This article is about Jnr's Jamm @ Brixton Jamm in London (UK), Fri 28 Jul 2006
So you’re playing Jnr’s Jamm. Tell us about yourself and what we can expect.
My names Luke Dzierzek. I am a DJ / Producer / Musician from Kent with an unpronounceable surname. I made a record called “Echo” last year on Silver Planet which pretty much launched my DJing career. You can expect to hear some crazy filthy electro with some sick grooves and big basslines. My surname is Polish – it came from my Granddad when he moved to the UK from Poland after WW2. You pronounce it “Der-Zek”.
You grew up listening to Digweed, now you've played Bedrock and the likes of Sasha and Zabiela rate you…
Digweed was one of the many I listened to while growing up. My very early influences came from people like Jimi Hendrix and Cream but from a dance perspective the foundation was listening to the many GU compilations and early mixtapes of Sasha etc. The Bedrock gigs have been pretty cool and its been nice to introduce my sound. Sasha and Zabiela have been big supporters – and it’s an unreal feeling knowing they are playing them around the world. Sasha was the first DJ I ever witnessed play a record of mine in a club at the Hi-Fi Brixton Academy afterparty to 4000 people. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life and made me realise that “this is what I want to do”. Meeting Zabiela was great. I played with him on New Years Day at the River Bar in Maidstone and it was a great opportunity for me to thank him for supporting my records and give him some new tracks by hand instead of sending them via AIM.
A lot of DJs rave about Brazil and you’ve just been there you lucky bugger…
Brazil was AMAZING! I was only out for a week but the gigs were sick and the feedback has been brilliant. I’m actually going back for two/three week tour in November and can’t wait!! Brazil is very special because of the people, the different places and the developing electro/house/minimal scene. One of my favourite gigs was in a city called Belo Horizonte. The clubbers are just crazy and party til the bitter end. Oh and the women are unbelievable ;-)
Any other stand-out gigs?
Most memorable has to be Ambassada Gavoli in Slovenia with Cirez D to 2000 people – this was one of my first big club gigs outside of the UK. I ended up playing till 10am and the club was still rammed!! Most weird has got to be playing a huge event in the middle of a forest totally randomly. I played when the sun was coming up and it was pretty surreal. I had to mix on the worst CD decks on a broken table that wobbled. But for me this was pure and raw to the core DJing!
Talking of random, you released the Wrongens & Randoms EP - so what's the worst you’ve seen?
It’s all about the Wrongens & Randoms! The messiest I’ve encountered is someone running full speed into a wall in a club then having an argument with the thing afterwards!
Do you know what to expect at Jamm? I hope you’ll be bringing Jnr some birthday jam!
I’m really looking forward to playing Friday and meeting everyone. I’ve heard great things but I haven’t a clue what I’ve let myself in for, hmmm let the shenanigans begin! My favourite flavour of Jam is Blueberry! Ha ha! I might have to bring some of my Nan’s very special home made for Jnr!!
