Ahead of Recreations return to Club Life this friday I decided to have an interview with MDA & Spherical to see what their plans are for their set and what we can expect at the event and in 2009.

-Stefan: When it comes to your productions, who makes what in the tracks you produce?

Matt: We are both engineers in our own rights so it's a pretty even spread! We don't have set parts of the track to do each - we are always physically in the studio together so whoever has a good idea for a certain part will just lay it down.

Mark: Then we'll probably have a mouse-fight for about half an hour over the volume of something really stupid.

-Stefan: Describe one of your sets with 5 words of what people can expect of your set at Recreation

Energetic, Uplifting, Party, Hard, Dance!

Stefan: Everyone seems to be getting into production, are there are any tips for upcoming producers?

We would say to stick at it. It takes most people years of making tracks before they get to something that sounds professional. It's all about experimentation and finding something unique that will get people interested in you. Try and think of your own ideas and don't just copy whatever is big at the moment.

-Stefan: In what direction do you think Hard Dance is going?

We think the music will continue to be a dominant force in club land; people will always want to go out and dance to harder music. There is a lot of new influence now with guys like Kutski playing from Tech Trance to Hardstyle in the same set which is great. Diversity is the key!

-Stefan: How it all started for you?

Once upon a time.. only kidding! We met through a friend one day in school years and we realised that both of us had an interest in dance music with the intention to start making it, so we literally met up one weekend and had a bash at making some Hard Dance. We won't lie – it was pretty shocking! But somehow a label decided to sign it and from there MDA & Spherical was born.

-Stefan: What do you think makes Recreation different to all the other events in London?

We've been to a few Recreations and it's safe to say there's always a good crowd making the atmosphere go wild in there. Club Life is great little club too; the 2nd room is just as good at the main room and there's a great indoor/outdoor smoking area where you don't get rained on! There's a good variety on the lineups and you still have the trusted big names to keep the 'Recreation Sound' consistent!

-Stefan: Which club/place would you like to play in 2009?

Playing at Matter would definitely be high up on the list!

-Stefan: You got any releases lined up for the beginning of 2009?

Yeah, we have been really busy in the studio lately. There is a lot of stuff forthcoming on Masif including EPs we have done with Frisky and Steve Hill. We've just got out of the studio with Andy Whitby to create a track called 'Raw Power' that is coming out on AWsum. We've just finished a track with Technikal called 'Turn It Up' which will feature on his album. There is a new remix of Carl Nicholson's 'Outta Here' on Technikal Recordings that we are pretty excited about and we've also just finished a solo original track 'Take it Higher' that will feature a remix from Andy Whitby & Klubfiller. Busy times!

-Stefan: Do you see your style of tunes have changed in the years and what style you think you will be playing in two years time?

Our style has definitely evolved; we are incorporating a lot more influences from different genres in our music now as opposed to say what you could call the classic UK Hard Trance sound that we were known for. We want to continue in this direction and keep mixing in a many different sounds as possible to keep it interesting for both ourselves and people on the dance-floor.

-Stefan: As a DJ duo, isn't it hard to put the sets together and don't you ever fall out over what to play during a set?

Nah, we have quite similar tastes and both understand what the MDA & Spherical style is about. This means we are usually heading in the same direction – although there have been a couple of occasions where we get the handbags out!
