Steve Morley speaks ahead of his Puzzle Project debut!

So Steve, tell us where it all started for you? How did you get into the scene/industry, and where has it taken you since then?

Well it all started back in 1992, when a mate of mine took me to Nighttown, a famous club in Rotterdam. They used to play house (ranging from Acid to Old Skool Rave), I loved it and from that moment on wanted to switch my musical direction from rock and classical (I was classically trained at the Royal School of the Arts in Holland) to dance. I then began buying the equipment to make it. Nice discounts were available as I managed a pro-audio shop in Rotterdam. I first bought a Roland W30 sampler, and an Ensonic Mirage Workstation. A few months later I signed my first track to Basic Beat Recordings ‘Creator’ under my act name Divine Orgasm. This was an instant club hit! I was thrilled!

Many Harder music fans will be aware of your Dave Holmes guise after your seminal releases on Tidy Two. Do you have any plans to bring this harder sound back?

Whilst my main love now as a producer and a DJ is Trance and Psy-Trance, I still like the harder stuff and like to keep my hand in it. For example I’ll soon be releasing a new Dave Holmes single ‘Equal in Love’, in addition to a collaboration with Dean R ‘Getaway’. Both of which will be coming out on my hard label Razor Records.

You have used a plethora of different production guises over the years, is there a reason for this?

To be honest, having produced so many tracks in so many different styles from house, techno, trance, hard dance and gabba, it just made sense to have different artist names.

Is there a production you are most proud of? If so why is this?

I guess that has to be Steve Morley ‘Reincarnations’, as still today I get people telling me how much they love it!

You started your career as DJ Alici. When did you decide to change it to Steve Morley on a permanent basis and why did you do it?

Well under the DJ Alici name I produced and played a range of styles. Steve Morley has always been just about trance which was and still is my first love.

You’ve played all over the world, at some of the biggest events there are. What’s your most memorable gig and why?

Oooh that’s a tough one! I have so many great memories but I guess the one that stand out the most was a live PA I did at Underground Nation of Rotterdam in a huge sports hall in Holland, filled with 10,000 people. The police even asked me to slow the music down as they were having difficulty controlling the frenzied crowd!

You’ve been in this game longer than most. What advice would you give to someone just starting out, from both a DJ perspective and a production perspective?

Don’t bother! Nah, just kidding, but I would say that there is a huge difference between both DJing and producing as a hobby or a career. If you really want to make a career out of it you have to absolutely live and breathe the music, and be able to get over some hard knocks which are unavoidable in such a cut throat business. It is worth it though!

What was the best period for you in terms of music and clubbing, and what do you think the future holds?

One of the best periods for me would have to be the late 90’s. The scene was booming globally back then and there was no shortage of great gigs and good record labels. As for the future, who knows? That’s what makes this scene so exciting!

You used to promote, both at the 414 and the Fridge nearby. Is this something you would consider getting into again?

Definitely! I’ve always enjoyed promoting and am actually working on something at the moment. That’s all I can say for now, watch this space!

Many people consider the 414 to be like a second home. As you are a resident at the club for Sunrise, what will it feel like playing at a regular night party and not an after party? Will you adapt your sound, or will you play similar to what you would at Sunrise?

I always enjoy playing the 414 and will definitely be adjusting my sound for a night event. Night events give you the freedom to be a bit more experimental which is great.

And finally, what can the Puzzle Project regulars expect from you when you make your debut on June 13th?

A full on trance/tech trance set with plenty of exclusive material from our labels. I’m really looking forward to it!

And so are we Steve! See you there!
