For the Kauz: Interview ahead of Requiem on 26th July @ 414

This article is about Requiem 3 - FlashPoint 5th Birthday Tour @ Club 414 in London (UK), Sat 26 Jul 2008

Flashpoint and Tripoli Trax new night Requiem touches down for the third installment at the 414 on 26th July. Ahead of the party I caught up with Kauz.

So how long have you been djing and producing Rick?

Well I’ve been Dj’ing for around ten years, and producing for two.

Having a artist name that isn’t your real name seemed to become really uncool for a while but I see more and more emerging (whew!). Where did the name Kauz come from – you have quite an interesting ‘real’ name – ever been tempted to use that?

The name Kauz is just another way of spelling "cause", it actually came form the film Revolver, when Jason Statham mentioned a plan of action in a game of chess called Cause and Effect. At the time i was dj’ing as part of a duo so i chose the Kauz part of the name, Ha ha you're the first person that said my real name is interesting, never been tempted to use it though.

You have also worked with Tekneak under another interesting name “Lo Pan” – with your “Power Kicks” tune signed to Delete the Weak. Tell me about the inspiration for the alias and how you guys got working together?

Yeah that all stemmed from one of mine and Ben’s favourite films 'Big Trouble in Little China'. In which there is an evil magician called Lo-Pan, that name came up and we decided to stick with it for a name for producing tracks together, me and Ben live in the same town and have been mates for a while so when the topic came up for making a track we jumped at the idea and that’s how we came to work on our Lo-Pan project.

You’ve worked with Dave Owens, Tim DNG and Riggsy as engineers – what are your studio plans for the rest of the year and are there any tunes in the pipeline we can look forward to?

I’m hoping to go in the studio with Dom, Frank & Dave a few more times this year, got a studio session coming with Tim DNG too which I’m looking forward to, There’s plenty of stuff in the pipeline got a EP coming out on Hammerheads which I'm looking forward to, a track called 'Redemption', also a track called 'Master Blaster' which is a collab with me and Tom Basquil, Just completed a track with Northern Xposure which I’m really happy with, Plenty more to come though!

Which producers do you feel are on fire in the hard house scene right now?

There are a lot of producers in the scene which I think are on fire at the moment, this speaks volumes for our scene but if i had to narrow it down it would be the like of: Dom Sweeten, Frank Farrell, Dave Owens, Marc Johnson, Paul Glazby, James Nardi, Nik Denton, Karim, Adam M, Tom Parr, Batten & Brow, Dave Curtis. Also some great up & coming producers such as HilzE, The Tom & Tekneak, who have been making some really good tracks recently.

Describe the Kauz style in 3 words?

Hard but Fair.

What’s your favourite tune of 2008 and why?

Has to be Toluene by DNG, it has the most amazing riff to it, I’ve only ever heard Karim play it though.

What’s your “if all else fails” tune?

It’s a toss up between Batten & Brow - Sloppy Jalloppy or Kauz & Dave Owens – Epic.

If you could play b2b with any dj who would you choose and why?

Oh this is a tough one cause there are loads I'd like to play b2b with ha
ha. Would have to say Paul Glazby because he never fails to deliver the hard stuff. Failing that it would have to be Lionel Vinyl from the Royal Oak pub in my home town of Grantham, the man plays the most blinding chav core and r'n'b flavas you are ever likely to hear. Put a donk on it.

You’ve played on some fantastic tours and home shows with CyberKitten and other fine promotions, what’s been your favourite gig to date?

My favourite gig would have to be Tidy Vs Extreme Euphoria - Lisa Pin Up's God Save The Queen tour, in the Cyberkitten room. Every Dj nailed it that night ther room was rammed from start to finish and a fantastic atmosphere too, really enjoyed it even though I had to play whilst on crutches due to breaking my foot two weeks previous. Ha Ha good times!

So when you are aren’t DJ’ing or going in the studio what do you do with your time?

Apart from the above I do like to participate in some power walking around my neighbourhood but never after 9pm as these are dangerous times we live in. You never can be too careful.

A few quick fire questions:

Coke or Pepsi? Definitely Pepsi, helped me through many a weekender fry up, they are not complete with out one.

The Colonel or the Golden Arches? Gotta go with the Golden Arches.

Winter or Summer clubbing? Summer clubbin' for me.

Vinyl or CD? CD

You are playing at Requiem on the 26th July @ 414…

What are your top 3 Flashpoint and/or Tripoli tunes?

Marc Johnson & James Nardi – Can You Feel It
Marc Johnson & Ben Stevens – Reactiviate
Frank Farrell & Garry Cooke – Etherwave.

Have ever played at the 414 before – what do you have in store for the Requiem massive?

No not played the 414 before, really looking forward too it though. Will have a nice hard driving set for the Requiem massive. Bring it on!

Thanks mate!
