Interview with Maximal Residents The Hustle

We caught up with the ringleader behind The Hustle, John Ryan ahead of Maximal’s ‘We Love Rave’ party at The Aquarium on March 21st to find out a little bit more about the newly crowned residents.

So John, what is the idea behind The Hustle?

The idea behind The Hustle is quite simple really, I always felt that it’s important to have a collective that’s able to grow and to diversify with music, as the scene today moves in so many directions so do your influences so we bring in different producers, musicians and DJ’s into The Hustle all of the time to add something new to the live sets. One week it might be just me performing or the next if could be myself, Sandy M, Darren and Jo all together. This was allows for freshness each and every time.

It's been quite a year for you guys so far...I understand you've recently become Maximal new residents - how's it going and what can we expect from you ?

- It's all good at the moment! We've been building this up over the past year or so and now working with a cracking brand like Maximal we're getting ourselves out there and doing what we love. Expect big things from the Hustle, we're gonna be smashing dancefloors all over the place!

• Who are the Hustle and what are you all about?

- We're basically a group of mates who formed a collective in order to do get ourselves out there and into the clubs on the right side of the decks. We're all about energising clubs and getting dancefloors going - We like to create real party atmospheres and get places jumping. We mix our styles up to keep things fresh and make our sets more then just playing out club bangers over and over. We want people to go away thinking they heard something original and well executed that really got them going.

• It must be fun Djing with a group of mates?

-Definately, it gives us much more energy up there behind the decks when theres a group of mates. I think that the crowd can see we are having fun with it and that translates onto the dancefloor.

• Do you all play back to back? How does it work?

- We like to mix it up - sometimes playing back to back, sometimes 1 of us will do part of a set then someone else takes over. We like to keep it fluid and go with what feels right at the time.

• Who do you draw influence from?

- Well obviously with there being 4 of us theres loads of influences coming in. We've all got slightly different backgrounds which gives us more to play around with. Between us weve got people who were influenced by Breaks, Hard House, Drum & Bass, Trance, Hip Hop, Techno... even Garage!

• What's been the highlight of your careers so far?

- Loads of good stuff has been happening lately but being offered our 1st residency for a big night like Maximal is up there at the moment!

• You’re starting to make a big impact on the London scene?

- Yeah the hard work has finally paid off and we're now getting into the clubs and playing loud music to the people which is all we ever wanted to do.

Where is your favourite place to play and why?

- Obscure locations are what its about for real parties to go off… like the igloo party at Snowbombing - a real igloo 2000m up a mountain!!

• Who do you think is hot right now in DJ world?

- At the moment im loving people like Herve, Filthy Rich, Ed Kane, MSTRKRFT...

Any plans for production?

- We've got plans to hit the studio in April after doing Snowbombing. Theres plenty of ideas floating around that we think are going to go down real good. Hopefully there should be a couple of releases this year.

What have you got coming up over the next few months?

- Its gonna be a fairly busy few months coming up now. We've got the Maximal residency obviously, aswell as bookings for Twisted Disco @ Pacha supporting people like Deadmau5 and Justice. After that we are hitting the studio.

What's your top five tunes this month?

- The Aston Shuffle - For Everyone (Stupid Fresh Remix)
- Feadz 'Numanoid'
- Egor Bass 'Superfreak' (Miles Dyson Remix)
- Andrea Lai 'Gimme Trouble'
- 'People Like People' (Lazer acid remix)

Finally who would be on your dream Dj line up?

- It would have to be.... Herve, 2 many DJ's, Zabiela, oh and why not stick The Prodigy on too ;-)
