SHIVA Interview With Liam D!!!

This article is about Shiva @ Canvas in London (UK), Sat 21 Jul 2007

Liam Daley may not be a household name, but he IS one of London's hardest working promoters, as well as being an extremely popular DJ! He has played for the likes of Plush Dafunk, Immaculate Touch, Kinky Malinki and Pushca to name a few. Playing at the likes of Space, Amnesia and Pacha, as well as promoting three of his own nights (Juicy, H&S and Shiva). He really is a one-man machine. We caught up with him to see what makes him tick....

What did you do to celebrate your last birthday?

I don't think I did celebrate! Oh, actually, it was a working birthday with DJing at the White House on the Thursday and Plush Dafunk at Pacha on the Saturday.

And when was that?

Back in April.

And how old does that make you?

God, your nosey! 32. Getting on a bit now!

Before you were a DJ, what was the worst job you had?

I worked at a grocery shop, after school, for two weeks when I was 14. The pay was £1.36 a hour and I had to lift shit loads of potatoes up a staircase on a regular basis. I asked for a Saturday off to go Margate with my mates, but they wouldn't give me day off - so I just phoned in sick and then resigned on the next day! £1.36? I thought slavery was abolished!

When was the last time you treated yourself?

I treated myself to a brand new car. I’ve been driving A to B cars all my life, so to get a brand new one with only 12 miles on the clock has put enjoyment into my driving! Plus, to have air con for the first time makes all the difference on a hot day!

Why did you get into promoting and how long have you been doing it?

I fell into promoting without realising it! I got the old "You can play but bring as many friends you can". It happened with most slots and I ending up thinking "If I’m going to promote, I may as well run my own nights!" So I've been promoting for around 5 years now.

What's your favourite tune of all time?

There are too many to choose from. But If I was to say one, it would be Rhythm On The Loose - Break of Dawn. That was when I first got into clubbing and it brings back some fond memories.

What's the best gig you've ever had?

I would probably say playing at Cream's opening party at Amnesia in Ibiza. I remember walking into the terrace and saying to the owner "If this is the main room which room am I playing in?" He looked at me like I was stupid and replied "this is the room." It was an unbelievable size and to play in front of a packed terrace was an amazing feeling.

What's the worst gig you've ever had?

A mate's birthday, a while back. I'm not a sexist but never let a woman organise a sound system! I asked her for Technics and she assured me it was all taken care of. I then got a Technics record player with 2 speeds only: 33 & 45 BPM ! Let's just say it wasn’t one of my best mixing nights!

Why do you support Chelsea when we all know, especially me, that Man United are the best team in the Premiership?

Let's not go down that road. But before we move to the next question, I must state we did have our key players injured most of the season. But when we both met each other with fully fit teams in the FA Cup Final - we won!

Hmmm. Now, what was the last record you bought?

Dave Guetta - Love Is Gone.

A little birdy tells me that whilst you were in Ibiza this year at Space, whilst everyone was 'havin' it' inside, you were nipping out for a McDonald's and a KFC?!

Erm, I plead guilty your honour! But you only heard half the story! I had a gig at Judgement Sunday at Eden that night, so I needed to keep myself together! Partying from midday to my set at 2am. That's 14 hours later, so I think I was being sensible!

Were you hungry or just one very, sad individual?

Both! It was a Maccy D's and a KFC all rolled into one so I had the best of both worlds! How sad do I sound?

If you had a time machine, where would you go and why?

Does this time machine also give you powers? If so, I would go back to 2002-3, when Tony Blair was debating over going into Iraq! I would then claim that I had been sent from the future to save our governments dreadful mistakes, hypnotise him into thinking otherwise and concentrate on the National Health Service rather then sucking up to America!

When was the last time you embarrassed yourself?

I went to a petrol garage a while back and was a bit of deep in thought, when I saw this bloke from the corner of my eye open the door to my so-called car whilst I was paying at the till. I then dropped my money and legged it towards my car to confront him. As I got nearer, I realised my car was parallel to his! He had everything the same apart from the registration! Quite a few people saw me panic and I did feel like a muppet!

What can't you live without?

Music, Chelsea and the fairer sex!

How's the Weight Watchers plan going? Or are you on the Slim Fast now?

Any more questions like that you may find my punches are as heavy as my weight!

What tunes have lodged themselves in your record box and refuse to leave?

"Backfired" by Masters of Work. A timeless classic. Any tracks from Soul Avengerz like "Love You Feel" & "G Minor". The last two tunes are what funky house is all about. But the old classics like Alison Limerick - "Where Love Lives" and "Break For Love" by Raze always have a place in my heart. They were the tunes that got me into House in the early nineties. Don't play them as much now, but I do throw the odd one in every now and again.

And finally, tell us something about Liam Daley we don't know?

I use to do breakdance when I was a kid! I was pretty good with the helicopter, caterpillar and the back and head spins! If I tried it now, I’d probably break my neck!

Haha! Nice one, Liam. We look forward to Saturday....
