Deepgroove Interview

This article is about Hat-Club Summer Shindig @ Egg in London (UK), Sat 01 Aug

Essential ones first:

How and why did you get into this; what drew you to it?

We met many years ago, Grayson was resident at the seminal Bristol club, Lakota and Lee was a long haired raver. Several years later, we were both DJs hanging out at the very raver friendly 24hr café on Monday morning watching people go to work while we drank beer. We then decided to start our own club, PLAY. We booked X-Press 2 for one of our parties and were so impressed with their 6 decks and efx set-up that we gave it a go, and our Deepgroove 4 Decks:Efx show started there, that was about 8 years ago.

What are your influences; what music were you brought up around?

Lee: Everything from grunge, Nirvana, Ned’s Atomic Dustbin, The Cure, to Run DMC, 80s, Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran, Go West, Aha (woo woo!), rave, Altern8, DJ Sy, Slipmatt, early Sasha tapes, Tony De Vit and going to Trade, and of course, The Chemical Brothers.
Grayson: Heavy metal, then saved by house and techno…

You are lovers of technology I believe – and use loads when DJing - why is that important to you?

We love techno, and enjoy the cutting-edge of the genre. We are always keen to embrace new technologies but also appreciate the fundamental ideas of DJing - to put on a good show and crowd interaction. So basically, any exciting new kit has to be fun to use whilst drinking cider and jumping around.

If you are very much digital DJs what are your thoughts on music piracy?

Music thieves should have their hands cut off, unless they are pretty.

Do you prefer to be in the booth or in the studio?

A bit of both. Being in the studio is very exciting and to finish a record you really love is a magical feeling. But playing that record to a thousand people and them loving it is unbelievable.

Have you played Egg before? What was it like or what are you expecting?

Egg is always fun to play at. They are always making little changes for the good of the club. New lay outs, new light shows, and most of all they sell Magners.

How’s the Deepgroove & Jamie Anderson LIVE show doing?

Really good. We recently played at Fabric and to hear all our tracks on that sound system was really special. We have nearly finished our album for Harthouse, so we have plenty more to play out too.

How did the ‘Turbo’ release come about on Sven’s Cocoon label?

We had put out a few tracks with Alter Ego’s Klang Elektronik label, so we were working hard on forming our big room, rolling techno sound and played a few new ones to the guys at Cocoon and they liked them. Then it was left to Sven to have the final say and that was that.

What’s your highlight of the year so far?

Probably getting signed to Cocoon, but our tracks on Radio Slave’s Rekids and the seminal Harthouse have been amazingly satisfying.

Who's an arsehole (anyone not just musically)? why?

L: A grumpy old man moaned at me for answering my mobile in the gym yesterday and then told me to f**k off about 3 times. I would say he was an arsehole. Generally people that are rude are arseholes, and also the people that owe us money…you know who you are!

Who's a hero? why?

L: My mum and dad. They still put up with all my shit.
G: Lee is my hero (yes, Lee answered this question for him…ha ha)

What couldn't you live without?

L: Duck Won Ton Noodle soup.
G: Pornhub and my I Phone (…and this one.)

What would be your desert island discs?

L: One of my 1980’s mixtapes.
G: Techno.

What's the best thing about the industry?

Not having to wear sensible shoes and get up for 9am Monday morning.

and, of course, what's the worst?

There are quite a few dishonest promoters out there.

What would you be if you weren’t DJs?

Air hostesses.
