This article is about Mixmag: Night and Day @ Egg in London (UK), Sat 23 May
The name High Contrast needs no introduction anymore; though when a young Lincoln Barrett signed on the dotted line back in 2000 he was a complete unknown. Signed on the strength of his mini-disc demos, the Welsh wonder has smashed his way through the D’n’B scene and to chart success in a blink of an eye.
More recently after reaching Drum & Bass superstardom he has released mix albums for Fabric, Mixmag and seen his White Stripes remix all over Radio 1. Missy Elliot, Blaze, Adele and Eric Prydz have also come knocking for a Contrast remix and the Worlds dance floors have been blown apart by his insane skills behind a pair of decks.
With High Contrast sitting firmly at dance music's top table, 2009 sees him rocking a superclub near you, next stop MIXMAG’s massive 16hour rave-a-thon at Kings Cross club, Egg! Headlining this sure to be legendary Night & Day Party, you can definitely expect the unexpected from one of Drum’n’Bass scene’s key players…
We touched down with Mr. Contrast for Mixmag’s Big Questions… and they aren’t called Big for nothing!
“In response to the offensive nature of some of these questions, which are some of the most grotesque I have seen in an interview, I demand that my answers be printed in full.”
Enjoy, Mixmag ;)
What did you want to be when you grew up?
A comic book artist, a special FX man and then a film-maker. Music was never really on the agenda funnily enough.
What’s the worst club you’ve ever been too?
Why not ask what the best club I’ve ever been to is?
What’s been your worst job?
I wouldn’t want to say for fear of belittling someone who still does the profession.
What are you obsessed with?
Cinema and old books.
And what do you hate right now?
There is no hate in my heart.
How would you introduce yourself to someone who’d never heard of you?
Hello, you must be from Mixmag.
Have you ever been arrested?
Is this really relevant to me or my music?
What’s the best record ever made?
‘Feeling Good’, by Little Junior Parker.
What’s the coolest thing in your house?
My egg chair… very 2001.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever had?
That really the only thing that stops you from doing what you want to do is yourself.
What’s your vice?
I don’t consider anything I do to be immoral, depraved or degrading.
What were you doing at 2pm last Sunday afternoon?
Trying to get out of Brighton after a great gig and getting stuck in traffic caused by rioting protesters. S'alright I supported what they were doing!
What’s your answer to everything?
Answers are only ever partial and subjective, absolute truth evades the human mind.
On a scale of 1-10 how good are you in the sack?
I would expect this kind of moronic prurience from Zoo or Nuts.
What’s your prized possession that you’ve still got from when you were a kid?
My Lawrence Tierney autograph.
Have you ever had a homosexual experience?
Again is this really relevant to me or my music? Is this really what readers want to know? I find your leering tabloid tone offensive.
What do you spend your money on?
Talking about money is vulgar and dull.
What was your last big treat?
A more interesting question would be what was the last thing you denied yourself.
What’s your drug of choice?
People who take drugs are boring. This is a fact.
What would you change about yourself if you could?
My mortality.
What’s the worst item of clothing you’ve ever worn?
A powder blue, velour tracksuit. Might also be the greatest?
If you had a Tardis, what time would you go back to?
As much as I’d like to prove that the notion of Jesus being white and blonde is ridiculous, I'd probably play it safe and go to the sixties and hang out.
What’s your lamest claim to fame?
Shakin’ Stevens killed my Mums gold fish. Actually that sounds pretty interesting!
You’re playing at our party on May 23rd at the Egg, so what do you have in-store?
A baroque floor-show featuring the Max Fischer Players. FIND OUT MORE ABOUT HIGH CONTRAST AT: myspace.com BUY TICKETS FOR THIS MASSIVE EVENT NOW AT: ticketweb.co.uk
