Air @ Cargo - Saturday 3rd November 2007

Ali B
Over the last decade Ali B has held down residencies at two of London’s most influential clubs; The Blue Note and Fabric. He spent his teens working at the Acid Jazz label and then as a DJ, went on to host a weekly radio show on Capital FM for five years. Alongside compilations for Fabric, Y4K and his own Air Recordings label, Ali’s artist productions, including his recent track with The Jungle Brothers, and remixes for the likes of Positiva, Multiply, Sony and Cheeky, have taken him, and his sound to an international audience.

Bastila (Live)
Think of the Specials at their bleakest, meets Stone Roses at their trippiest and you’ll be some way to discovering the essence of this 5-piece band from the Isle of Wight. Bastila were rated as one of the top ten things not to miss at the Isle of White Festival earlier this year and they were also invited by the BBC to play on their Introducing stage at Bestival alongside the likes of The Wombats, Jack Penate and Robots in Disguise. With support coming thick and fast from the likes of XFM and Rob Da Bank at Radio 1, they’ve quite literally got A&R men up and down the country reaching for their cheque books. Come and see what all the fuss is about for yourself this month at Cargo where Bastila will be bringing together their eclectic mix of ska, guitars and two tone.

Diverted (Live)
At Diverted’s core are Stephen Baxter and Lee Richardson. Their last release for Air Recordings, ‘Annihilating Rhythms’ (originally featured on Ali B’s Air Breaks album) and ‘Fing, gained them huge support amongst scene leaders and their follow up is eagerly awaited. The lush down-tempo ‘Summer Hiding’ and the club bruiser ‘Frederick’, which is already being heavily supported by The Plump DJs, will be out on Air Recordings soon. After wowing crowds with their live performance, Diverted have taken up a monthly residency at air as our new house band. Catch them live at Cargo and see why so many are heralding them as the future of electronica.

Janette Slack
In a very short space of time, Janette Slack has established herself as one of the hottest artists around. Her sound is rooted in electro, house and breaks which she delivers with an infectious energy. She mastered her native Hong Kong with residencies throughout 20002001, took on gigs across the rest of the world, and is now based in London. Her debut release on Air Recordings (‘Shake & Play’/ ‘Red Ramona’) caused quite a stir amongst tastemakers when it was released earlier this year.

Mr No Hands
Every now and again an artist like Mr No Hands comes along breathing fresh air into proceedings with an unconventional approach to production and DJing. He is fast emerging as a creative force to be reckoned with through his ever popular video series which have accompanied his last few releases and seen his creative vision compared to the likes of Mr Scruff and Lemon Jelly.. He likes to make songs that go Pow! and Whop! He has released 4 of these so far on Diverted Traffic. His latest remix of Nuboy ‘Cnut’ is being widely hailed as one of the remixes of the year with early support coming from Ali B, Tayo and The Stanton Warriors. Keep your eyes peeled for his forthcoming video label, No Handed Music.
