Knowwhere @ Heaven in London (UK)

1. You’re now appearing in the Fundamental room at Knowwhere on August 3rd. What can we expect from your set?
Something quite different I expect. Obviously I’ll get down early and get a feel for the room and then go from there. I’ll bring a bit of everything from House, Tribal, Breaks and a bit of Electro and see where we end up. Now where did I put my Gabba?
2. Now you used to play hard house what made you switch to playing house, techno and breaks?
Lykkelove said it best, “Hard House is like puberty, a weird awkward stage that everyone gets over eventually”. Truth be told, I just fell out with it and got bored with the monotony of it all, it lost its fun and funky House roots. I found that everyone was playing the same tunes and it didn’t allow me to be very individual or creative. House, Techno and Breaks have so many sub genres to chose from which allows you to become much more of an individual and creative with what you mix.
3. Can you tell me about any other side projects you have on the go?
I’ve just started producing in the last few weeks but haven’t got anything to show for it just yet, just a few ideas and samples so far, expect something really different from me though. I’m also working with someone on producing Ultra Violet Holograms which if work will be amazing. There are a few different techniques: 3D, Animation and Flip pictures. We’re very close to getting it right but I can’t say any more than that for now as we will be the first in the world to complete this process. I’ve had a lot of interest in this so expect to see some in a club, bar or store window soon
4. Obviously you have an eclectic taste in music – who are your influences and favourites within the scene?
I really don’t have any firm favourites but the DJs’ or performers that really stand out and influence me are the ones that try something different, something that makes them stand out from the rest. I love individuality & creativity in a person, it makes them so much more interesting and you never know what to expect. My main musical influences are people like James Brown, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and The Doors etc.
5. Are you still a vinyl lover or have you switched over to CDJs? What do you think of this change in technology and attitudes?
I still prefer the tactility of vinyl; it’s not something I’ll ever give up completely. A lot of DJs' are selling all their vinyl and decks at the moment; I think they will really regret it in the long run, I'm keeping all of mine - including the Hard House. CDs’/MP3s’ give you more access to music from all over the world, stuff you just wouldn’t find in your local record store. Still, there is still a lot of music you can’t buy on MP3 or CD as these producers are still loyal to ‘the vinyl’.
6. What have been your favourite promotions/nights out and why?
Again, it comes down to creativity and individuality. A night that is going to stand out as something special is one that takes a club as a blank canvas and turns it into an attack on all the senses. I hate it when all a promoter does is stick a few banners up with the name of the night on it. They have the same old DJs’ playing the same old crap. B.O.R.I.N.G! I love promotors like Logic, they really make an effort and put a lot into their production. I haven’t been to a party that has really impressed me for a long time. London clubland needs a serious kick up the arse if you ask me.
7. What has been your favourite gig and also your most challenging?
Most challenging was Twisted at the Fridge. I had no monitors for the first half of the set, 4 needle changes and the left deck was speeding up and slowing down of it’s own accord. I was totally gutted! My favourite gigs so far have been in the 414, I love the place. One that really stood out was my set for Zoology-Techno; I really enjoyed that set and got a fantastic reception from the crowd. I was gutted to have missed out on going to play in Finland with Matt Dahl and gang for NYE but I already had commitments over here. I’m really looking forward to playing for Knowwhere and Peach this year, it’s been a while since I played at Heaven.
8. Can we expect any surprises at Fundamental from you?
It wouldn’t be a surprise if I told you now would it! Wait and see, I may just get naked, especially if Adam White has anything to do with it, always expect the unexpected, my weapon is the element of surprise, surprise and fear… my two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency....
9. We've noticed that you've cut the long hair (at last), can you tell us why and how this has affected you?
The main reason was due to redundancy at my previous job, I needed to go to interviews and didn’t think anyone would want to hire some old hippy I get an extra 10 mins or so in bed in the morning now as it doesn’t take so long to dry, more time in bed is a worthwhile bonus.
10. If you could have a super hero power what would it be and why?
It would be a toss up between X-ray vision, invisibility (for the obvious perving opportunities) or teleportation so the trips back from gigging didn’t take so long.
11. What do you do when not clubbing?
I’m really enjoying the garden at the moment (don’t laugh), having an outdoor space is so rare in the centre of London so I spend as much time out there as possible. It’s a shame I haven’t been out on my BMX as much as I’d have liked to this summer, the weather has been awful and I broke my rib kickboxing. We’ve also just got two kittens, which are keeping us very busy indeed.
12.Which piece of technology would you say has had the most affect on your life?
Personal Computers. I’m really looking forward to seeing what they’ll be able to do in about 25 years or so. Terminator here we come My 6 jet power shower is pretty cool too
