This article is about Frantic Presents HHA The 9th Birthday @ Brixton Academy in London (UK), Sat 17 Oct
Well Beanie, to say you’ve been busy since your last interview was posted would be an understatement! There was a lot of good feedback about our last piece, so I thought people would enjoy a follow-up before your up-coming 100% vinyl set in the Black Gold Room at Hard House Academy on 17th October 2009.
It has been busy! I'm getting many steady bookings now and some of them have been huge! For example, the Frantic 12 after-party, Twist and a peak-time set at the Raindance 20th Birthday celebrations, which I was so honoured to be a part of! Raindance is an event that is very close to my heart.
....seeing as you mention Raindance, did a little bird tell me about a recently acquired residency.....?
That’s right, I have my first residency! And for the Mad Hatters Hard House @ Raindance, no less! I'm incredibly excited about this, and I’m going back-to-back with my fellow resident, Double G, at HHA. Double G is a great DJ and I'm very much looking forward to our set together. I can't wait to get on the vinyl (it’s been a while!); I'll be dusting off some of my classics especially for this!
....so from a complete unknown in August 2008, to playing set at Brixton Academy in only slightly more than a year! That is certainly an achievement to be proud of!
Thank you; I have a very long way to go, with lots still to learn, and I continue to work hard. I still can't believe that I've accomplished all I have and am now playing at legendary venues such as Brixton Academy in such a short space of time.
....since our last interview you have really spread your wings; you had your first booking outside London at Brighton’s Insurgence B2B with Miss Nasty...
Our road trip to Brighton was loads of fun! Therapy (for the hard dance society) is a great promotion which has come on so much in the last few months....if you haven’t already then I suggest you check it out, it’s always a great night! In Brighton we played a filth set and it went down a storm! I’ve really got stuck into the filth recently; I got asked to do a guest mix for Raw Power Radio back in August. I had a blast making it and I would really love to play some more filth sets in the future. If anyone fancies checking it out, it’s now available for download!
Indeed it is, there is a download link included at the end of this article along with other handy links to places where people can keep up with you and download your previous mixes!
...As well as playing behind decks in clubs, you are also involved in other projects such as production...
Correct; I have indeed been dipping my toe in the production pool! I once again teamed up with Rob O.T.T to remix one of my all time favourite tunes from the early 90's , “Trip to the Moon” - Acen. I've wanted this tune to be remixed for a long time, and I’m so satisfied that I finally got the opportunity to do it. It’s called 'Beanie's Trip' and is a very light, happy and slightly bouncy tune, great for a warm up set!
On a more personal note; many people, including myself, have wondered about the origins of your DJ name “Beanie”. A few people have suggested it is to do with headwear, which I personally think is unlikely. So come on, enlighten us!
*Laughs* Well it’s definitely not to do with headwear! I don't think I'd look good in one of those hats! Besides, it would cover up my lovely new red hairdo! The story is that, many moons ago, I taught my friend Charlotte how to mix and the plan was to become a duo. I thought of the name Jelly 'N' Beanie, coz you know how much clubbers like sweets! Charlotte had moved on to pastures new by the time I entered the HDS competition, but I really liked the name so I kept it!
....and finally....where can we see you in the future?
You can catch me at Raindance on 28th November, Twist on New Year’s Eve and at the Raindance Slightly Early Valentines Ball in 2010. I am also planning to release a brand new promo mix in time for New Year, so keep your eyes peeled for further details of this!
