Interview with Simon Morell ahead of Maximal 'We Love Rave'

Polish-born and Yorkshire-bred, Simon Morell is both hard-working and tight. He is quickly becoming one of the most talked-about DJs on this page and I once saw him dissect a mouse with only his teeth and a white label of John Lennon’s "working class hero".

Through his residency at DDD, which he co-promotes, Simon has played alongside some of the longest names in the business and it is a testament to both his modesty and his self-belief that though there was usually very little room left for his own billing he neither cried nor asked any of them to shorten their names. Simon’s forte is in being able to perfectly judge the pitch of a night then bend it to his own will taking it to profoundly unexpected and uplifting places and it is this unerring ability which has seen him secure the patronage of the likes of Ralph Lawson, Loco Dice, Alex Under and Andrew Weatherall.

With Simon at the helm as both resident DJ and co-promoter, DDD is fast becoming one of the most credible and innovative breakthrough nights in the UK and it is a measure of its success that this year sees the night go bi-monthly as DDD spreads its love and its wings to a series of as yet undisclosed underground venues.

Hi Simon, thanks for taking the time do this interview. Let’s start at the beginning, how did you get into music and then into dj’ing?

No worries, I got into electronic music by my older sister, she used to pass me old rave tapes, from raves like eclipse, Joy and Shelley’s. I then started a collection of my own before long I was visiting disc records in Bradford and spending every penny I had on vinyl to practice on some shitty belt drives me mate had !

Who did you take inspiration and influence from when you started out and who inspires you today?

I was into the whole Manchester scene roses and Monday’s were big influences in my early teens, when I was buying vinyl everybody from, sneak, doc martin, Paperclip people, timewritter, green velvet, François k, swag, daft punk, Carl craig and Francois K are still big inspirations there old fella’s but still knocking out gems ! which kind of makes me feel better about my age !!

You run your own night DDD that used to be at The Key. What’s the crowd like at DDD and what DJ’s have you had down?

I think we have a big northern contingency at our nights we built the night around friends and they are still coming to this day 5 years down the line, everybody’s really friendly and just up for a proper party. We’ve had loads of people play for us over the years. We try and make are bookings exclusives as possible which is hard work in london, we were the first to book trentemoller in the UK which was a roadblock! Other guests have included loco dice, martin Buttrich, Guido Schneider, Ewan Pearson, HotChip, Ame, Losoul, John Tejada the list goes on !

With it being your own night do you get away with playing stuff you wouldn’t normally play in other clubs?

Yeah I think we do, our crowd tend to trust us , it’s nice to be able to drop it deeper and still hold the floor then crank it right up for the more peak times.

Which artists feature in your DJ sets the most at the moment?

Matthias Kaden stuff is ace! Simon’s (baker) knocking some wicked stuff out at the moment, as is serafin, Jimpster, Johnny D, Solomun, Paulder.
