This article is about BBE 10th Anniversay Party @ Canvas in London (UK), Sat 30 Sep 2006

In advance of them spinning together @ BBE's 10th Anniversary Party DJ Spin Doctor fired a few questions over to one of the world's finest DJs Philladelpia's own DJ Jazzy Jeff.

Check out the interview here and don't forget you can get your tickets to hear Jazzy Jeff, Dimitri From Paris, Gilles Peterson, Norman Jay & more @ Canvas on 30th September through www.bbemusic.com

Spin Doctor: When did you first realise music was going to be your chosen path in life?
Jazzy Jeff: I fell in love with music around 10, that's when I said I wanna do this but it was when I was 16 that I decided to go for it for real.

SD: Can you remember the first records you bought?
JJ: I can't remember the 1st cause I used to get lunch money everyday and I would take it and buy records, that's how my collection got so big so early.

SD: Can you remember your first public gig & how did it go?
JJ: I did a block party in West Philly and all of the other dj's had the night off so they all came. It was great cause that was a big debut.

SD: As a native of Philadelphia what influence has the city's soulful musical heritage had on you and your career?
JJ: It was incredible to grow up with Gamble & Huff in Philly. We heard all of the new song before everybody, it definitley was my musical roots.

SD: There are also several Hip-Hop & Soul artists (The Roots, DJ Cash Money, Gill Scott etc etc) to have blossomed from the city. What is it do you think that has fueled this creative energy of the city?
JJ: I think u can find great talent in any major city, it just needs the chance but the talent in the city bouncin off each other definitley helps

SD: How do you feel about the state of Hip-Hop & dance music in general these days?
JJ: I love the fact that people are being more creative these days. I just wish the mass media played more variety than they do.

SD: Is there anyone you have on a wish list of artists you would like to work with? If so who?
JJ: KRS One and Sting.

SD: As both a successful DJ & producer how do you generally split your time between touring & the studio? Do you find one inspires the other?
JJ: This is hard but I love it, I love both equally but its hard 2 split them but djing inspires it all.

SD: You still tour as Will Smith's DJ. How do these shows differ from when you are traveling to DJ club gigs on your own?
JJ: Haha...the production is way bigger with will.

SD: Does he have any plans to get you into his movies?
JJ: I will never say never...but not right now.

SD: What effect do you feel the digital revolution (Serato, I-Tunes etc) is having on DJing & clubbing?
JJ: Makes it easy to carry music. As long as it don't sacrifice the integrity of djing.

SD: When did you first become aware of BBE?
JJ: From the dope compilation they would put out then Kenny Dope put me really up on them.

SD: As the label is celebrating it's 10th Anniversary what do you feel is the key to their success?
JJ: Real music from real people.. Pete is a dj so its not coming from someone who has no musical knowledge.

SD: Your album "The Magnificent" is with out a doubt one of my favorite BBE releases but what are favorite releases on the label?
JJ: J-Dilla’s Welcome To Detroit...my favorite...Foreign Exchange...too many!

SD: You come to London to spin @ the Anniversary party. What can we expect to hear from you?
JJ: Everything I can squeeze into the hour set I’m given.

SD: You have another Hip-Hop Forever mixtape & a new album coming out on BBE soon. What can we expect from these?
JJ: More of the same from me really. I enjoy these & am thankful to the people who enjoy me.

SD: Thanks for taking the time to answer these. We look forward to hearing you do your thing when over for the Anniversary Party!!!!
JJ: No doubt....
