This article is about Recreation Vs Get FunKT @ Club Life in London (UK), Fri 28 Nov 2008
They may not stutter as much as Scatman John. Nor indeed claim to be the 'holy-est' producers in house music. But they ARE one of the most up-and-coming producers in the scene, at the moment, and with an appearance at Club Life this coming Friday - you'd better get your tongue truly in a twist for the Stuttering Munx....
Where did the name Stuttering Munx come from?
It came from a sound on a synthesiser that we use when producing in Reason. The sound was spelt Monk but, would you believe it, there is a Rock Band with that name already - but we liked the name and the sound SO much we just changed the spelling.
What do you make of the tech/minimal scene at the moment?
I really like some of it, some of it really bores me! I think it is very difficult to categorise music, good music is good music at the end of the day.
How did you get into dance music an what inspired you to produce your first record?
It was while I was working in a nightclub in a French ski resort. I was working behind the bar but used to jump in and cover for the DJ while he 'powdered his nose'.
What's been the proudest moment in your professional life so far?
Hearing the first record I produced being played on the radio by Judge Jules.
Aside of music, what else has been your proudest moment to date?
Finishing my show winning VW 1968 Beetle (Harriet).
What productions/releases have you got coming up?
We have just signed our latest track “Toasted Tubes” to the Groove Junkies new label MOHO 180 and we have just done a remix for the Groove Junkies called “Black Man in the White House” which was released this week exclusively on Traxsource and I'm pleased to say it's steadily climbing up the top 100!! We also have a track due to be released on Beatlejuice Recordings from Tokyo called “Berlin”.
What did you do for your birthday and when was your birthday?
I celebrated it twice, once a couple of weeks before the actual date when I went to Spektrum and Sankey's in Manchester which was off the scale. Then I had a more sedate party at a local restaurant with family & friends.
And how young does that make you?
40 years young! Get in!
What's the weirdest or craziest thing that's ever happened to you in a club?
It actually happened just around the corner from Club Life, in what WAS the Chunnel Club. I had just finished DJing for Come Dancing and a large disco ball fell on my head. Oooouch!!
What's the best night out you've ever had?
Sankeys! I have to say it IS a brilliant club, no messing about with posh frills, just heads down - proper banging!
So, what's your most favourite record of all time?
Very hard to just pick 1 but as I have to I am going to say Gat Décor – 'Passion'.
What's the worst DJing gig you've ever had?
The worst DJ gig ever has to be at a bowling alley in Boreham Wood. There was a total of 6 people there and the only person that danced was at least 80!
What happened the last time you embarrassed yourself?
I farted & followed through, luckily only the wife was in the house, however she took great pleasure in telling everyone!
What can't you live without?
Marmite & the Wife.
Before you were a DJ, what was the worst job you'd ever had?
Working in Millets. It wouldn’t have been that bad but the manager was a right tw*t!
What was the last record you bought?
I pretty much stopped buying vinyl about a year ago. Apart from looking cooler, I couldn’t see any advantages to vinyl over CDs with today’s technology. The last track I bough was a digital download called 4tune500 – Dancing in the Dark (Kamisshake Remix)
Who or what are your musical influences?
Too many to list really, but a few key players are; The Smiths, David Bowie and more recently the likes of Timo Mass, Norman Cook, Switch, Bingo Players and Bart B More.
Is there anything unusual or weird about you that you'd like to share with us?
There’s plenty that's unusual about me, but nothing I am prepared to share with you! (Actually I’m very normal)....
If you had a time machine, where would you go and why?
Studio 54 -I because I HAVE got a time machine!!
What tunes have lodged themselves in your record box/CD wallet and refuse to leave?
Sandy Rivera & Haze – Freak (Bart B More Secured Dub), Jackknife Lee – Making Me Money (Switch Remix), Moby – Raining Again (Steve Angello's Remix) & Switch – A Bit Patchy (Eric Prydz Remix).
Are you looking forward to playing at Club Life?
Of course I'm looking forward to playing at Club Life!! It's great to be playing in London again!
And, finally, what can we expect ahead of your set for Get Funkt on the night?
A bag full of Cornish pasties and a couple of good tunes!!!
