Eryk Orpheus Interview

Eryk, can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your music background?

I got involved in music at the age of 15 years when I broke my leg playing rugby. I taught myself how to play guitar whilst in hospital which led to me join a band with some friends at school playing lead guitar. We were soon playing the London circuit. Through this I developed an interest in programming sequencers as I was using them to write the drum and bass parts of songs for the band. It was not long before I started listening to electronic music and on joining a music tech course in 1997. I met a group of guys and started to write electronic music. With them I played a lot of filthy squat parties in London as well as club nights such as Escape from Samasara, Techtonic and Trancentral. Through this Orpheus 2 was formed and after a release wth Recover Records and a wealth of major gigs over a couple of years I decided it was time to go solo, which I did in March 2004.

What have you been up to since we last saw at the battle of the PA’s which I believe you won?

At the moment I am on a flight to Finland to play for the Barbed Wire Apocalypse Tour alongside Carbon Based, DJ RX and Reform for FINrg Records and I’m also going to be spending time in the studio with Carbon Based and RX while I am out here. Other than that I have been busy in the studio writing with (Jon) Sharky, (Pete) K Complex, Mark Ashley, the infamous Gordy and Dj Tolous. I’ve also been writing new material for release and for the live P.A. and I’ve also been remixing for various people as well as Djing for nights such as Tasty and Hardcore Heaven.

You’re a bit of a whiz when it comes to music production with some interesting bootlegs to your name, have you got anything of that nature lined up for your next 2 sets for Total Mayhem?

I’m sure that there will a couple of cheeky bootlegs working their way into my upcoming sets but that’s all I’m saying for now.

With the 2007 fast approaching have you got anything planned that you want to tell us about?

I will be mixing 600% Nu energy which is due for release in early 2007. Also a number of gigs lined up for Frantic and Hardcore Heaven. For other dates keep your eyes peeled in the ‘bookings section’ of my website www.erykorpheus.co.uk

And lastly we have got a few questions from the Total Mayhem army.

What do you think is missing from today's club nights? – CanaDark-DSI

When I first started gigging every night would have a chill-out room and this really made the whole clubbing experience a lot more sociable. It was also nice to be able to get away from the loud music for a few minutes and then get back on it. I think this is why a lot of places seem to empty by about 4 or 5 these days as people are knackered and just want to go and chill-out at home or round a mate’s. Clubs were definitely busier until closing a few years ago and people were also more up for going to after parties too.

Do you think that Hard House, Hard Trance, Freeform sets should be longer, like the old 2-3hour sets that used to be the norm? – Tjukurpa-boy

Personally I used to love watching longer sets as Djs had more time to get into their stride and really build their sets. Nowadays everyone has to reach for their best crowd-pleasers and just bosh them out so sets don’t get chance to take people on a journey. I also find that you will often hear the same tune 4 or 5 times in the same room which can be a little bit tedious, so bring back longer sets I say!

Do you think Freeform should settle for just having a large second room at events, or more of there own events and artists taking to the main stage? - cnvrted-vegtrian-SCA

I definitely think that the popularity of freeform is growing as people are getting tired of the more mainstream hardcore and there are a growing number of producers and Djs promoting the freeform sound. I’d love there to be more main-room freeform events although until it starts becoming more popular it’ll still be relegated to the second room I’m afraid.

What conditioner do you use - Rob77-PT

I have a special formula of exotic oils, herbs and spices made up for me by a Dalai Lama in the mountains of Nepal which I apply every night before I retire. Tee Hee, no I just bang on some boots own Tea tree and mint shampoo when the locks get really stinky!

How was your engagement party? - the118girl-SCA

Bloody wicked cheers honey apart from the sound system “allegedly” broke down on the M25 (although I find that very dubious, and Stef won’t give me their name so I can tell other people not to book them ), however my lovely fiancé did manage to sort one out at short notice and the party was rocking by midnight thanks to Mr Burns. I had a couple of beers and some rather special cake to so I was happy giggling away to myself. You should have been there!
