This article is about ABSTRACT @ Egg in London (UK), Sat 12 May 2007
Christopher Bleckmann and Hannes Wenner aka misc. we hope you are well and looking forward to your next UK appearance with us for White Noise @EGG in London on Saturday 12th May. Here are some questions we have compiled for you ahead of your techno fuelled visit…
When was the last time you played in the UK or London? And what do you think the differences are between German and UK clubbers other than the obvious languages spoken?
We played in Fabric London last year around April, which was great fun. The audience in London consisted of people from everywhere in Europe with some really crazy fans from Italy in the first row! So there isn’t too obvious a difference between clubbers from the UK or Germany. It’s about enjoying oneself in the ways a techno club can offer...
What can our clubbers expect from your live performance on the 12th?
We’ll play a good mixture of new and older studio-material depending on the situation on the night. We usually start out a little mellow to get the people in to the right mood and then we crank up the tempo and the energy like a good DJ would do.
What is your aim and where do you like to take your live sets? Do you just play your hits as you hear them on record or test new stuff, stick to a program or just go for it depending on the crowd?
Our aim definitely would be not to repeat ourselves every time we play. So we mix old and new, released and unreleased material on stage while the set continues. It’s like a permanent remix, a work in progress if you will. We can go wherever we want with our music on stage, we even don’t have to stick to the arrangement one would know from our records. This way it doesn’t get tiring and we can test new stuff from our studio in a live environment.
What is your most memorable live performance as Misc.?
Do you mean good or bad memories? hehe. A good one was in the Oslo-Club in Detroit USA, very enthusiastic crowd, nice place, having played in the city of techno just felt great!
Christopher and Hannes your production work shows that you are quite a unique double act is there ever any conflict in ideas for music, or are you both totally on the same wave length at all times? And how much of an influence do you have on each other?
No, we have to struggle a lot over small things in the production. Could be a sound or effect or part of the arrangement, whatever. That is a challenge on the one side, but good for the music on the other. Contradicting ideas of sound or music really help create something that feels new to us. Of course there is a basic consent what we both want in our music, there are just different ways how to get there...
What is your favorite track you have produced?
Well, yet to come, we’d say. The next track is always the best for us, until another one is finished.
You guys have a number of production aliases such as Misc., Monpahce, Neiderflur, Clubsessl and Van Delta. Which project do you enjoy working on the most?
After dozens of releases under different imprints we ended up with MISC. and NIEDERFLUR as we felt these techno-oriented projects represented our little sound-universe the best. As sonne we had realized this, there was no need any more to try out every music-genre that is out there.
We can imagine that your studio must be well equipped, what have you got in there?
It’s all software, it has been for about 4 years now. CUBASe 4, ableton 6 and some nice plug-ins it’s about it. A lot of free-software coming from the internet nowadays. That amazes us most, people writing software for weeks without monetary interest!
When is the best time for you to make music, first thing in the morning or late at night?
Anytime is good for us!
What inspires you to make your music?
The club-experience itself mostly (among other things). One has to be there to understand how the music physically and socially works. The moments, where the crowd goes boom! To know how to do that in a production, how to manipulate feelings just by sound...
Which artists do you like/listen to outside of the techno/dance music genre? And what artists do you draw inspiration from?
Christopher is a lot into dubstep, sublow or whatchacallit. Feels new, new ideas, fresh producers without any or little interest in making the "big bucks". That’s a great relief for the music that you just can do what you like. To mash it all up, regardless...
You have already remixed the likes of great artists such as Depeche Mode, Domonic Eulberg and Savas Pascalidis. If you had the opportunity to remix anyone you wanted who would you choose?
Björk. Full vocal mix of any song. That’d be great!
Which artists would you like to collaborate with, if any and why?
Some really great vocalist would be a challenge, writing songs... no names mentioned.
How do you honestly feel about the international techno scene and where do you see it going?
There will be an even bigger gap between commercial dance music and the underground scene we belong to. Internationally the underground-scene will grow smaller since it’s a transitional time now we think, from vinyl/ CD to more popular formats like MP3 or wav. Maybe even surround-sound-clubs, where 5.1 DVDs or blu-ray-discs are spinned, who knows? There will be always a techno-scene, but different in many ways from what we know today.
Who do you personally consider to be the most influential heads in techno?
At the moment and for some time now: Richie hawtin and the influence of MINUS on the global minimal-scene. It’s really unbelievable...
What techno tracks do you rate for 2007?
Still waiting for "the one".
Without giving the answer “answering these questions”, what are you guys doing right now?
chillin´! We spend a lot of time traveling and working on new tracks. In Germany surprisingly it’s summer now. So we hang out.
Where do you see Misc in 5 years?
Around and about. Still there...
Last question and this is a personal one from me... 'Unspoilt Monsters' (my personal favorite by the way) stands out to be your most aggressive release. What was the inspiration behind this huge track and have you got anything else like this in the pipeline?
This track is based on the idea, that the first thing that comes into mind, the initial idea, is in most cases the best, flawless if you will. The whole tune works its way towards this monstrous bassline that drops after the long break. And when we started this track, there was this bassline first and anything was build around it. One can not plan on this to happen, sometimes a sound suddenly comes into existence and won’t so away anymore...
