Interview with DJ's Paul Jackson & Phil Drummond

This article is about Two Am Presents SoundSystemOne @ Egg in London (UK), Sat 28 Feb

Long time DJ and party pals, Paul Jackson and Phil Drummond fill us in ont he exciting things they've been up to ahead of they're joint appearance this Saturday at mammoth London party, Two AM presents SoundSystemOne with Sick! On the Dancefloor and Kidology at The Egg...

With a DJ & Production career spanning 15 years under his belt Paul is still pushing things forward. Making a name for himself on Darren Emerson’s Underwater label with the classic “The Push” Paul has continued to impress year after year. He has found time along the way to remix Justin Timberlake, Pink, Jamiroquai, Ultra Naté, N’Dea Davenport, Space Cowboy, GusGus, Man Parrish, Richard Dinsdale, & The Japanese Popstars amongst others as well continue to tour the planet, holding down residencies in London (the uber-cool Retox), Paris (The Mix) and Dubai (Deep) and clocking up his 90th country visit.

Hard to belive Phil has seen 17 years as a pro DJ!! He started out with good friend Richie Malone where he learnt his trade playing alongside Richie at the legandry "Vibe@Chans" on a Sunday in the early 90s. The night is credited with giving mr Eric Morrilo his first UK apperence and was frequented by the likes of Sasha! He followed up this success with constant touring of the worlds biggest and best clubs, and all the coolest venues in the UK, and can currently be found DJing most weekends with Paul in the cooler end of London clubs & has residencies with Retox@Sosho & Breakfast@Egg. They are just launching a brand new party under the name "LUNA" that will see the boys hosting parties alongside established brands in London's most cutting edge clubs for 2008.

How has 2009 been for you both so far? Any stand out highlights?

PD:Its been suprising good. I was preparing myself for the worse this year with all this credit crunch business but I have to say im busier then ever. Got some great stuff lined up with Nikki & JC as well as Cream, Booka Shade & Mixmag all in the bag.
Highlight for me so far has been the snow. I even bought a Porsche sledge!!!
PJ:….I only wish I could say he was joking… it’s still in my bloody dining room…

What’s been the record of the year so far for you?

PD:Ive only just found it but Jan Driver “Rat Attack” is doing it for me right now. I also love the Chase & Status “Against All Odds” its got my name all over those beats!
PJ: “Hiccups” by Abyss is great. “Touch My Horn” by Jesse Rose. Derrick Carter’s Dub on Ian Pooley’s “What I Got”. I could go on and on….

Both of you regularly headline at some of the biggest clubs in the world, where do you always find an amazing crowd? Which country do all DJs want to play in?

PD:I like eastern Europe, Russia, Poland etc. The girls & the crowds are amazing. I suppose most guys will say Ibiza., but I just end up in a whole load of trouble over there!
PJ: I Love playing in Russia (and all of the old Soviet Union states) There’s a kind of unruly-ness about it that is fun…. If a little dodgy sometimes he he…

You both hold high profile residencies, how did these come about? What’s been the highlight of these so far?

PD: We’re old bastards now so people seem to think we know what we’re doing cos we’ve been doing this for so long. I put it down to Paul’s talent & my good looks!! My highlights in clubs have nothing to do with me actually behaving or doing my job so im saying nothing!

Who were your major influences when you first became involved in the music industry? How did they affect your career?

PD: For me it was Richie Malone through Xpansions. Did that track & never looked back really.
PJ: Jazzy M was an early influence. I toured with him a lot early on. Simon Dunmore was a big influence too. Darren Emerson as well.

What equipment do you favour using in the studio and why? Any insider tips for aspiring producers?

PD: Im happy with CDJs. It takes plenty of practice & hard work to mix and pull tricks with those and its 100% “Live”. I really don’t agree with all this Ableton stuff. Even mistakes sound ok cos it keeps it in time. I’ve yet to find out where the talent lies in using that stuff. Technology has allowed mediocrity to thrive in clubs.
PJ: I prefer Logic, but whatever works for you is best really. It’s what you do with them that counts. These days more than ever you have to have something about your sound that stands out.

Phil, you play a big part in organizing some amazing London parties, how do you find your role differs when promoting your own events, and what’s the secret to the success of a new party?

PD: For a start, I’m not a promoter. Promoters come to me with an idea and I’ll help program that event with DJs etc. Its been such a success that its progressed into another business of its own. I’m now involved in a huge range of events from university balls with around 7000 people to the coolest little Techno afterparties around. I’m turning down more work then I’m accepting at the min. There’s a misconception that anyone with an email address & telephone is a promoter.

You’ve both had the chance to remix some really influential names in the industry, do you have a free reign while working on these projects or are there restrictions you have to stick to because they’re aren’t primarily your own?

PD: I did Destinys child a while back and I even got my own vocal on it too. Yes people, I can claim to have sung with Beyonce ?
PJ: Usually it’s a free reign. Mostly you just get given an acappella and the rest is up to you. I’ve had people asking “make it sound like ‘The Push’” or something like that but I don’t work like that, I hate repeating myself.

You are playing this month at the upcoming Two AM presents SoundSystemOne at The Egg, the night involves 3 huge London brands and promises to be an amazing event, what do you have lined up for your sets?

PD: Cant believe you’ve asked me what I’ll be lining up…… My mum might read this!!!
PJ: All Killers No Fillers! : )

Do you have any plans for a major collaboration together in the future?

PD: I want Paul’s children
PJ: We do have a few ‘Buns in the Oven”. We’ve got a new project we’re working on together with an EP on the way.
We’re bringing Booka Shade over to do a couple of Luna parties with us in a couple of months too.
