This article is about DOPAMINE @ Brixton Telegraph in London (UK), Sat 29 Sep 2007
Darren , you have been involved with music industry for over a decade is there any one thing that changed beyond recognition in that time ?
The way we play and listen to music I guess is the biggest thing. The intrduction of MP3's and CDJ's have had a major impact from a DJ perspective
Do you think clubbing has lost its shine a bit a lot of parties seem less busy than they were a year ago and what do you thinks going on with the club scene in general?
I think there are a number of factors that have had an effect he main 3 being more festivals and weekenders, more and more of us going abroad more regularly and being honest alot of parties just being crap. Not always the promoter's or clubs fault but sometimes a combination of both. Compared to promoters of years gone by we have it easy now an instead of doing even more work in general we do less. The promoters that promote like how it used to be done alongside the extra technology we have available are the ones who have the best events year in year out
What made you want to get on the decks in the first place ?
I was an old skool junglist so for me Andy C , Randall, Nicky Blackmarket and Hype were the main reason for me starting on the dj'ing side. Most people don't know this but I dont actually own a pair of decks and haven't since 2002. Also I stopped dj'ing around that time to take time out to study the ins and outs of our scene now. I picked up my headphones again in 2004 with a career path set-up and lots of entities I could create like The Baldeelox brand.
Being a frequent flyer to the states how do you find the clubbing scene over the water and are there any major differences?
Wow! I don't know about frequent flyer , outside of Miami this is the first time I have been to New york in 20 years. It really depends on where in the states you go but I think in general they have better looking clubs than ours and the crowds seem to be less inhibited and more into the music than we are...the party I am playing at Philly this weekend is a perfect illustration of that.
If you could change one thing about clubbing in general what would it be ?
Smoking ban in nightlubs. Gives clubs the choice to decide for themselves.
whats the next big thing on the dancefloor ?
Hard to say as there is soooo much choice nowadays. Tone Control and Jordan Rivera are quite hot at the mo but again hard or me to say.
Any Releases from baldeelox in the pipeline ? Shouts etc ?
Baldeelox has 3 new projects in the pipeline, A saxophone E.P a project with FAADA and The Minimum Wage E.P which will premier for the Miami conference trip.
