Chad Jackson started behind the decks before it was even trendy to be a DJ, and today can be credited as one of the people that popularised the art of DJ mixing around the world. It’s fair and right to call him one of the first ever globally known superstar DJs.
Back in the late 80's, a flyer with his name on it meant queues outside clubs like Legends in Manchester and the infamous Wigan Pier. The thing that made Chad stand out was that he was one, if not the, first British DJs to start DJ mixing.
His regular live and recorded mixes on Manchester’s Piccadilly/Key 103 radio station had the whole of the North West of Britain on stand-by with their fingers on the record button, with people still clamouring to this day for copies of those early mixes - with multitudinous copies of these mix-tapes finding their way to the south, London and worldwide.
This soon led to Chad being a man very much in demand. He was headhunted by M-People’s Mike Pickering who, as manager of Manchester’s legendary Hacienda, asked Chad to become resident. Many heady nights ensued as Chad introduced the crowds to the newly emerging house music sound.
In 1987 he showed just how good his mixing abilities were by becoming the Technics/DMC World DJ Mixing Champion at the Royal Albert Hall in London, having secured the UK title a year before. This success led to a world tour, including stop-offs in New York to become the first European competitor in the Battle For World Supremacy at New York’s New Music Seminar - which led in turn to invitations for him to feature on Public Enemy’s ‘It Takes A Nation of Millions...’ album, and contributions to Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince’s ‘He’s The DJ…’ album, amongst others.
By 1990 Chad’s focus had turned to studio production, remixing the likes of De La Soul, Norman Cook’s Beats International, Run DMC, and Mantronix.
His first solo work was soon to follow and it featured a smorgasbord of samples as diverse as his own tastes in music. Public Enemy’s Chuck D, Marva Whitney and The O-Jays were amongst the ingredients that propelled Chad Jackson’s ... ’Hear The Drummer Get Wicked’ straight to the top of charts around the world, to No.2 in the UK National Chart and the obligatory... ‘Tops Of The Pops’ appearance.
As the nineties progressed, Chad continued to travel extensively, armed only with a record box, a passport and a toothbrush. Gigs in countries as diverse as Russia, Japan and Brazil, The Cannes Film Festival and an MTV Christmas Party helped decorate a period which was otherwise consumed by the creation of his Inner World recording studio - in which numerous productions and remixes, and the pursuit of excellence in music technology took place.
When MP3 arrived, Chad saw the possibility of a long-lingering death for his beloved vinyl record collection, which to this day is probably one of the largest collections in the world. Ministry Of Sound also saw that possibility, and together they toured the major Universities of the UK, performing perhaps the first ever MP3-based computer DJ mixing demonstrations, in workshops designed to promote the arrival of digital mixing. This gave Chad a taste for the rewards of education, which has led to his current position as a ... Tutor of Music Production, MIT & History of Music at the acclaimed Guildford Academy Of Contemporary Music.
Still as present in the studio as ever, Chad continues remixing and producing with a passion. Constantly on the cusp of his eclectic musical tastes, he has received much success with his recent releases in a nu-breaks style on Acetate Records. He is currently working on a joint project, Group Therapy, with old friend ... DJ Dave Seaman (Brothers In Rhythm).
Chad's set's are nothing short of EPIC, he's still one of the main players in our industry, Dj'ing, Writing, Teaching & Remixing!
A UK legend!
