This article is about Hat-Club Summer Shindig @ Egg in London (UK), Sat 01 Aug
You marked 10 years of FLR last year, a pretty big milestone for any record label, by releasing a pretty comprehensive collection of FLR tracks. How hard was it to try and sum up 10 years in such a distilled way? It was really difficult and took many a discussion, but I think we eventually managed to get it nailed with the triple CD box set we settled on. CD 1 contained the finest pick of early releases laying the foundation of the label’s sound, the second was a collection of absolute classics that stuck throughout the journey, finishing off with a third CD of future hits and exclusives, all wrapped up in Jem’s trademark Finger Lickin’ Artwork. And how is the first year in your second decade looking so far? The industry has changed so much recently, maybe this year more than any. In many ways the internet has been the death of traditional record labels. But at the same time has opened doors to new ways of doing things, funny to think we didn’t even have email when we started! We are in the thick of the festivals at the moment. What is the FLR consensus on festival season? Do you find a different demographic of fan coming to festivals that you are playing at than to your club appearances? Yeah definitely. People go to festivals to soak up a whole range of musical genres, so it’s a great chance to introduce potential new fans to the Finger Lickin’ Sound
You played Glade Festival a fortnight ago. Tell us about that? Glade’s a great festival, loads of quality music and it’s just the right size so you always seem to bump into a whole host of familiar faces. We hosted the club tent on Sunday which was an absolute blast! I was a little bit sideways in a pretty blue number, apples on my hat but still played a wicked set, it was a great festival. And Camp Bestival in Lulworth Cove last weekend. From the makers of Bestival this is always going to be a successful recipe. Mainly focussing on the kids, it appeals to all those kids that never grew up too, definitely one of the highlights of the year. Great music, great location and great people. The perfect festival.
Tell us a little bit about the Hat Club gig at Egg this weekend? You’ve got Sioux City Boys Club dropping an 80’s electro-pop set and who, it is said, need to be seen to be believed. Yeah we’ve heard a lot about these guys, looking forward to seeing what the hype is about. And appearances from the who’s who of FLR, including, Drummatic Twins, Slyde and of course, me! Who else is coming with tricks up their sleeves? Peo De Pitte is definitely one you can’t miss. He’s just finished a remix of the next Drumattic Twins single ‘Crazy Love’ which is guaranteed to go OFF! He is emerging as a real talent and there is a big buzz about him too.
And this is the first time Hat Club has been hosted at Egg, are you excited about playing at such a legendary London venue? Yeah, we’ve all played there a number of times and it’s a great venue, so the combination with Hat Club is a very exciting prospect. Funnily enough the day we got invited to do the show I was just thinking I haven’t played Egg for ages, so fate took over.
Deepgroove and Hannah Holland are keeping you in pretty good company on the bill, are you excited to be playing alongside them? Of course! It’s just a shame we’re going to be too busy smashing it in our room to see them. As are Hat Club regulars the BeatThiefs, DJ Roo and the Hat Club Allstars. On paper this looks like a killer line-up? Find a better one and I’ll eat my hat. ;-)
Hat Club clubbers are know for being a pretty up for it crowd. This should all add up to create one pretty special atmosphere, right? And what else can people look forward to from FLR this summer? More dates? Any releases? We’ve still got a whole load of festivals all around the world to look forward to and the release of the ‘Deep Throat E.P’, the third single to be taken from the Drumattic Twins new album ‘Hammer & Tongs’.
