In the DISKO BASEMENT:
TIMO GARCIA In the last 12 months Timo Garcia's DJ and production career has started to make big noise around the world. Recent studio collaborations such as 'Discotech' (Essential New Tune - Radio 1), 'The Drop' (licensed to this summer's Bora Bora compilation), 'Just Get Over It' (licensed to Tall Paul's latest compilation) and the Squeal EP (given a Money Shot 5/5 review in DJ mag) have been causing a stir amongst the top flight DJs, not to mention remixing Coldcut and high profile gigs around the globe taking in tours to Russia, Belarus, America, South Africa, India, Denmark, France and the UK. With upcoming release on CR2 and Toolroom, next year looks even busier.
CHESHIRE CATZ The first two releases on their new label FAKT, Wide Awake and the dubiously named Ringshifter, have gained the duo props from pretty much everyone - Sasha to Claude von Stroke, Tim Sheridan to Tom Middleton, Sebastien Leger to Funk D'Void, Nic Fancuilli to Steve Lawler, James Zabiela to Ralph Lawson, Gabriel & Dresden to Justin Robertson and all points in-between. And then there's the tracks on Berwick with Timo - 'The Drop' and 'Squeal', the recent remix of Coldcut, the tours of France, Canada and Denmark, plus their London history as the founders of "the Cheshire Street Sessions", a regular house party that eventually ended up bigger than most clubs, and co-promoters of the 'At Night' warehouse parties... Expect, as they call it, Wonkytech - influences from techno, house, minimal and electro, delivered in home-grown London party style.
DAVE iO To help out in the disko basement, we've enlisted one of our fave Djs in Dave iO to do the 12 - 2 slot. Dave iO is one part of production duo insignificant Others and head honcho of iO Music label with releases and remixes from Trentmoller and Paul Woolford. Not forgetting the massive ‘Me and Silver T’ single released on the so-hot-it-hurts Playtime label.
JOZIF As well as holding down residencies at 2 of London's coolest parties - Jaded and Wrong - Jozif's new productions caught the ears of Mike Monday who has asked him to remix one of his 'Smorgasbord' album tracks, as well as writing the music for the malibu soundclash adverts. He's another of the Catz new favourite DJ/producers and so we asked him to play. Simple as that really.
2PHUNKED UP Getting the party started downstairs we we have 2 Phunked Up – The Duo of Daftness. Here's what they have to say for themselves...! "2 South African imports hailing from the infamous city of Johannesburg, usually home and birth place of killers, robbers and general violent and corrupt on goings... Or so the news might have you believe... It's actually blown way out of proportion, just think Brixton on a Saturday night, where the locals carry plumbing that has been re-worked by the dudes at Pimp My Weapon... Anyway, point is these two chaps came overseas looking for their own piece of the musical pie (One of them eating more than the other it looks like) and are steadily cutting a portion for themselves and being talked about as "one of the hottest young house duo's in the capital"...
And upstairs in the bar providing funk, soul, disco and NYE party music:
Bootsie is one of the Mastercuts compilation compilers and the best in the business at eclectic party sets.
JD Birch from Akashic records is renowned for his sublime mix compilations and eclectic sets which span the whole soul/funk/disco/party spectrum.
Paul Barkworth: As promoter of Smokey Beats, which began as a cheeky party in London's East End has enjoyed residencies at The Cross with Renaissance for over three years, Home, (Sydney), Turnmills, 93 feet east, 333 and The Key. This night's been doing eclectic since way before it became music policy for some of the club nights you see today, catering for everyone from the b-boys to electro geeks. Paul will be doing a soul, funk, disco and party set just for us on nye.
Fluency will be closing the upstairs bar for us. They've played all over - Picadilly to Poland, Egham to Egypt, Islington to Israel - and are experts at reading the crowd and rocking the club - with a fine blend of disco, electro, breaks and party music.
