This article is about LOVE MUZIK MEETS UNDERGROUND TV @ Hidden in London (UK), Sat 05 Aug 2006
Love Muzik is the unprejudiced party that has been rocking London's Hidden club for a few months now, with an eclectic musical policy drawing in crowds across the board. Will Paterson (from Frantic) and Billy "Daniel" Bunter (from Tasty) gave us the lowdown on their exciting joint venture.
Billy “Daniel” Bunter” – The Party
You’ve recently been quoted as saying that you feel Hard Dance is more versatile and exciting than ever before. Why do you feel this?
It’s on fuckin’ fire at the moment! The crowd’s fresh and radical, the DJs are forward thinking and exciting, and events like Tasty, Frantic, Nu Religion, Bounce 2 this, GoodGreef et all are steering the scene in innovative new directions all over the country. The last Tasty proved a point when it comes to variation in the music, and the energy and enthusiasm from the crowd was inspiring. We answered all of Hard Dance’s critics that night! For too long we have had boring DJs, playing boring music, whilst looking as bored as they sound whilst playing. There’s a new generation of DJs and producers who are at the forefront, and they have got the energy the dance floors want. Kutski, Whitby, Kid, Gage are on fire, up and comings like Double Trouble, Andy Mcall, Janie Mac, Mark H, Phil York, HyperVixen and Digital Kid are coming through and they are fresh, what people want, and I’m very excited, proud and honoured to be part of such a vibrant scene.
Then you have the experience of Kevin Energy, Cally & Juice, Jon Doe, Mark EG, my self. It’s a new age and I’m 110% dedicated to making this new era heard. We all have a scene to be proud of, and we all have a scene we should be shouting about at the top of our voices – The belief starts here!
Who on the Love Muzik line-up exemplifies your beliefs?
All of them - they have all been hand picked for there energy and dedication, and it doesn’t end with the DJs on that line up, we have more fresh talent on the next Tasty, we have more fresh talent on the Love Muzik after this one. We will keep pushing fresh talent, we will keep pushing the experienced DJs who want to do it for the love of forward thinking hard underground music. All the DJs on the next Love Muzik have the vibe and the vision to push the scene in the direction it deserves and to be creating sheer energy and excitement out on the dancefloor.
How were the first three “episodes” of Love Muzik? Do you think people acknowledged that you were trying to do something a little bit different with the event?
It was a challenge, and within 3 events we put Love Muzik on the map, fresh line ups, fresh music, diversity, and packed out club with open minded up for it party people. The Summer season is nearly over, plus we have moved to a Saturday. We smashed it before the summer, and I’m excited about August 5th. I always put 110% in to any thing I am involved with and Love Muzik is no exception, and I really believe people know that when a Tasty or a Love Muzik comes around they are in for an unbeatable atmosphere and are looked after when it come to quality, to many promoters cut corners and people know that’s some thing we don’t do.
Do you think dance music has become less segregated in the last couple of years? The Hard Dance crowds certainly seem a lot more open to suggestion at least...
There’s always been segregation, even back in the late 80s. What we have to do as the Hard Dance scene is make sure we embrace all the genres, tech trance, hard style, techno, hard house, hard trance, psy, hardcore, freefrom, trance, classics, filth, bounce. There is so much stuff our events can cover and if programmed properly with the right DJs then there is no stopping us. Too many scenes are one-dimensional, and hard dance doesn’t have to go down that route. We are strong at the moment, and we have tons of variety to keep moving on with.
On the production side of things, do you feel that it is dangerous that it has becoming increasingly difficult for producers to make money from their tracks?
It’s always been hard for people to make money out of music. Now is no different. Producers who are dedicated will find a way. No one ever said it’s gonna be easy. We have all had to fight to make our music heard, and to pay the bills from our passion. The challenge will only make our producers and DJs stronger and more determined, and when you have strength and determination only good things will follow. You always have to have something to fight for, that’s how strong musical genres are born, and as hard dance moves in to new musical direction those producers and DJs who believe will reap the benefits and be at the forefront of the new era.
Will Paterson – The Venue
Will, which parties have really taken the roof off Hidden over the summer?
The Summer has been outstanding! Freeformation in June was at capacity by 11:45pm! It then proceeded to rock Vauxhall to its foundations with a diverse but totally underground music policy of Hardcore/ Hard House/ Hard Trance/ DnB/ Old Skool and House!
Torture Garden in July was simply brilliant. Every one of their punters came to party and boy did it go off! The 2nd Birthday for Hot&Spicy was a revelation! Set across all 3 rooms this was the ultimate House Soundtrack with a rocking crowd!
NuReligion was simply unmissable. With Hard House clubbers travelling from all over England and Wales this was a must see event for any lovers of music above 130bpm!
Have there been any improvements made to the club recently or are there any in the pipeline?
We have made 2 big improvements in the last month:
1) We have totally transformed the Outdoor Terrace with a wicked Space style canopy! We have added a Thai BBQ and even our very own Balearic soundtrack! This really needs to be experienced to be believed!
2) We have added loads more sound to the Red Room. All 3 rooms are now pumping out Arena quality sound! Hidden prides itself on allowing the promoter and the clubbers to hear the music at studio quality!
Are you pleased with the way things have gone in your first 9 months in charge of Hidden? Where would you like to see the club develop from here?
It’s been a challenging 9 months. I’ve learned some hard lessons, but it’s been an inspiring journey! I’m keen to give the best established and new promoters a chance to really develop and use this great space to its max! It looks like its fast becoming a very popular venue for Hard House, Hardcore, Trance, House, DnB, Fetish and Gay events. This diversity is exciting, but always keeps the management on its toes!
New venues come and go regularly in London, with at least a few failing to do the business every year. Why do you think it is that so many new venues fail?
It’s certainly challenging running a venue and once things start to go wrong the problems can quickly escalate. I think that and the inexperience of a lot of new venue owners can prove disastrous. I’m very lucky to be in partnership with Lee, who has been a venue manager for 20 years at the Hippodrome, Ministry, Koko and now the Scala.
For you, what is the most impressive club venue in the world, and why?
I love a whole range of venues, but ultimately Koko will always be my favourite. I don’t think anything can ever beat that first journey down the tunnel into the 2000 cap main room. I’ve run nearly 90 events there and it’s still as special, still as thrilling to open the doors and watch the clubbers flood into this peerless space!
