on the night.
14) Who else are you going to check out at HHA?
I’m keen to see Phil Reynolds set. I haven’t seen him play for years now. He was 1 of my favourite dj’s from back when I 1st started clubbing at Frantic when he was the main resident. I’m obviously really looking forward to Glazby & Farley’s b2b. You always know you’re in for a treat when those 2 get together. Fierce stuff!!
15) Why Hard House?
It’s the best music in the world! I just love the energy and atmosphere you get at some of the big events like HHA or Tidy Weekenders. The clubbers are the friendliest too, every1 is just there for the music and to have fun. At the end of the day that’s what it’s all about. Nothing else!
