This article is about Brixton Jamm in London (UK)
Super Milkmen are made up of beatboxer, DJ and producer, Diqwon Le Chef and DJ, producer and sound engineer Ghostmen. Both with a proven track record in their own rights, Diqwon and Ghost met in 2008 and are now at work in the studio creating beats to fill the floors aswell as refining their live show for life on the road.
Live, the Super Milkmen mix up decks, midi controllers, laptops and beatbox to create something for the crowd to get wild to. Taking old, new, commercial, underground, electro, hip-hop, DnB and anything else they can throw in for good measure, you cannot help to find yourself dancing, waving your arms, stamping your feet and shaking your ass. In the studio the Super Milkmen create funky, soulful,electro/house and DnB vibes with tones of the early french house scene.
Carrying on with their seemingly unstoppable storming off the music scene, the Super Milkmen will be joining the likes of DJ Yoda and Beardyman at the upcoming launch of new London night, BOOM! at Brixton Jamm on the 4th July. Definitely not one to be missed....
So Diqwon and Ghost you are both artists in your own right, undertaking beatboxing, DJing and production on your own, so how did you both first meet and at what point did you start working together?
Myself and Ghost met through DJ Go from the Mixologists and after working together on an unrelated project decided to try out working on a track together, shit really worked and we found that with Ghosts DnB background and my house background we could create something interesting that combined the two… from there Super Milkmen was born.
And, of course, where did the name come from?
Ghost mentioned to me that there was a T-Shirt that came out in Japan that just said “Super Milkmen” for no particular reason across the front. Straight away we decided it would make a dope name and that was that.
You’ve only been playing together since 2008 but things seem to be moving pretty fast for you, where was your first gig together and how are you finding the reaction to your music so far?
Stuff is really kicking off for us, which is damn exciting, our first show together was in Asia in Taipei which was amazing as we had this crowd which reacted like we were legends when actually it was our debut. Its been a bit of a dream so far with the reaction, 2 number one’s on Hype Machine and now we are working with Killa Kela, Bashy, Alan Braxe and Breed.
Working as a duo, how does your production style differ from that of a solo artist? Do you find it can be a hindrance having to please two people with every decision?
Its definitely not easy, I have ways I wanna do things and Ghost has ways he wants to do things but overall its nothing but positive. There are so many genres of music that come together to form a new genre and with two people in the studio it just makes it that much more exciting cos two minds come together to create this one track, one sound that one mind would never have created.
You perform live, which seems to be the way most DJs are going now, do you find it causes more problems when playing gigs or does it allow much more freedom to experiment and work a room?
Working live definitely expands the options but it also means more prep work it’s a lot harder because you have more choice and a lot more outcomes.. if that makes sense. Rather than just bringing a bag of records and seeing where the night goes. With us using Ableton and going for the live touch we can also really mix and mash-up genres which is what its all about. Why cant hip-hop, house, jungle and an 80’s tracks be played in the same set in a real mashup crowd pleasing way.
Your musical style takes in many different genres, but if you have to put yourselves in a nutshell what would you say?
Wow that’s a pretty hard call, I would just say we are “jump up bassline electro with a twist” LOL
Which other artists in your field do you gain influence from and who would you love to play alongside?
We have great respect from a number of artists, Jack Beats, Ac Slater, Dillinja and Bryan G to name but a few and regarding playing alongside, for us its about the crowd and the feeling, not the person your on the line-up with. You could be playing with the most unknown DJ in the world but the crowd could be the best, liveliest, craziest crowd you have ever played in front of, and that’s what makes it memorable
Have you met many other artists along the way who have been less than friendly?
We have found some haters out there, but maybe its just because we are getting were we are at this speed, but all we care about is the love we are getting… its all about the L.O.V.E.
You are playing alongside massive artists such as Yoda and Beardyman at the launch of Boom in Brixton next month, what can the crowd expect to hear from your set?
We are gonna really try and bring the elements of the night into the set, incorporating the legendary beat-boxer Killa Kela , mashing up classic hip-hop tracks with dubstep and dutty basslines but bringing it in an ass shaking, hand waving, raving not behaving, pill munching, floor licking, eye rolling, porn loving, money shot kind of way…. Just be prepared cos its definitely gonna be an experience.
What else is on the cards for you this summer? Do you have any festival/Ibiza dates at all?
This summer is looking crazy for us, touring for 4 weeks in Asia including headlining a festival called ‘Lost Lagoon’, releasing an EP on Itunes in September and closing the Summer with Ibiza and an EP promo Tour around Europe. Keep an eye on our MySpace… www.myspace.com/supermilkmen cos shows are coming thick and fast.
