This article is about The Magnetix Beach Party @ Club 414 in London (UK), Fri 31 Jul
Rob: Been producing for 5 years, with it starting as a hobby and turning into an obsession and been DJ'ing for just over a year, which really fell together after producing for so long.
2. What was it that gave you that initial push?
Rob: The first big thing to happen for me was being invited to play at the FiNRG afterparty in Finland in 2007, then shortly after that Ajay approached me to be the in-house producer for DiabloTraxx, where I had my first digital releases, "Somewhere", "Dancin" and "Requiem". Then things really started to kick off for me after that.
3. What was the first party you ever played at and how was it?
Rob: The first party was the FiNRG afterparty in 2007, it was in a disused brewery in Lahti in the middle of winter. It was -10 outside but soon started to heat up in there. I was playing an Abelton live PA and on before Jon Doe's live PA. It went really well, the crowd were well up for it and with my tunes pitched up to 160bpm, they fuckin’ loved it!
4. Where do you feel you have played your best set?
Rob: Hands down that had to be the Live PA did for the FiNRG 2008 main event last December in Helsinki. I was headlining with Billy Bunter and on the same line up as Proteus, RX and Carbon Based DJ's. The venue was a bit like the Fridge in Brixton, the clubbers were nuts, the progression of the music throughout the night was perfect and my live PA went really well. Again it was nice and fast for the Finns. But definitely a gig I'll remember for a long time!
5. Out of all the tunes you have, which one ‘never fails?’
Rob: That’s a hard question, of late my tune "Lost In Space" seems to be a crowd pleaser, but Luca Antolini's remix of Above - Stella is a big crowd pleaser also.
Rob: Well, when I was in Finland the first time, we'd met up with Jon Doe and were at the after party venue doing some last minute setting up. I went exploring the many rooms in the venue as found a load of wood, hammer, nails, saw and work bench. So, Jon said "lets build a wooden goat", which he's done before as a goat is in the logo for his CLSM act. We spent about an hour making this thing, which did look pretty cool actually. We then hung it next to the DJ booth with chains, and apparently its still there now! It was definitely a random experience, haha!
7. You’ve made a fair few bootlegs (which I absolutely love!). Which has been the most fun making and why?
Rob: Again that’s another hard question, I do really enjoy making all the booties but I think my favourite has to be the "Pjanoo" bootie. I was making it whilst having a few beers and got really into it, kind of almost dancing to it whilst in my chair making it.
8. You're also making plenty of your own productions, a personal favourite of mine is "Eventual" and recently "Ambition"; how do you think your sound has developed and who's been an influence on this?
Rob: I have so many influences, with Technikal MDA & Spherical being the main ones, as I love their fresh style of UK Hard Trance. Recently though I have been loving the German/Euro sound, from artist such as Luca Antolini, Dave Joy and the stuff that comes out of MMP studios in Switzerland. But I'm influenced by pretty much everything I hear.
9. Who would you most like to make a tune with?
Rob: Love to work with Technikal, MDA & Spherical, Gilbert Renoir, even that lightweight Ben Bennett (haha, he'll know what I mean).
10. You've been the head engineer for DiabloTraxx Digital since the beginning, how's this going and what are in DT's plans for 2009?
Rob: Its all been moving forward nicely, has brought lots of great opportunities and we've reassessed our goals for the rest of the year which we are on target for. Lots more gigs in the pipeline and we'll be opening the doors soon to our studio, a real benchmark of achievement for us was Kevin Energy emailing us and asking to come in a make a tune!
11. As well as all your tune making you're also one third of the DiabloTraxx Live PA, with such great bookings last year like the Bull Dog Bash, Finland and Fantazia NYE 08, where can we expect to see you and the team this summer?
Rob: We’re all out about on individual bookings in the coming months but keep your eyes peeled for some big live PA's towards the end of the summer.
12. Stepping back from DT you're also signed to Hybridize from Finland, how did this come about and where's it taken you?
Rob: Hybridize is a sub-label of FiNRG and I have been working very closely with the guys out there. I have learnt so much from them and it was a real buzz being asked by them to sign some tracks I'd been working on. Hopefully in the future there will be some more international events and more hard trance/freeform releases on the label.
13. So how is the Hard Dance scene in your eyes at the moment?
Rob: I can see a real upturn in the European sounds coming into the UK. The UK scene seems to be a bit stagnant at the moment but it all works in cycles and the the last high point was probably 2002 so its due to come back in a big way soon.
14. If you could play at any event which would it be and why?
Rob: Would have loved to have played at Transmission in Sydney but now it would be Utopia in Sydney. I have seen pictures from the events and it looks amazing!
15. When all the partying is over how do you like to chill out?
Rob: Watching movies and funny stuff like Peep Show and South Park, love Cartman, he's a crack up! Also make a bit of fidget house which is nice to do something a bit different every now and again.
16. And finally, what can the Magnetix massive expect from you at the Magnetix Beach Party?
Rob: I will get up behind the decks and play music… No really, it will probably be a production mix of my recent stuff from the last few months. A mixture of the Euro influenced stuff and the tougher end of the UK sound, but I'm really looking to Magnetix so you won’t be disappointed!
Rob, thank you for your time and we'll see you soon!
