After attending the Big Chill Festival (consisting of 4 days and nights, going for it big style) even my hardened recovery period was pushed to it?s (almost) limits. So much so I was still convinced at 5:30pm on Friday I was to do the unthinkable and actually have a weekend off from the party scene!!?. You?ll be happy to know that by 5:40pm I had heard news of a DnB and dubstep night @ Herbal called Feline, and had already put that silly little idea of having a quiet one well and truly out of mind!

Getting down nice and early at around 10:30pm I got to see once again how quickly Herbal can fill up on a Friday night. The added lure of ?ladies in free before 11? certainly worked, as upstairs room 2 turned more and more into a Carlsberg advertisement. Large groups of good looking junglettes all taking advantage and filling the dance floor up early? madness to go anywhere else for now. As not only the room was hotting up, but the tune selection had been spot on since arriving.

Dubstep for those of you who have not had the chance to hear, is a music genre with an ever growing popularity. Its early roots are based in experimental garage with an emphasis from London?s grime scene in the late 90?s / early naughties influencing early form. The rhythms are usually syncopated, often shuffled or incorporating triplets. Through progression of the genre many more influences have been drafted in to dub and current producers are really exploring where they can go with this. Dub can now really bring to life old skool jungle and garage tunes with new fidgity broken beats, and also at the same time create an innovating platform for new tracks, where producers can draw on varied influences old and new. This genre really brings something exciting to the table, and for old jungle admirers like myself takes you back, way back.. but in a new and very impressive format.
Really good times to be had for this fast growing genre in the future for sure!

From growing up in the Birmingham drum and bass scene in the late 90?s, and it being one of the only types of music I would listen to for a few years (pretty much fell in love with it) I was keen to see how the DnB would go down in Herbal?s cracking main room?
Very well indeed, would be the answer!
Stepping in at just the right moment (the party vibe seeming to follow us down the stairs 10mins later) the ever expanding main room collective were brought up to speed by some low driving bass lines and crisp syncopated beats.. just how I like it! No room for over complicated breaks and up front, in your face, almost rushed DnB which in my opinion has polluted the genre over the past 4 or 5 years. Tight mixes throughout and some real quality tune selection created the perfect party atmosphere skillfully led by mistress of the ceremony MC Chickaboo.
Another reason I was enjoying this so much was because unlike some DnB events on larger scales (and some smaller scales too), which tend to attract a crowd who get off on aggression and causing hassle ? damn fools! This was ?just like the old days? with a mix of older and younger clubbers, enjoying drum and bass as it supposed to be enjoyed; with a smile on their face as well as a nod in their bop!

I really do recommend checking Feline?s next outing, be rest assured door. will let you know all about it once the details come out!

Two thumbs up for Feline and yet another great Friday bash at Herbal!
