This article is about Minamal Presents... The Techno Bug! @ Corsica Studios in London (UK), Sat 23 May
We've been very lucky to grab an exclusive interview with Oliver Dahl (Noir) in support of his upcoming gigs in London.
At only 21, Oliver Dahl is having quite an impact on the electronic dance scene the world over. Recent months have seen him garner support from an array of dance music luminaries such as Dubfire, Laurent Garnier, Nic Fanciulli, Gabriel Ananda, Sander Kleinenberg, Martin Eyerer, Audiojack, Oxia, Noir, Sebastien Leger, Koen Groeneveld, Alan Fitzpatrick, Patch Park as well as the likes of Groove Armada, Axwell, Richard Dinsdale, Chris Lake, ATFC and many more. His tracks have featured in some of the worlds most respected clubs, from Ministry of Sound (London) to DC10 (Ibiza). He is also no stranger to the Beatport charts, consistently hitting the top 10 with his releases as well has holding down the top spot in the minimal chart for 2 weeks.
It's not only his work in the studio that's making people sit up and take note. His live sets are a musical extension of his personality, crossing genres through underground house, electronica, techno and everything in between. From his various residencies and gigs across the continent, he has amassed his expansive sound. Delivering earth shattering bass lines, blistering build ups and winding killer hooks, the euphoric rush he creates whips the dance floor into a frenzy and shakes the club to its foundations. With his ability to pick out the perfect tune at the perfect time, bringing the club under his total control, it's easy to see how he can ignite any dance floor he wishes.
Never one to sit back and take the easy route, numerous projects are planned for 2009. Highly anticipated remixes for the likes of James Talk, Noir, Filth & Splendour and more are scheduled for the Spring of 09 as well as the hotly tipped EP under his guise of Harbour Company, which illustrates a more personal side for Dahl, showcasing melodic leads and breaks with the raw, darker elements of techno. Add to this the murmurings of his own imprint launching in the winter and it's easy to see why his reputation as one of the most talented and exciting young breed of producer/dj's continues to flourish.
[Minamal] So Ollie, When did you first get into electronic music and what started it all off?
[Oliver Dahl] I'd say I fell into it through a progression from other forms of music. What got me hooked though was DJ Hell's essential mix on radio 1 back in 2005. I'm the type of person that when I find something interesting I have to find out as much as I can about it, which led to getting more involved in the scene and eventually playing and producing.
[Minamal] How long have you been DJing for and can you remember your first gig?
[Oliver Dahl] I've been playing since 2006 with my first gig coming a couple of weeks after picking up my first set of decks. The gig was in Cardiff and got me a monthly residency.
[Minamal] At what point did you decide to start producing?
[Oliver Dahl] Personally, I feel it's a natural development from playing, to wanting to create and play your own music. Towards the end of 2007 I made my first track, Mode, which happened to go to number 1 on the Beatport minimal chart and number 3 on the main chart.
[Minamal] You've had some tremendous success with some of the labels you've featured on and some of the artist support you've been getting, how did it come to be like this? [Oliver Dahl] Yeah I think I've been really lucky to work with some of the labels and people that I have. People like Noir and his label have really got behind me and my music and done a lot to help me with regards to getting the music to the right people and promoting the stuff in the right way. It's always nice to get good feedback as well from some of the major names like Dubfire, Garnier, Fanciulli, Oxia etc.
[Minamal] Away from the music, what do you find yourself doing in your spare time? Are you a party animal and what places have been your favourite place to just let go and party??
[Oliver Dahl] I'm actually finishing off my degree right now so everything has had to be toned down a bit! I think Space Ibiza has been my favourite so far though. The atmosphere in there was pretty special, I've not seen anything like that since.
[Minamal] What has been your favourite release of yours so far and why?
[Oliver Dahl] I don't think I'd be able to chose one actually. I get a bigger satisfaction from doing more melodic stuff which is what I'm doing at the moment.
[Minamal] So what have you got lined up for us in the future? Anything to expect from Oliver Dahl?
[Oliver Dahl] Yeah there's a whole host of new EP's coming up as well as some remixes and I'm just putting the finishing touches to a remix of Aphex Twin's 'Windowlicker' track which is an old favourite of mine
[Minamal] Thanks for your time Ollie, Looking forward to your set at Minamal Presents... The Techno Bug @ Corsica Studios, Sat 23rd May 09.
[Oliver Dahl] Thanks mate, looking forward to it.
