INSEKT 7.9.07: Postman’s sack full to bursting!
The postman’s sack at INSEKT’s 3rd birthday party was so full of heavyweight goodies it much have been well over the legal maximum of 13k! This was beyond the call of duty from the boys! A new venue, and after an absence of several months, this was one to get very excited about. The icing on the party cake of top DJs in the genre was a highly exclusive back to back between two of the most highly-rated and cutting edge in the business, of which more in a sec…

The night started off however by harking back to the roots of hard house, with a super-sexy trade type-set from Superfish legend DFQ. This was hip grinding music at its finest – musical sex! Old school hard house but by no means those ‘classics’ you’ve heard so many times they’ve been ruined for you by now… Pity those fashionably late London clubbers who always turn up later and miss the warm up sets!!

Then there were the back-to-backs. Each of these it seemed to me was marked by the quite different styles of each of the DJs. Chris Comben’s style is one of carefully structured and complex compositions, as in his own ‘Wombat’ I mean ‘Combat’. Tom Parr is a hard nut of the future, and his style is thick, relentless, solid and hard. One day he’ll be further up the bill at an INSEKT night, I guess…

When everyone’s favourite producer Dom Sweeten (aka Defective Audio etc etc.) came on b2b with the punters’ consistently favourite DJ Justin Bourne, the crowd surged forward and the excitement increased. Again this was a contrast of styles, despite their mutual influence over the years – Justin Mr reliable, and Dom so far at the cutting edge he’s almost experimental. It was all new music, as far as I could make out, and not even ‘Dom de Vit’ got an airing!

The final back to back was different in that Nik Denton (Toolbox supremo) and INSEKT’s James Nardi played about three tracks each in turn, which I felt make the set flow better. James is always quality of course and with a distinctive dark but often melodic sound. It was the first time I’d seen Nik and I though he was just superb. He and Paul King (please buy his new album, btw!) just know how to play that super sexy hypnotic hard house to absolute perfection. ‘Fantastic’ (Nik Denton rmx) was just that! Quality quality quality.

As interesting as the b2bs were, it was time now for some proper one-DJ sets, which, for this listener, usually have more flow. So next up was mighty Marc Johnson, surely the most dynamic man in the scene (as well as being a right sweetie). This was a slightly different set than I’ve seen him play recently – perhaps because he wasn’t at the end of the night this time. But I also detected as well the Flashpoint big hitters, some tracks that seem well suited for the Tripoli label that Marc is now running. This meant a groovier, housier set than normal, though of course there was plenty of room for nails too – such as ‘Blunt force’. Some of the highlights for me were ‘Four to the floor’ (Marc rmx), ‘Escapology’ (love that one!), two unreleased tracks by Dave ‘Repton’ Curtis, Marc’s as yet unreleased collaboration with Nick Sentience (which sounded awesome on the great Heaven sound system), and finally Adam M’s remix of TDV’s ‘Are you all ready’. Best set of the night so far, IMO.

This last track led perfectly into Karim, who really hammered it out all the way, even with his characteristic old school and disco samples! It was the hardest and fastest I’ve seen him for a while, and I just couldn’t keep off that podium (except to get an ice cream at one stage!) That distinctive Karim sound just raised the tempo of the night to another level. Super tracks all the way through, but my favourites being ‘Dreams’ (blended perfectly with Marc’s last track), ‘Dance with me’ (so sexy!), ‘Kick it’ (not the Glaz one. Someone played this earlier too.), ‘Music power’, ‘Rampage’ and the one we’d all been waiting for ‘I feel love’. ORGASMIC! Super super set. Best along with Marc’s, or even just edging it.

Finally finally, the Dark Destroyer. Any rumours of Glaz going soft were utterly discredited if you saw his back to back with the King Farley at the vile Wildchild recently. Nails all the way. This wasn’t quite as fast and hard (until an insanely fast encore, which I still managed to dance to.) Unusually I managed to recognize many of the tracks in Glaz’s set this time – several of the new Tinrib ones on VC (e.g. ‘Something heavier’), ‘Catabolic’, Ben Stevens’s ‘Squeeze’…. (BTW for those of you who are dying to know, Glaz bench presses c. 100k for about three reps… ;o) Look forward to seeing you in Brighton, Dark Destroyer!

INSEKT is without question the best night out. The promoters are top quality music makers themselves, who aim to put on a good quality night without hype bullshit and cynicism. This actually is quite refreshing in today’s clubbing climate. Their attitude is professional, they hire the best hard house acts in the business, present cutting edge underground and make a show of it with video screens, super lasers, and a lovely new venue (which serves food), They attracts a nice crowd of friendly music lovers without idiots to spoil it for you. I was a little surprised that so many regulars were missing from this special night, though. I’d love to know what was on that was so much better than this!!! As for me, I brought along five INSEKT virgins and they all loved it - as I knew they would!

See you at the next one, crazy clubbers!!!
