Prohibition vs Reunite the Carnage preview - Kevin Energy interviews Ed Real!!

This article is about Prohibition meets Reunite The Carnage @ Club Life in London (UK), Fri 24 Oct 2008

Teddy lets start with a simple - how are you?...been up to mischief recently?

The last few months of the year are always manic and this year is no different. After a summer in the mud it’s back to the clubs so it’s mischief all over the country as per usual! Great to see some really strong scenes around the UK at the moment in places like the South Coast, Wales, South West so business as usual and the beat goes on.

You have had a really successful year - what do you think has been the single biggest factor in this?

I think we started as we meant to go on with an awesome Hard Dance Awards. The positive impact of the awards definitely put the wind in my sails and it’s been the best year for me in terms of brilliant and unusual gigs. I played in a swimming pool full of 400 lunatics at the Bang Face Weekender and tore up the old zoo in Ibiza with a closing drum and bass set mixing it up with Dizee Rascal and Judge Jules rocking out in the booth next to me. It doesn’t get better than that! Sure, the massive raves like Global Gathering, Def Qon and Dance Valley rocked hard this summer and are career peaks but these mad one-offs make me grin from ear to ear even now writing this!

You have been around for a bloody long time and seen all the rises and falls of various genres of the dance industry.Where do you see the Dance scene going in the next 12 months?

Good question! I’d like to see the scene become less polarised as the hardstyle and hard house now seem to be two different scenes all together which has split things down the middle. I like them both but parts of the country now really support one or the other which is a shame. There’s room for all tough music in a night out but that’s the tribal nature of the underground and history shows us that people tend to follow one or the other when a scene splits like it has now.

How would you describe your musical style these days?

Eclectic and entertaining!

How did you get into music? And what inspired you to produce/remix your first record?

It’s been in the blood from the time I was capable of liking and disliking things! Getting inside music and production is an adventure and new scenes and sounds constantly excite me nearly twenty years down the line. Making tunes is another dimension to this addiction!

What's the weirdest thing that's ever happened to you in a club?

Well I just got back from Burning Man festival in the Nevada Desert USA and that is definitely the craziest event on earth. 40,000 folk in the desert with two rules; no money and no guns! But anything else goes. The Opulent Temple stage where I played alongside Carl Cox and hundreds of other great DJ’s had a dance-floor surrounded by fire. Two big red buttons next to the decks allowed us DJ’s to set off jets of flame all over the outdoor area – on top of the booth, speakers, dance platforms etc. Imagine 2000 people all in fancy dress illuminated in the midnight desert with the roar of fire blocking out sound as the best tune ever kicks it. Incredible and beyond belief!

Well then I think this next question is probably self explanitary - What's the best night out you've ever had?

See above!

Before you were a DJ, what was the worst job you'd ever had?

I’ve been a DJ all my life - sweet!

Who or what are your musical influences?

Public Enemy and Anthrax today. High octane full bore hardcore business!

Track it Down seems to be gowing from strength to strength...how are things looking for TiD?

The powering of the DJ Mag Top 100 poll has really upped the ante for Trackitdown.net and things are motoring; much more great music and 100,000’s of DJ’s from around the world just going mad for it. If you haven’t checked it out then come on over – the tunes are hot right now!

Cheers Ed thanks for that and look forward to you spinning some mighty tunage at Prohibition this coming Friday.
