Interview: Nathan Fake

This article is about Musiq Concrete @ FIRE Club in London (UK), Sat 28 Nov 2009

Nathan Fake has made some of the most avant-guard electronica of recent times, and is set to mix it with influences old and new at Musiq Concrete at Lightbox on November 28th. Originally from from Norfolk, he has released numerous singles as well as a full-length album on labels such as Border Community and Traum Schallplatten....

Your debut ‘Sea of Love’ was well received and even voted 2nd best album of the year by Mixmag – does that put a lot of pressure on you? Makes the ‘difficult second album’ even harder, no?

It’s really cool that it was well received, but I tend not to think about what people expect from me, i think that can be pretty counterproductive. Also I never read magazines like Mixmag; it really means absolutely nothing to me what they think of my music.

You say you’re influenced by people and that human contact influences you more than listening to music... Any people in particular?

I probably said that in an interview at some point but i say a lot of things in interviews that don't make sense.

Wouldn’t you be better in a band making music if it’s people you bounce off?

No, I work best alone.

Do you think music (or the debates surrounding it) can be over-intellectualised or is it good that people analyse and look for meaning in music?

Music can definitely be over intellectualised, by listeners and artists alike. I guess with music that is largely instrumental, it's difficult or impossible to know what the music is "about" so it's cool whatever people take from it. It is a bit weird sometimes having people tell you what your music is about though.

What have been your greatest challenges this year?

Getting used to living in London, trying to keep writing better music, etc.

What has really pissed you of in 2009?

Nothing really in particular - various things and people..

And what has made you really happy?

Working on interesting/exciting music projects, travelling to some new places, making some new friends.

And what can people expect from you at Musiq Concrete?

I’ll play a bit of new stuff, a bit of old..... Hopefully rock out.

Fake is well up there in my top 5 dj's / producers. Even though he's still pretty young really he's drips of talent and experience a guy twice his age could only dream of.
